Evaluation of the Protective Efficacy of Asteracantha longifolia on Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Damage in Rats

        T. Devaki,V. Ravikumar,K.S. Shivashangari 한국식품영양과학회 2004 Journal of medicinal food Vol.7 No.2

The effect of oral administration of methanolic extract of Asteracantha longifolia (AL) seeds on acetaminophen (APAP)-induced acute liver damage in rats was investigated. The activities of marker enzymes (aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, and gamma glutamyl transferase) and bilirubin level in serum and the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and free fatty acids in both serum and liver were found to be increased when rats were challenged with APAP. This was also associated with a significant reduction of serum and tissue phospholipids. Pretreatment with AL extract prior to the administration of APAP prevented these alterations as evidenced by liver histopathology. Results indicated that the extract could offer protection against APAP-induced liver damage, suggesting its hepatoprotective activity.

Antihepatotoxic Nature of Ulva reticulata (Chlorophyceae) on Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatoxicity in Experimental Rats

        T. Devaki,A. Sathivel,H. Balaji Raghavendra Rao 한국식품영양과학회 2004 Journal of medicinal food Vol.7 No.4

Ulva reticulata,a marine edible green alga, is a known source of proteins, vitamins, and sulfated polysaccha-rides. Though there are many reports in the literature regarding the composition and antiviral property of Ulva sp., studies ofthe antihepatotoxic property of green seaweeds in animal model are scarce. We have studied the antihepatotoxic nature of thismarine green edible alga, U. reticulata, in a hot water extract (150 mg/kg of body weight for a period of 15 days) against ac-etaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in experimental albino rats. The acetaminophen-induced rats showed significant eleva-tion in levels of the serum marker enzymes aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase and of lipid peroxides in livertissue with decreased levels of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. The levels of reduced glu-tathione and vitamins (E and C) were also decreased in the liver tissue of acetaminophen-intoxicated rats. The oral pretreat-ment with a hot water extract of U. reticulatareduced the hepatotoxicity triggered by acetaminophen considerably by im-proving the antioxidant status in experimental animals with depleted levels of lipid peroxides. These results indicate that theoral pretreatment with a hot water extract of U. reticulatain rats is effective in reducing the hepatic oxidative stress via freeradical scavenging properties, suggesting an antihepatotoxic activity.

Ameliorating Effect of Capsaicin on Alterations in Lipid Metabolism during Mice Lung Carcinoma

        P. Anandakumar,S. Jagan,S. Kamaraj,G. Ramakrishnan,J. Binu Clara,D. Pathitha,T. Kavitha,T. Devaki 대한약학회 2009 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.32 No.2

Spices and vegetables possess antioxidant activity that can be applied for preservation of lipids and lower lipid peroxidation in biological systems. In the present study, we have investigated the effect of capsaicin on lipid metabolism during benzo(a)pyrene induced lung cancer in Swiss albino mice. Benzo(a)pyrene (50 mg/kg wt) induced lung cancer animals showed abnormal changes in the tissue and serum lipids, lipoproteins and lipid metabolizing enzymes. Treatment with capsaicin (10 mg/kg body wt) remarkably attenuated all the above alterations and restored normalcy. These findings reveal the chemomodulatory potential of capsaicin in attenuating the alterations in lipid metabolism during experimental lung carcinogenesis.
