Fresh and chopped aerial parts of Oryza sativa were extracted in 80% aqueous mehthanol, and the concentrated extract was successively partitioned using n-hexane, ethyl acetate (EtOAc), nbutanol, and H2O. From the EtOAc fraction, a new flavonolignan (2) and a known flavonolignan, salcolin B (1), were isolated through repeated SiO2 and octadecyl silica gel column chromatography. Based on NMR, mass spectrometer, and IR spectroscopic data, the chemical structure of compound (2) was determined to be tricin-4`-O-[erythro-β-guaiacyl-(7``-O-methyl)- glyceryl] ether, which has thus far never been reported and was named salcolin C (2). Salcolin B (1) and salcolin C (2) dose-dependently inhibited nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells with IC50 values of 29.8±0.6 and 10.8±1.0 μM, respectively, without visible toxic effect.
Four Flaps Technique for Neoumbilicoplasty

The absence or disfigurement of the umbilicus is both cosmetically and psychologically distressing to patients. The goal of aesthetically pleasing umbilical reconstruction is to create a neoumbilicus with sufficient depth and good morphology, with natural-looking superior hooding and minimal scarring. Although many reports have presented techniques for creating new and attractive umbilici, we developed a technique that we term the "four flaps technique" for creating a neoumbilicus in circumstances such as the congenital absence of the umbilicus or the lack of remaining umbilical tissue following the excision of a hypertrophic or scarred umbilicus. This method uses the neighboring tissue by simply elevating four flaps and can yield sufficient depth and an aesthetically pleasing shape with appropriate superior hooding.

<P>Fatty acid-induced cytotoxicity is believed to recapitulate lipotoxicity seen in obese type-2 diabetes, and, thus, contribute to beta cell loss in the disease. These studies were initiated to determine whether the Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling pathway was involved in palmitate-induced beta cell death. Treatment of INS-1 beta cells with palmitate enhanced interaction between TLR and myeloid differentiation factor88 (MyD88). Concomitant with TLR/MyD88 interaction, the level of phospho-C-Jun N-terminal kinase (phospho-JNK) showed an increase; however, the level of inhibitory factor kappa B alpha (IκBα) showed a decrease. Gene knockdown of TLR4 prevented palmitate-induced INS-1 cell death, while knockdown of TLR2 did not. In addition, gene knockdown of TLR4 prevented palmitate-induced increase of phospho-JNK and decrease of IκBα. JNK inhibitor SP60125 significantly protected against palmitate-induced INS-1 cell death, while IκB kinase (IKK) inhibitor acetylsalicylate did not. These data suggest involvement of JNK activation through the TLR4 signaling pathway in palmitate-induced INS-1 beta cell death.</P>
A New Record of Cymatium encausticum (Ranellidae: Tonnoidea: Gastropoda) from Korea

The Cymatium Roding, 1798 is a small- to large-sized marine gastropod genus. Three species has been reported thus far for Cymatium in the Korean waters. In general, Cymatium encausticum (Reeve, 1844) is known to occur in tropical seawaters including the Philippine Islands along with its congeners C. gutturnium, C. springsteeni, and C. exile. A single individual of the species was collected from Jejudo Island by SCUBA diving and morphological features were observed using a stereomicroscope. This is the first study to report the occurrence of Cymatium encausticum (Reeve, 1844) from the Korean waters, providing a detailed description of the species with the illustration for the shell morphology.

Background Glomus tumors were first described by Wood in 1812 as painful subcutaneous tubercles. It is an uncommon benign neoplasm involving the glomus body, an apparatus that involves in thermoregulation of cutaneous microvasculature. Glomus tumor constitutes 1%-5% of all hand tumors. It usually occurs at the subungual region and more commonly in aged women. Its classical clinical triad consists of pain, tenderness and temperature intolerance, especially cold sensitivity. This study reviews 15 cases of glomus tumor which were analyzed according to its anatomic location, surgical approach and histologic findings. Methods Fifteen patients with subungual glomus tumors of the hand operated on between January 2006 and March 2013, were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were evaluated preoperatively with standard physical examination including ice cube test and Love's test. Diagnostic imaging consisted of ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. All procedures were performed with tourniquet control under local anesthesia. Eleven patients underwent excision using the transungual approach, 3 patients using the volar approach and 1 patient using the lateral subperiosteal approach. Results Total of 15 cases were reviewed. 11 tumors were located in the nail bed, 3 in the volar pulp and 1 in the radial aspect of the finger tip. After complete excision, patients remained asymptomatic in the immediate postoperative period. In the long term follow up, patients exhibited excellent cosmetic results with no recurrence. Conclusions Accurate diagnosis should be made by physical, radiologic and pathologic examinations. Preoperative localization and complete extirpation is essential in preventing recurrence and subsequent nail deformity.

Cloning of the gene encoding extracellular .betha.-lactamase from Streptomyces sp. SMF13 in a plasmid pIJ702 and expression of the gene in Streptomyces invidans were carried out. Optimal conditions for the formation of protoplasts of S.lividans and the regeneration of the protoplasts were evaluated. Streptomyces sp. SMF-13 was selected as a donor strain of .betha.-lactamase gene and totla DNA of the strain was partially digested with Sau3A I. DNA fragments ranged from 4kb to 10 kb were ligated to pIJ702 AT Bgl II site and then the ligated DNAs were transformed to the protoplasts of S, livivans. The transformation efficiency was $2 *10^{3}$ .$\mu$g DNA for the ligated DNA mixture. One colony among a thousand colonies regenerated showed extracellular .betha.-lactamase and the size of the inserted DNA fragment was estimated to be 3.94 kb. The .betha.-lactamase activity in the culture broth of the recombinant strain was maximum at 3 days culture to be 1.0 unit/ml.
