<P>There have been controversial results regarding the association between brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val66Met polymorphism and anxiety-related traits such as harm avoidance (HA). We aimed to investigate the interaction between <I>BDNF</I> Val66Met polymorphism and negative life stressors in HA. <I>BDNF</I> Val66Met polymorphism was genotyped in 391 community-dwelling Koreans (152 males, 239 females; 43.2 ± 14.1 years old). The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and the Center for Epidemiological Studies for Depression Scale (CES-D) were self applied. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV axis I disorders and face-to-face interviews investigating negative life stressors within the last 6 months were also performed. There was no significant difference in TCI score, major depressive disorder prevalence and CES-D score among the 3 genotypes (94 Met/Met, 188 Val/Met and 109 Val/Val subjects). There was no significant difference in TCI scores between subjects with stressors and those without stressors, while more common major depressive episodes (p = 0.03) and higher CES-D scores (p < 0.001) were found in subjects with stressors. However, there was a significant interaction between the <I>BDNF</I> genotype and negative life stressors in HA (p = 0.02). Only subjects with the Val/Val genotype showed higher HA with recent negative stressors. Our finding suggests that <I>BDNF</I> Val66Met polymorphism might influence HA by interacting with recent negative stress experience.</P><P>Copyright © 2009 S. Karger AG, Basel</P>

Octacalcium phosphate(OCP, Ca8H2(PO4)6·5H2O) is one of biodegradable calcium phosphate materials with osteoconductivity and biocompatibility. It has the advantage of rapid bone formation and resorption due to the property of stimulating stromal cells to differentiate into osteoblasts. However, if OCP is inserted in body, it is immediately decomposed without maintaining of its shape as scaffolds due to their weak cohesive force between powder. On the other hand, hydroxyapatite (HA, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2), which has a crystal structure similar to that of OCP, remains in the body without decomposition until the bone defect is restored. In this study, the degradation behavior of OCP/HA disc with different amount of HA in SBF (simulated body fluid) solution was characterized in terms of the weight loss, pH variation and microstructure change with immersion duration in SBF solution. As a result, the OCP/HA disc was not quickly decomposed and maintained its own shape for 2 weeks regardless of HA content. In particular, the surface of 40HA specimen was uniformly dissolved and then CDHA (calcium deficient hydroxyapatite) phase were formed onto the surface of disc after 7 days in SBF solution. It would be suggested that the 40HA specimen would be suitable candidate material as the scaffolds for the restoration of bone defect.

<P>Recently, conjoined genes (CGs) have emerged as important genetic factors necessary for understanding the human genome. However, their formation mechanism and precise structures have remained mysterious. Based on a detailed structural analysis of 57 human CG transcript variants (CGTVs, discovered in this study) and all (833) known CGs in the human genome, we discovered that the poly(A) signal site from the upstream parent gene region is completely removed via the skipping or truncation of the final exon; consequently, CG transcription is terminated at the poly(A) signal site of the downstream parent gene. This result led us to propose a novel mechanism of CG formation: the complete removal of the poly(A) signal site from the upstream parent gene is a prerequisite for the CG transcriptional machinery to continue transcribing uninterrupted into the intergenic region and downstream parent gene. The removal of the poly(A) signal sequence from the upstream gene region appears to be caused by a deletion or truncation mutation in the human genome rather than post-transcriptional trans-splicing events. With respect to the characteristics of CG sequence structures, we found that intergenic regions are hot spots for novel exon creation during CGTV formation and that exons farther from the intergenic regions are more highly conserved in the CGTVs. Interestingly, many novel exons newly created within the intergenic and intragenic regions originated from transposable element sequences. Additionally, the CGTVs showed tumor tissue-biased expression. In conclusion, our study provides novel insights into the CG formation mechanism and expands the present concepts of the genetic structural landscape, gene regulation, and gene formation mechanisms in the human genome.</P>
The Functionality of Facial Appearance and Its Importance to a Korean Population
Kim, Young Jun,Park, Jang Wan,Kim, Jeong Min,Park, Sun Hyung,Hwang, Jae Ha,Kim, Kwang Seog,Lee, Sam Yong,Shin, Jun Ho Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2013 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.40 No.6
Background Many people have an interest in the correction of facial scars or deformities caused by trauma. The increasing ability to correct such flaws has been one of the reasons for the increase in the popularity of facial plastic surgery. In addition to its roles in communication, breathing, eating, olfaction and vision, the appearance of the face also plays an important role in human interactions, including during social activities. However, studies on the importance of the functional role of facial appearance. As a function of the face are scare. Therefore, in the present study, we evaluated the importance of the functions of the face in Korea. Methods We conducted an online panel survey of 300 participants (age range, 20-70 years). Each respondent was administered the demographic data form, Facial Function Assessment Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and standard gamble questionnaires. Results In the evaluation on the importance of facial functions, a normal appearance was considered as important as communication, breathing, speech, and vision. Of the 300 participants, 85% stated that a normal appearance is important in social activities. Conclusions The results of this survey involving a cross-section of the Korean population indicated that a normal appearance was considered one of the principal facial functions. A normal appearance was considered more important than the functions of olfaction and expression. Moreover, a normal appearance was determined to be an important facial function for leading a normal life in Korea.

The use of recycled aggregate, even for low-performance concrete, has been very limited because recycled aggregate, which contains a large amount of old mortar, is very low in quality. To produce a high-quality recycled aggregate, removing the paste that adheres to the recycled aggregate is very important. We have conducted research on a complex abrasion method, which removes the component of cement paste from recycled fine aggregate by using both a low-speed wet abrasion crusher as a mechanical process and neutralization as chemical processes, and well as research on the optimal manufacturing condition of recycled fine aggregates. Subsequently, we evaluated the quality of recycled fine aggregate manufactured using these methods, and tested the specimen made by this aggregate. As a result, it was found that recycled fine aggregates produced by considering the aforementioned optimal abrasion condition with the use of sulfuric acid as reactant showed excellent quality, recording a dry density of 2.4 and an absorption ratio of 2.94. Furthermore, it was discovered that gypsum, which is a reaction product occurring in the process, did not significantly affect the quality of aggregates. Furthermore, the test of mortar using this aggregate, when gypsum was included as a reaction product, showed no obvious retarding effect. However, the test sample containing gypsum recorded a long-term strength of 25.7MPa, whereas the test sample that did not contain gypsum posted a long-term strength of 29.4MPa. Thus, it is thought to be necessary to conduct additional research into the soundness and durability because it showed a clear reduction of strength.
