In this study, using a combination of bioactive glass (BAG), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), a novel nanofi ber network was fabricated through the electrospinning method. The biocompatible BAG/CMC/β-CD nanofi bers (NF) were optimized for the controlled release of fl utamide, a hydrophobic anticancer drug, which was immobilized on the surface of nanofi bers through chemical conjugation. The synthesized nanofi bers were characterized by various analytical techniques, including X-ray diff raction analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specifi c surface area, fi eld emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and UV–Vis Spectroscopy. The drug loading and in vitro drug release studies at a pH of 7.4 investigated the high loading effi ciency at 99.65% and the release without an initial burst of a high dosage of the drug in a few hours. The drug release achieved 100% within 12 h, following a sustained release pattern due to the slow degradation of the matrix. The fi ndings suggest that BAG/CMC/β-CD NF could be a promising candidate for the fl utamide drug delivery system due to overcoming the challenges of its poor bioavailability and low aqueous solubility.
Surface modification of silica-graphene nanohybrid as a novel stabilizer for oil-water emulsion

The surface modification of silica-graphene nanohybrid through treatment with a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acid vapors to prepare a novel stabilizer for decalin-water emulsion was investigated. The nanohybrid was prepared through chemical vapor deposition using silica aerogel and acetylene as catalyst and carbon precursor at atmospheric pressure and 600 oC. The physicochemical properties of the modified nanohybrid were characterized by FT-IR, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM. The surface modification of nanohybrid was at various duration times (24, 48, and 72 hours) to optimize the surface modification conditions. Zeta potential of −39.9 mV revealed that the surface modification of nanohybrid after 72 hours had an excellent stability in aqueous phase due to the presence of exceptional functional groups. The emulsion average droplet size decreased by increasing the nanohybrid concentration. The negative value of the zeta potential showed the proposed nanohybrid can be applied as an appropriate stabilizer for emulsion.

In this paper we report an electrochemical sensor based on ZnO-functionalized graphene oxide nanocomposite (ZnO-GO) for the sensitive determination of the cabergoline. Cabergoline electrochemical behaviors were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CHA) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The modified electrode shows electrocatalytic activity toward cabergoline oxidation in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) (pH 7.0) with a reduction of the overpotential of about 180 mV and an increase in peak current. The DPV data showed that the obtained anodic peak currents were linearly dependent on the cabergoline concentrations in the range of $1.0-200.0{\mu}M$, with the detection limit of $0.45{\mu}M$. The prepared electrode was successfully applied for the determination of cabergoline in real samples.

The present study aimed at extending shelf life of rainbow trout fillet. Fish and seafoods are the most valuable nutrients, however, high levels of moisture, free amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, and the content of nutrients make them to be categorized as spoilable and unstable foods. The objective of this research was to study of the shelf life of rainbow trout fillets using Salvia officinalis L. extract. Chemical and microbial analyses were performed on treatments. The usage of hydro-ethanol extract of S. officinalis L. significantly decreased microbial growth in fish fillet and there were significant differences among concentrations of the extract (p ≤ 0.05). The presence of extract of S. officinalis L. resulted in an inhibitory effect on the formation of TVB-N and FFA in comparison with the control group at all analytical times. In conclusion, the shelf life of fish fillets was increased noticeably using extract at 4 ± 1 °C.

While evidence exists for an association between the dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC), mortality, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases, data about DTAC and renal function, and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are scarce. This study aimed to determine the associations between DTAC, renal function, and progression of CKD in older adults. The present cross-sectional study consisted of 226 older adults aged ≥ 60 years old from five districts of Tehran, Iran. DTAC was estimated using the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) method. Dietary intake, socio-demographic data, medical history, and anthropometric measurements were collected using a validated questionnaire. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was assessed from serum creatinine. Albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) was calculated by dividing albumin concentration by creatinine concentration and reported as mg/g. The DTAC ranged from 112.8 to 2,553.9. Analyses indicated that DTAC was not associated with eGFR (p = 0.35) and ACR (p = 0.91) even after controlling for confounding variables. Additionally, in logistic regression, no association between eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (p = 0.32) and ACR ≥ 30 mg/g (p = 0.32) with DTAC was observed, which was independent of confounding variables. We observed that more compliance with DTAC is not associated with renal function and CKD progression. Further studies are needed to confirm the findings of the present study in larger samples on different populations.

A novel carbon paste electrode modified with $Cu-TiO_2$ nanocomposite, 2-(ferrocenylethynyl)fluoren-9-one (2FF) and ionic liquid (IL) (2FF/$Cu-TiO_2$/IL/CPE) was fabricated and employed to study the electrocatalytic oxidation of droxidopa, using cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CHA) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) as diagnostic techniques. It has been found that the oxidation of droxidopa at the surface of modified electrode occurs at a potential of about 295 mV less positive than that of an unmodified CPE. DPV exhibits a linear dynamic range from $5.0{\times}10^{-8}$ to $4.0{\times}10^{-4}M$ and a detection limit of 30.0 nM for droxidopa. Finally this modified electrode was used for simultaneous determination of droxidopa and tryptophan. Also the 2FF/$Cu-TiO_2$/IL/CPE shows excellent ability to determination of droxidopa and tryptophan in real samples.

Purpose: Improving physicians’ critical thinking abilities could have meaningful impacts on various aspects of routine medical practice, such as choosing treatment plans, making an accurate diagnosis, and reducing medical errors. The present study aimed to measure the effects of a curriculum integrating critical thinking on medical students’ skills at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran. Methods: A 1-group pre-test, post-test quasi-experimental design was used to assess medical students’ critical thinking abilities as they progressed from the first week of medical school to middle of the third year of the undergraduate medical curriculum. Fifty-six participants completed the California Critical Thinking Skills Test twice from 2016 to 2019. Results: Medical students were asked to complete the California Critical Thinking Skills Test the week before their first educational session. The post-test was conducted 6 weeks after the 2 and half-year program. Out of 91 medical students with a mean age of 20±2.8 years who initially participated in the study, 56 completed both the pre- and post-tests. The response rate of this study was 61.5%. The analysis subscale showed the largest change. Significant changes were found in the analysis (P=0.03), evaluation (P=0.04), and inductive reasoning (P<0.0001) subscales, but not in the inference (P=0.28), and deductive reasoning (P=0.42) subscales. There was no significant difference according to gender (P=0.77). Conclusion: The findings of this study show that a critical thinking program had a substantial effect on medical students’ analysis, inductive reasoning, and evaluation skills, but negligible effects on their inference and deductive reasoning scores.
