The mealybug Phenacoccus gossypiphilous (Stanley) played havoc with the cotton crop in Pakistan during 2005. To control this pest, insecticides of different groups were evaluated in both the laboratory and in field conditions. In the laboratory, bifenthrin, profenofos and chlorpyrifos proved to be the best insecticides for mealybug control, based on their susceptibility with the leaf dip method for their LC50. In field conditions, the recommended application rates of methomyl, profenofos and chlorpyrifos provided the best control: the lethal time studies proved their efficiency for better and timely control of this sporadic pest. The present study has shown that the insecticides tested, in particular profenofos, chlorpyrifos, methomyl and bifenthrin, provide satisfactory control of the cotton mealybug. The control of the insect pest complex throughout the cotton crop predominantly depends on wise and justified use of these chemicals, and necessitates development of an integrated pest management strategy.
Fidelity of Hymenoptera and Diptera pollinators in onion (Allium cepa L.) pollination

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is protandrous in nature and requires cross-pollination to avoid inbreeding. The pollination potential of native bees (Hymenoptera) and true flies (Diptera) was assessed in the perspective of finding the best pollinators for onion cross-pollination and seed multiplication. The community of pollinators was composed of four bee species and twelve true fly species. Episyrphus balteatus, Eupeodes sp.,Musca domestica and Eristalinus aeneus were the most abundant pollinators. The maximum pollinator activity was observed from 12 to 24 days after opening of the flowers. The pollination effectiveness of tested bees (Apis dorsata and Apis florea) was greater than true flies (E. balteatus, Eupeodes sp., M. domestica, E. aeneus and Callihoridae sp.) in terms of Spears values.

Hypocryphalus mangiferae Stebbing is one of the most destructive insect pests of mango trees and is found to be associated with the transmission of causal organisms of mango sudden death disease. The present study was carried out to evaluate the toxicity of deltamethrin, bifenthrin, chlorpyrifos, emamectin benzoate, imidacloprid and spinosad in laboratory and field trials. Bioassay results showed that the toxicity of chlorpyrifos was significantly higher than deltamethrin but similar to bifenthrin. Deltamethrin and bifenthrin toxicity, however, increased significantly (P < 0.01) from day 1 to day 3. Spinosad was the least toxic compound while emamectin was the most toxic among new chemical insecticides tested, but its toxicity increased significantly from day 1 to day 5. Comparison of the efficacies of the insecticides using lethal times to produce 50% mortality (LT50) and 90% mortality (LT90) showed that the relative potencies of chlorpyrifos, emamectin, imidacloprid and spinosad were greater than bifenthrin and deltamethrin. The results of field trials showed the highest number of beetles emerged from the control twigs while significantly fewer beetles emerged from the twigs treated with bifenthrin (P < 0.05), which accounted for 12% for bifenthrin compared to that of the control. The present study demonstrated increased toxicities of systemic insecticides and chlorpyrifos compared to toxicities of deltamethrin and bifenthrin, suggesting these insecticides could be an alternative tool in a comprehensive H. mangiferae management program to eradicate the beetles from mango orchards.
Associativity-Based On-Demand Multi-Path Routing In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

This paper is primarily concerned with multi-path routing in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). We propose a novel associativity-based on-demand source routing protocol for MANETs that attempts to establish relatively stable path(s) between the source and the destination. We introduce a new notion for gauging the temporal and spatial stability of nodes, and hence the paths interconnecting them. The proposed protocol is compared with other unipath (DSDV and AODV) and multi-path (AOMDV) routing protocols. We investigate the performance in terms of throughput, normalized routing overhead, packet delivery ratio etc. All on-demand protocols show good performance in mobile environments with less traffic overhead compared to proactive approaches, but they are prone to longer end-to-end delays due to route discovery and maintenance.

The accelerated growth of the internet and the enormous amount of data availability has become the primary reason for machine learning applications for data analysis and, more specifically, pattern recognition and decision making. In this paper, we focused on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter and collected the comments in order to apply neural networks to classify the projects based on the sentiments of backers. The power of customer reviews and sentiment analysis has motivated us to apply this technique in crowdfunding to find timely indications and identify suspicious activities and mitigate the risk of money loss.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>BACKGROUND</B></P><P>The release of untreated textile effluent to the environment and its subsequent application to cropland poses a serious threat to human health. Various bacterial species contained in the effluent can degrade azo dyes; however, no work has been done to elucidate the role of these bacteria for plant growth promotion (PGP). This study was designed to isolate and evaluate bacterial strains carrying dual traits for azo dye degradation and PGP.</P><P><B>RESULTS</B></P><P>About 468 bacterial isolates were collected from textile effluent, sludge and dye‐contaminated soil through enrichment in mineral salt medium (MSM) containing reactive black‐5 dye (100 mg L<SUP>‐1</SUP>). Seven isolates (I‐15, S‐10, 7.3, 11.4, AE‐5, AE‐7 and AE‐8) with promising potential to treat the dye (100% color removal in 12–24 h) also exhibited significant production of indole acetic acid (9–21 μg mL<SUP>‐1</SUP>) and halo ring formation (diameter 6–11 mm), which is indicative of phosphate solubilization (P‐solubilization). Inoculation of the isolates to maize (<I>Zea mays</I>) plants grown in water and MSM containing the dye resulted in decolorization of the dye while significantly improving plant biomass compared with the control plants.</P><P><B>CONCLUSIONS</B></P><P>Our findings show that bacterial isolates possessing dual traits could be used simultaneously for textile effluent treatment and PGP. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry</P>
Robust Fault Detection Scheme for Asynchronous Switched Systems via Sliding Mode Observer

This work studies the fault detection problem for continuous-time asynchronous switched systems. For residual signal generation, we design a fault detection sliding mode observer such that residual characterizes the fault sensitivity level by H_ performance, and its robustness to process disturbance is determined by H∞ performance. Specifically, the challenge entails addressing the phenomenon of asynchronous switching between the controlled object and the observer, where there is a delay between the switching of the subsystems and the observer. A piece-wise Lyapunov function and average dwell time approach are applied to resolve the asynchronous switching stability within matched and unmatched periods. A feasible solution is derived based on linear matrix inequalities. For effective fault detection, a residual evaluation scheme is provided with a threshold. Finally, simulation results on a buck-boost converter are furnished to validate the usefulness of the proposed approach.
