Objective: Sterilization (tubal sterilization and vasectomy) is a widely applied contraceptive method worldwide. Although most studies have described sterilization as a safe method, there are reports of tubal ligation (TL) and vasectomy complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of TL and vasectomy on the serum oxidative stress, specifically prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, over time. Methods: Male and female rats were classified into vasectomy, sham-vasectomy, TL, and sham-TL groups, respectively. The PAB and MDA levels were measured on days 15 and 45 and months 3 and 6 after the intervention. For female rats, blood sampling was performed during the diestrous phase and estradiol and progesterone were also measured. Results: Serum PAB and MDA increased after TL (p<0.05). Vasectomy increased serum MDA remarkably after 45 days, 3 months, and 6 months (p<0.05). After vasectomy, serum PAB also increased although not significantly. Serum estradiol and progesterone decreased remarkably in the TL group compared to the sham group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Bilateral TL and vasectomy both increase the serum oxidative stress; however the imbalance after TL was very noticeable. As for the TL, the reduction of serum estrogen levels can be involved in this imbalance. Complications followed by TL or vasectomy could be due to increased levels of oxidants. Thus, prescribing antioxidants during and or after surgery may be a solution.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of spinal-Z, derived from Peganum harmala seeds and Dracocephalum Kotschyi Boiss leaves, in patients with esophageal and stomach adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. Methods: Sixty-one patients with malignancies of the upper gastrointestinal tract were randomly assigned to one of two groups (treatment or control) in a double-blind fashion. Six capsules of Spinal-Z were prescribed to the patients with the regimen of 600 mg/m2/ day, and placebo to the control group, for six months. Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups with regard to age, sex, duration of cancer, type of cancer and family history of cancer. There were significant differences in abdominal pain, heartburn, constipation and vomiting between the two groups, following spinal-Z therapy. Evaluation of drug side effects showed no difference in cough or other respiratory symptoms, itching, headache or dizziness between the two groups, both before and after treatment. Conclusion: This study indicates that Spinal-Z is safe and efficacious in the management of patients with upper gastrointestinal tract cancers.

This study aimed to investigate the callus induction and shoot regeneration to produce rootstock from stems and leaves explants of the Ohadi and UCB-1 pistachio cultivars. Plant growth regulators (PGRs), including combinations of BAP, Kin, IAA, NAA, and 2, 4-D, were added to Murashige and Skoog (MS) or Driver and Kuniyuki Walnut (DKW) media to induce callus induction and regeneration. Obtained calli were transferred to the DKW medium containing three different concentrations, 2 and 4 mg L−1 of BAP and 1 mg L−1 + 2 mg L−1 of BAP + NAA, to compare the frequency of shoot regeneration. The highest callus induction rate (96%) was observed in the DKW medium supplemented with 2 mg L−1 Kin + 0.5 mg L−1 NAA in the Ohadi stems. The highest callus induction frequency for leaves was obtained in the DKW medium supplemented with 2 mg L−1 BAP + 0.1 mg L−1 2, 4-D concentrations for both UCB-1 (73%) and Ohadi cultivar (71%). The highest shoot regeneration rate in Ohadi stems (41%) and leaves (20%) was observed in the medium supplemented with 2 mg L−1 NAA + 1 mg L−1 BAP. It resulted in significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) in callus induction and shoot regeneration between stems and leaves; stems generated more calli and shoots than leaves, and Ohadi significantly (P ≤ 0.05) inducted calli and generated shoots more than UCB-1. Altogether, these regeneration protocols, achieved from stems and leaves of the Ohadi and UCB-1 cultivars, may be helpful in future pistachio genetic transformation.
