        An Adaptive Face Recognition System Based on a Novel Incremental Kernel Nonparametric Discriminant Analysis

        This paper introduces an adaptive face recognition method based on a Novel Incremental Kernel Nonparametric Discriminant Analysis (IKNDA) that is able to learn through time. More precisely, the IKNDA has the advantage of incrementally reducing data dimension, in a discriminative manner, as new samples are added asynchronously. Thus, it handles dynamic and large data in a better way. In order to perform face recognition effectively, we combine the Gabor features and the ordinal measures to extract the facial features that are coded across local parts, as visual primitives. The variegated ordinal measures are extraught from Gabor filtering responses. Then, the histogram of these primitives, across a variety of facial zones, is intermingled to procure a feature vector. This latter’s dimension is slimmed down using PCA. Finally, the latter is treated as a facial vector input for the advanced IKNDA. A comparative evaluation of the IKNDA is performed for face recognition, besides, for other classification endeavors, in a decontextualized evaluation schemes. In such a scheme, we compare the IKNDA model to some relevant state-of-the-art incremental and batch discriminant models. Experimental results show that the IKNDA outperforms these discriminant models and is better tool to improve face recognition performance.

        Novel Methods of Necroptosis Inhibition for Spinal Cord Injury Using Translational Research to Limit Secondary Injury and Enhance Endogenous Repair and Regeneration

        Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) pose an immense challenge from a clinical perspective as current treatments and interventions have been found to provide marginal improvements in clinical outcome (with varying degrees of success) particularly in areas of motor and autonomic function. In this review, the pathogenesis of SCI will be described, particularly as it relates to the necroptotic pathway which has been implicated in limiting recovery of SCI via its roles in neuronal cell death, glial scarring, inflammation, and axonal demyelination and degeneration. Major mediators of the necroptotic pathway including receptor-interacting protein kinase 1, receptor-interacting protein kinase 3, and mixed-lineage kinase domain-like will be described in detail regarding their role in facilitating necroptosis. Additionally, due to the rapid accumulation of reactive oxygen species and inflammatory markers, the onset of necroptosis can begin within hours following SCI, thus developing therapeutics that readily cross the blood-brain barrier and inhibit necroptosis during these critical periods of inflammation are imperative in preventing irreversible damage. As such, current therapeutic interventions regarding SCI and targeting of the necroptotic pathway will be explored as will discussion of potential future therapeutics that show promise in minimizing long-term or permanent damage to the spinal cord following severe injury.

        Implications of 3-Dimensional Printed Spinal Implants on the Outcomes in Spine Surgery

        Three-dimensional printing (3DP) applications possess substantial versatility within surgical applications, such as complex reconstructive surgeries and for the use of surgical resection guides. The capability of constructing an implant from a series of radiographic images to provide personalized anatomical fit is what makes 3D printed implants most appealing to surgeons. Our objective is to describe the process of integration of 3DP implants into the operating room for spinal surgery, summarize the outcomes of using 3DP implants in spinal surgery, and discuss the limitations and safety concerns during pre-operative consideration. 3DP allows for customized, light weight, and geometrically complex functional implants in spinal surgery in cases of decompression, tumor, and fusion. However, there are limitations such as the cost of the technology which is prohibitive to many hospitals. The novelty of this approach implies that the quantity of longitudinal studies is limited and our understanding of how the human body responds long term to these implants is still unclear. Although it has given surgeons the ability to improve outcomes, surgical strategies, and patient recovery, there is a need for prospective studies to follow the safety and efficacy of the usage of 3D printed implants in spine surgery.

        Working at system level is attracting increasing interest, as it supports the exploration of several alternatives, before the hardwarelsoftware partitioning takes place. New issues must be taken into account, such as validation and verification at alt steps. This paper presents a system-level design methodology that supports verification. Starting from a description in a verification-oriented version of VHDL, art efficient BDD-based tool for Process Algebras is used to perform equivalence proofs.

        Traumatic Spinal Injury Associated with All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Accidents: A 10-Year Retrospective Analysis of the Coachella Valley

        Objective: The use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and associated injuries have significantly increased in the last decade. This study aimed to determine the frequency of ATV-associated spinal cord injuries (SCIs) in the Coachella Valley, California, and provide recommendations for data reproducibility in other areas with a similarly substantial level of ATV usage and injuries. Methods: This retrospective analysis included data obtained through screening the trauma database of a level II trauma center for ATV-related injuries between January 1, 2010 and January 1, 2020. Results: Our data suggest that more than one-third of patients admitted to the trauma center over a 10-year period suffered from spinal injury. Injuries to the spine were further categorized as including the spinal cord (radiographically or clinically) or only including the bony or ligamentous elements of the spine. Injury was more common in men and predominantly located in the thoracic spine. Injuries such as epidural hematoma, vertebral artery, and cord contusion were common, with many patients requiring neurosurgical intervention. Conclusion: Highlighting the implicit dangers of ATV accidents on the spine could help identify outcomes and variables predictive of spinal injuries and spinal cord injuries necessary for patient management. Additionally, our study sets the framework by which legislating bodies could replicate the study for proper legislation and recommendations that may help prevent such injuries.
