The origin, progress of development, characteristics, difficulties or problems in utilization of cytoplasmic male sterility of chinese cabbage were reviewed. Suggestion for solving the defficulties or Problems arising from the S-gene activity and inbreeding in the course of recurrent back cross for developing and maintenance of CMS lines were discussed.

The technique of empty pollen grain counting on the stigma was compared with the pollination procedure as a detection method of self-incompatibility in Chinese cabbage. The result obtained was as follows. 1. It was found that the empty pollen grain counting method could be employed for identification of self-incompatible genes in Chinese cabbage. 2. The sporophytic self-incompatibility system was confirmed to be involved in Chinese Cabbage. 3. The self-incompatibility reaction was occured on the stigma of Chinese cabbage in the same way as other sporophytic self-incompatible plants.

Employing a set of six parent diallel crosses, the heterosis and inheritance mode of days to bolting and flowering were studied in Chinese cabbage. Mean heterosis was significant in days to bolting but not in days to flowering. High heritability was observed in both characters. A common major gene was postulated to explain the inheritance of over the lateness.
