Inhibition of 3T3-L1 Adipocyte Differentiation by D-allulose

Obesity is a serious problem in modern society and its prevalence continues to increase worldwide, resulting in metabolic disorder related diseases. D-allulose, a sugar substitute, boasts a near-zero calorie value and regulates lipid accumulation. However, the molecular mechanism of D-allulose at the cellular level has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effect of D-allulose on 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation. D-allulose inhibits differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes into mature adipocytes, as examined by Oil Red O staining. The mRNA levels of genes involved in lipogenesis, including fatty acid synthase (FAS) and adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (aP2), were significantly decreased and intracellular triglyceride (TG) content was markedly reduced with D-allulose treatment. We also monitored the activity of major adipogenic transcription factors – CREB, SREBP-1c, and PPARγ – using 3T3-L1 reporter cell lines that were constructed to secrete Gaussia luciferase upon binding of a transcription factor to its DNA binding element. Collectively, D-allulose suppresses adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation through regulating adipogenic transcription factors and may have anti-obesity potential.

Adhesion skimmer is widely used in diverse environmental and industrial fields, such as oil spill clean-up and primary treatment of industrial oily wastewater. The adhesion skimmer works by allowing oils to adhere to the oleophilic surface of a rotating drum, belt, or disk on the water surface. However, the adhesion-based mechanism is ineffective for collecting highly viscous oils, such as low-sulfur fuel oil (LSFO) that is increasingly being used under the IMO 2020 regulation, because they tend to slide off the skimmer surface by forming thick heavy clumps rather than an oil film. In the present work, we provide a hydrophilic ratchet skimmer that collects oil by scooping it rather than relying on the previous adhesion mechanism. The scooped oil then can be completely detached from the hydrophilic ratchet, without using an additional scraper, by inducing a capillary impulse on the ratchet tip, which prevents an oil fouling on the skimmer surface. The hydrophilic ratchet skimmer is found to produce a higher oil recovery rate than the traditional adhesion-type skimmer regardless of oil viscosity.

Atypical facial pain is persistent facial pain in the absence of clinical neurological deficit. We experienced two patient who are diagnosed atypical facial pain with Classification of International Headache Society. They were treated by acupuncture at their cervical and facial region. After treatment, their Pain intensity numerical rating scale(PI-NRS) is decreased and EuroQol five dimensions questionnaire(EQ-5D) score is increased. Treatment of acupuncture at cervical and facial region could be effective for easing the clinical symptoms of atypical facial pain. Further studies are needed to find effective treatment for atypical facial pain. (J Korean Med Rehabil 2018;28(2):121-126)

Diaziridyl Ether of Bisphenol A

<P>Increased complexities in applications involving curable materials virtually need new materials that can overcome the limitations of existing ones. Resins, the structure of which is based on bisphenol A backbone terminated with three membered N-heterocycles-aziridines-have been synthesized, and their thermal-curing performance in solution and solid state was evaluated by NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies, differential scanning calorimetry, and single lap shear strength test and compared with that of analogous epoxy resin (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A; DGEBA). Results reveal that the chemical reactivity of the aziridine-based resins is fine-tunable by controlling the <I>N</I>-substituent of aziridine. These resins can undergo ring-opening polymerization in the presence of various curing agents under unprecedentedly mild conditions and show remarkably rapid curing rate, wide substrate scope, and excellent chemoselectivity as compared to the analogous epoxy resin. Our results demonstrate superb curing ability of aziridine, making it promising for applications in materials and polymer sciences.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
