      • Microstructural Characterization of $CaTiO_3-NdAlO_3$-Based Ceramics

        Suvorov, Danilo,Drazic, Goran,Valant, Matjaz,Jancar, Bostjan Korea Crystallographic Association 2000 韓國結晶學會誌 Vol.11 No.4

Ceramics based on CaTiO₃-NdAlO₃ solid solutions were synthesized in order to study their dielectric microwave properties. Microstructural analysis was performed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) using different analytical methods such as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS). It was observed that the heating conditions during sintering and cooling strongly affect the microstructural development of CaTiO₃-NdAlO₃-based ceramics. Various types and concentrations of structural defects were identified, for example, dislocations, twins and/or antiphase boundaries. all such defects resulted in a degradation of the dielectric microwave properties, in particular the quality factor Q. Dielectric properties of CaTiO₃-NdAlO₃-based ceramics can be improved by an appropriate thermal treatment of ceramics which results in a decrease in the concentrations of the identified microstructural defects.

      • Microstructure vs. Dielectric Property Correlation in the Stoichiometric Sillenites

Valant, Matjaz,Suvorov, Danilo Korea Crystallographic Association 2000 韓國結晶學會誌 Vol.11 No.4

Bi/sub 12/SiO/sub 20/, Bi/sub 12/GeO/sub 20/ and Bi/sub 12/O/sub 20/ compounds with the sillenite crystal structure were synthesized and sintered into the dense ceramic bodies. An analyses of the microwave dielectric properties of the Si, Ge and Ti sillenites showed a permittivity (e) of ∼40 and a negative temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency for all analogues (from -20 to -40 ppm/K). The Qxf value of the Si and Ge sillenites was measured to be ∼8.000 GHz. The Ti analogue shows a significantly lower Qxf value(∼2.500 GHz) and is sensitive to the heat-treatment conditions. By increasing the sintering temperature the size of the grains increases, which correlates with an increase in the Qxf value.

Microstructural Development of Cobalt Ferrite Ceramics and Its Influence on Magnetic Properties

        Gi-Yeop Kim,전재호,김명호,Danilo Suvorov,최시영 대한금속·재료학회 2013 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.19 No.6

The microstructural evolution and its influence on magnetic properties in cobalt ferrite were investigated. The cobalt ferrite powders were prepared via a solid-state reaction route and then sintered at 1200 °C for 1, 2, and 16 h in air. The microstructures from sintered samples represented a bimodal distribution of grain size, which is associated with abnormal grain growth behavior. And thus, with increasing sintering time, the number and size of abnormal grains accordingly increased but the matrix grains were frozen with stagnant grain growth. In the sample sintered for 16 h, all of the matrix grains were consumed and the abnormal grains consequently impinged on each other. With the appearance of abnormal grains, the magnetic coercivity significantly decreased from 586.3 Oe (1 h sintered sample) to 168.3 Oe (16 h sintered sample). This is due to the magnetization in abnormal grains being easily flipped. In order to achieve high magnetic coercivity of cobalt ferrite, it is thus imperative to fabricate the fine and homogeneous microstructure.

pH control of magnetic properties in precipitation-hydrothermal-derived CoFe2O4

        Jovanovic, S.,Spreitzer, M.,Otonicar, M.,Jeon, J.H.,Suvorov, D. Elsevier Sequoia 2014 JOURNAL OF ALLOYS AND COMPOUNDS Vol.589 No.-

Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CFO NPs) were synthesized using precipitation followed by a hydrothermal treatment. The conditions for precipitation were kept constant, while the pH, the temperature and the synthesis time for the hydrothermal treatment were systematically varied. The results show that the pH plays the dominant role in the formation, growth and crystallization of the desired phase. Furthermore, by controlling the pH the magnetic properties, such as the magnetization and the coercivity of the CFO NPs, can be tuned. An increase in the temperature induced both particle growth and a change of the morphology. The variation of the synthesis time indicated that the hydrothermal reaction proceeds for up to 8h; however, a further prolongation of the synthesis time does not affect the structural and magnetic properties to any significant extent.

Direct Observation of Cationic Ordering in Double Perovskite Sr2FeReO6 Crystals

        Choi, Si-Young,Lim, Jong Bong,Ikuhara, Yuichi,Suvorov, Danilo,Jeon, Jae-Ho Cambridge University Press 2013 Microscopy and Microanalysis Vol.19 No.5

<B>Abstract</B><P>Two kinds of Sr2FeReO6 (SFRO) samples, pristine SFRO and Re-excess SFRO, were prepared and we visualized the local atomic structure in terms of cationic ordering in the prepared SFRO samples via high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). HAADF-STEM results demonstrated the high degree of cationic ordering maintains in both the pristine SFRO and Re-excess SFRO samples. On the other hand, defective structures such as antiphase boundary and Re-deficient phase were observed dominantly in the pristine SFRO, and thus the poor magnetic property in the pristine SFRO is attributed to those defective structures related with the frustrated Fe/Re ordering.</P>

      • Hydrolytic and phosphorolytic metabolism of cellobiose by the marine aerobic bacterium Saccharophagus degradans 2-40T.

Zhang, Haitao,Moon, Young Hwan,Watson, Brian J,Suvorov, Maxim,Santos, Elizabeth,Sinnott, Corinn A,Hutcheson, Steven W Published by Stockton Press on behalf of the Socie 2011 Journal of industrial microbiology & biotechnology Vol.38 No.8

<P>Saccharophagus degradans 2-40 is a marine gamma proteobacterium that can produce polyhydroxyalkanoates from lignocellulosic biomass using a complex cellulolytic system. This bacterium has been annotated to express three surface-associated 관-glucosidases (Bgl3C, Ced3A, and Ced3B), two cytoplasmic 관-glucosidases (Bgl1A and Bgl1B), and unusual for an aerobic bacterium, two cytoplasmic cellobiose/cellodextrin phosphorylases (Cep94A and Cep94B). Expression of the genes for each of the above enzymes was induced when cells were transferred into a medium containing Avicel as the major carbon source except for Bgl1B. Both hydrolytic and phosphorolytic degradation of cellobiose by crude cell lysates obtained from cellulose-grown cells were demonstrated and all of these activities were cell-associated. With the exception of Cep94B, each purified enzyme exhibited their annotated activity upon cloning and expression in E. coli. The five 관-glucosidases hydrolyzed a variety of glucose derivatives containing 관-1, (2, 4, or 6) linkages but did not act on any 관-linked glucose derivatives. All but one 관-glucosidases exhibited transglycosylation activity consistent with the formation of an enzyme-substrate intermediate. The biochemistry and expression of these cellobiases indicate that external hydrolysis by surface-associated 관-glucosidases coupled with internal hydrolysis and phosphorolysis are all involved in the metabolism of cellobiose by this bacterium.</P>
