      • Strategic Foreign Direct Investment and Exchange Rate Uncertainty

        We investigate how exchange rate uncertainty affects the foreign direct investment decision of a multinational firm (MNF). Previous studies have emphasized the role of risk aversion in determining the response of the firm to exchange rate uncertainty. We study a risk neutral MNF that produces under decreasing average costs in each plant. We show that, in a deterministic setting, the firm would open only one plant. We demonstrate that, with sufficient exchange rate volatility, the firm can increase expected profits by opening several plants. We also show that if the MNF faces a competitor in the foreign market, the exchange risk, by inducing the MNF to open plants in both markets, may drive the local competitor out of business.

      • Effects of Foreign Production Externality on the Optimal Policy of Home Country

        본 논문은 외국기업의 생산과정에서 발생되는 환경오염이 국내 조세 또는 보조금에 고나한 최적정책에 미치는 영향을 분석한 것으로 마쿠젠의 두 재화-두 국가 쌍방 생산의 부성모형을 이용하였다. 외국기업이 국내에서 어떤 재화를 생산하는 과정에서 발생할 수 있는 환경오염은 시장실패를 야기시키고 이는 시장의 효율성을 감소시키기 때문에 해당 국가의 부를 감소시키게 된다. 이미 발생한 환경오염으로 인한 시장실패는 환경오염이 없는 상태를 효율성 극대화를 서위하기 어렵기 때문에 극대화된 효율성에 근접할 수 있는 차선의 정책을 모색해야 할 것이다. 이러한 경우에 환경오염을 억제 또는 보상하기 위한 차선의 정책으로 국가는 환경오염 외국기업에 대한 세금과 또는 환경오염으로 피해를 보는 당사자에 대한 보조금을 지급하는 정책으로 어느 정도 보상될 수 있다. 또는 시장실패가 없다면 자유무역은 세계경제의 효율성을 극대화시킬 수 있으나 어떤 형태든 시장실패가 존재하면 자유무역은 더 이상 효율성을 극대화 시킬 수 있는 시장구조라 살 수 없다. 또 이러한 환경오염에 대응하는 세금부과 등의 정책은 지나치면 효율성을 감소시키는 무역장벽의 역할을 할 수 있기 때문에 최적정책을 찾는 것은 효율성을 극대화에 접근하기 위한 중요한 절차라 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서의 분석결과, 해당 재화의 국내시장이 독점시장이면 외국기업에 의한 환경오염은 국내 최적정책에 직접 영향을 미치게 되나 독점시장이 아니면 어떤 영향도 미치지 않는다.

      • Estimation of Freight Trip Generation Rates based on Commodity Flow Survey in Korea

        In Korea, almost 700 industrial parks are under operation. Generally, industrial parks consist of national industrial parks and local industrial parks which are managed by a central government and by local governments respectively. The developing countries such as Korea, China and Vietnam etc. have constructed many industrial parks, which result in the change of land use pattern and also affect future trip demands. Therefore, in estimating traffic demands, it is very important to consider the industrial park development. This study aims to improve the methodology in estimating a freight trip generation rate with the data based on a nationwide commodity freight survey. The result showed that it is desirable to apply freight trip generation rate by the industry sector in estimating freight trip generations and using the production area of firm as an indicator. Specially, the reliability of the rates through a survey could be made sure because a sample rate based on firms in industrial parks was over 25% and the response rate was over 67%. The sample rate and response rate are very superior as compared to surveys conducted in many other countries. Because industrial parks have significant effects on forecasting transportation demand in pre-feasibility studies of transport and logistics projects, it is expected that the accuracy of freight trip demands would be improved through the results of this study.
