        Impact of Flight Departure Delay on Airline Choice Behavior

        <P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P> <P>The Korean aviation industry (KAI) has been expanded significantly, because the Incheon International Airport opened in 2001 and low cost carriers (LCC) entered the KAI market. But following the KAI's growth, flight departure delays (FDDs) have increased six-fold during the past decade. In terms of these situations, this study firstly adds the FDD variable to an airline choice behavior (ACB) model and secondly analyses how FDD impact the ACB. As a result, FDD is relatively less influential on ACB than other attributes. Both the flight service and available schedule are positively related to the choice of full service carriers (FSC). The analysis shows that FSCs’ allotment rate (AR) is 85.3%, while LCCs’ one is 14.7%.</P>

        Global Carriers’ Governance and Business Scope

        Recent structural changes to the shipping industry triggered severe liquidity risks for not only small and medium-sized shipping lines but also global lines. Despite a severe downturn in the industry, a few lines have shown stable performance their finances. This study thus raises two research questions. Why do a few shipping lines maintain stable financial performance (FP)? How much does the governance feature (GVF) and the business scope (BSC) influence FP? To answer these questions, this research uses regression analysis (RA) to verify the relationships among the variables, GVF, BSC, and FP. The result of the RA showed a positive relationship between BSC and FP, but slight relationship between BSC and GVF and between knowledge and FP.

        Optimal Korea’s Government Organization of Shipping and Shipbuilding

        This study aims to explore the optimal model for the Korean government’s organization (KGO) of the maritime industry using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The result of the AHP analysis revealed that most respondents of the survey firstly weighted realistic possibility (0.473), and goal orientation (0.316) and institutional stability (0.221) were secondly and thirdly evaluated. The sub-criteria were systematically classified as suitability (0.279), competency (0.139), reliability (0.125), efficiency (0.115), political coordination (0.098), feasibility (0.095), equity (0.076), independence (0.044), and cooperation (0.041). Finally, shipbuilding and offshore plants under the unification with the Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries should be considered as the optimal KGO of the maritime industry in terms of the evaluation of AHP alternatives.
