      • SOLVING RESOURCE CONSTRAINED MULTIPLE ALTERNATIVE PROJECT SCHEDULING PROBLEMS WITH TIME AND RESOURCE BASED OBJECTIVES

Seren Ozmehmet Tasan,Mitsuo Gen 대한산업공학회 2008 대한산업공학회 춘계학술대회논문집 Vol.2008 No.5

In a multiple project environment, where there also exists alternative ways for performing each project, a new type of problem called resource constrained multiple project scheduling problem with alternative projects (rcmPSP/aP) forms. The rc-mPSP/aP may be viewed as a network of projects which also involves project alternatives. When dealing with alternative projects, there are two approaches, i.e., hierarchic and the monolithic approach. Traditionally, almost all of the researchers are using hierarchic approach. The hierarchical approach partitions the problem into a hierarchy of two subproblems, i.e. alternative project selection and scheduling, where the first one tries to identify the best alternative among projects (simplifies the problem into a rc-mPSP) and then the second one tries to solve the rc-mPSP using only these alternative projects. Therefore, in this approach, since the researchers are eliminating some features of the whole problem before scheduling procedure, the problem in these academic researches is losing its integrity. In this research, we are planning to apply a monolithic approach which considers these two sub-problems together. The monolithic approach formulates the problem as an exclusive scheduling problem and tries to solve the rcmPSP/ aP. Particularly, a genetic algorithm (GA) approach will be constructed in order to solving rcmPSP/ aP efficiently. Since there exist two sub-problems in rc-mPSP/aP, a multistage GA is going to be constructed to reflect the sub-problems together in the exclusive problem. Finally, time and resource based objective functions are going to be used together to evaluate the performance of the proposed monolithic multistage GA approach.

A Case Study of Human Resource Allocation for Effective Hotel Management

        Kayoko Murakami,Seren Ozmehmet Tasan,Mitsuo Gen,Takashi Oyabu 대한산업공학회 2011 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.10 No.1

The purpose of this study is to optimally allocate the human resources to tasks while minimizing the total daily human resource costs and smoothing the human resource usage. The human resource allocation problem (hRAP) under consideration contains two kinds of special constraints, i.e. operational precedence and skill constraints in addition to the ordinary constraints. To deal with the multiple objectives and the special constraints, first we designed this hRAP as a network problem and then proposed a Pareto multistage decision-based genetic algorithm (P-mdGA). During the evolutionary process of P-mdGA, a Pareto evaluation procedure called generalized Pareto-based scale-independent fitness function approach is used to evaluate the solutions. Additionally, in order to improve the performance of P-mdGA, we use fuzzy logic controller for fine-tuning of genetic parameters. Finally, in order to demonstrate the applicability and to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, P-mdGA is applied to solve a case study in a hotel, where the managers usually need helpful automatic support for effectively allocating hotel staff to hotel tasks.

      • Hotel Management Model

        Mitsuo Gen,Seren Ozmehmet Tasan,Kayoko Hirano 한국경영과학회 2008 한국경영과학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2008 No.5

In recent years, companies in the hospitality and tourism industry have been facing the competitiveness under the pressure of globalization. In such an environment, especially human resource management plays an important role helping the hotel to maintain or improve its place in the service environment. In human resource management, resource allocation, where allocation of the resources to the tasks has to be done in an effective way, is one of the central problems faced in hospitality and tourism industry. Traditionally, in academic literature, most of the researchers simplified the resource allocation problem and ignored some real-world issues such as operational precedence constraints among the tasks and skill requirements for the resources. In the past decade, to solve hotel management problems, several solution approaches, due to the problem complexity mostly heuristics and meta-heuristics, have been proposed. Among these solution approaches, evolutionary algorithms, which are proven to be efficient and robust, have been used in a variety of fields including hotel management area to find an optimal solution for the problem. The purpose of this tutorial is to present the applications of evolutionary algorithms in hotel management systems. The intent of the tutorial is to enable the researchers and practitioners in the conference to promote a better understanding of human resource allocation model with operational precedence constraints and skill requirements in real-world and evolutionary algorithm applications to solve this model.
