The Chungryang-stream is one of the tributaries of the Han-river which flows through the north-eastern part of Seoul city which is the largest one in Korea. The total length of the stream is 102.2 kilometers (main stream: 42.2 kilometers, its branch: 60 kilometers) and the study area is about 239 square kilometers with the population of 1.8 million. Major sources of pollution on the stream in study area are both of industrial and domestic waste water, which adversely affect the water quality of the down stream of the Han-river. The water quality measured by BOD_5 of the upstream of Chungryang-stream was about 7.0 milligrams per liter. However passing through the area of the Euijungbu, the water quality measured by BOD_5 was showing high concentration as about 40 milligrams per, liter due to the sewage from the Euijungbu city and the highly polluted water of Paeksuk-stream. No significant seasonal changes in DO concentration are shown in main stream except upstream and the ratio of T. coli/F. coli is 3. 4 in the upstream, 1. 6 in the midstream and 2.3 in the downstream. COD values of sediments range from 3. 0 to 384. 9 milligrams per liter and it is found a wide viriation of the values owing to the rainfall.

Background: Juvenile xanthogranuloma is a benign, self-limited disorder that usually occurs in infants and young children. However, it is rare in adults and there is a lack of study on adult xanthogranuloma. Objectives: To investigate the clinical, pathological, and immunohistochemical characteristics of adult xanthogranuloma. Methods: This study included 20 lesions from 19 patients with adult xanthogranuloma. Results: There was a male predilection (M:F=1.4:1), and mean age was 35.1±16.3 years (range 15~66 years), with the peak in the twenties. 65.0% of the lesions developed on the head and neck. The nodular form was more common than the papular form. Histological examination in 5 lesions (25.0%) revealed dense monomorphic histiocytic infiltration without lipidization and scattered eosinophils. There was also absence of multinuclear giant cells. 10 lesions (50.0%) had foamy histiocytic infiltration with variations of fully developed Touton giant cells. 3 lesions (15.0%) showed fibrohistiocytic proliferation. Histiocytes, including giant cells, were generally positive for FXIIIa (90.9%), vimentin (100%) and CD68 (100%). The CD1a, SMA and S-100 protein reactions were all negative. Tumor excision was the treatment for choice. Conclusion: This retrospective study has a small sample size and is limited to a single center, but we expect the results of this study to contribute to better understanding adult xanthogranuloma.
Epidermal inclusion cyst of the umbilicus in a child
( Sang-woo Park ),( Eui-sung Jung ),( Hyun-bin Kwak ),( Soo-kyung Park ),( Seok-kweon Yun ),( Han-uk Kim ),( Jin Park ) 대한피부과학회 2018 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.70 No.1
Epidermal cyst is a common benign cutaneous tumor that predominantly occurs on the face, trunk, and neck, where hair follicles are present. The umbilicus is one of the rarest sites of epidermal cyst, and only a few umbilical epidermal cysts have been reported, primarily in adults. Herein, we report a rare case of umbilical epidermal cyst in a child, which should be included in the differential diagnosis of umbilical skin lesions. A 7-year-old girl visited us for an asymptomatic protruding nodule on her umbilicus that had gradually increased in size over three years. Physical examination showed a 0.8 cm × 0.8 cm pearly gray, spherical nodule in the umbilicus. Dermoscopy revealed shiny white structures with arborizing vessels on the surface of the nodule. Ultrasonography revealed a well-circumscribed cyst confined to the skin layer, but tubular structures penetrating into the abdominal cavity or connecting to internal organs were not seen. Histopathologic findings of the tissue from complete excision of the mass showed a cyst that is lined with stratified squamous epithelium with granular layer and containing keratins. No complication or recurrence was observed during the 6 months after tumor removal.
Intracellular Flux Prediction of Recombinant Escherichia coli Producing Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid

Genome-scale metabolic model (GEM) can be used to simulate cellular metabolic phenotypes under various environmental or genetic conditions. This study utilized the GEM to observe the internal metabolic fluxes of recombinant Escherichia coli producing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Recombinant E. coli was cultivated in a fermenter under three conditions: pH 7, pH 5, and additional succinic acids. External fluxes were calculated from cultivation results, and internal fluxes were calculated through flux optimization. Based on the internal flux analysis, glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathways were repressed under cultivation at pH 5, even though glutamate dehydrogenase increased GABA production. Notably, this repression was halted by adding succinic acid. Furthermore, proper sucA repression is a promising target for developing strains more capable of producing GABA.
A case of cactus spine injury in a Korean woman
( Sang-woo Park ),( Eui-sung Jung ),( Hyun-bin Kwak ),( Soo-kyung Park ),( Jin Park ),( Han-uk Kim ),( Seok-kweon Yun ) 대한피부과학회 2018 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.70 No.1
The cactus spines can easily puncture the skin with only minor pressure. Lodged cactus spines can cause pain due to mechanical irritation, be a source of infection, and result in foreign body granulomas. Only one case with cactus spine injury has been reported in Korea to date. We report this case for educational purposes because there is few report regarding cactus spine injury in Korea. A 17-year-old Korean girl presented for evaluation of multiple purple colored macules and papules on the left cheek and left first finger. Two months earlier, while on voluntary service in Haiti, she accidentally got hurt by cactus. She immediately went to the emergency room and removed the spine with tweezer. In the next 3 weeks, she developed painful lesions at the sites of penetration. An ultrasound was performed on the lesions and wedge shaped echogenic material suspected as cactus spine and granuloma formation were observed. Surgical removal with biopsy was recommended, but rejected by the patient and her mother. We administered conservative treatments with oral analgesics, anti-biotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs. After the conservative treatments, the patients symptoms have been improving gradually for over 6 months.

To investigate the possibility of horizontal gene transfer between agricultural microorganisms and soil microorganisms in the environment, Bacillus subtilis KB producing iturin and the PGPR recombinant strain Pseudomonas fluorescens MX1 were used as model microorganisms. The soil samples of cucumber or tomato plants cultivated in pots and the greenhouse for a six month period were investigated by PCR, real-time PCR, Southern hybridization, and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) fingerprinting. Our data from Southern blotting and TRFLP patterns suggest that the model bacteria do not give significant impacts on the other bacteria in the pots and greenhouse during cultivation.
