Ultrasound-enhanced Subcritical Water Extraction of Naphthoquinone Pigments from Purple Gromwell (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) to Higher Yield and Bioactivity

        Ri-fu Yang,Ping-ping Huang,Tai-qiu Qiu 한국식품과학회 2013 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.22 No.3

Naphthoquinone pigments were extracted from purple gromwell (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) via ultrasoundenhanced subcritical water extraction (USWE). USWE was compared with supercritical CO2 fluid extraction (SCE) and Soxhlet extraction (SE) on the extraction yield of naphthoquinone pigments and the components and various activities of the extracts. The results show that the extraction yield of naphthoquinone pigments by USWE was the highest, up to 0.31%, while the yields achieved by SE and SCE were 0.21 and 0.19%, respectively. The 6major compounds were detected in these 3 extract samples but the USWE sample contained the fewest impurities. The extracts obtained with USWE showed the best inhibitory effects on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, followed by that with SE. However, the extracts obtained with SE showed the highest DPPH scavenging capacity and reducing action.

      • A field investigation on an expansive soil slope supported by a sheet-pile retaining structure

        Zhen Zhang,Yu-Liang Lin,Hong-Ri Zhang,Bin He,Guo-Lin Yang,Yong-Fu Xu 국제구조공학회 2024 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.91 No.3

An expansive soil in 4970 special railway line in Dangyang City, China, has encountered a series of landslides due to the expansion characteristics of expansive soil over the past 50 years. Thereafter, a sheet-pile retaining structure was adopted to fortify the expansive soil slope after a comprehensive discussion. In order to evaluate the efficacy of engineering measure of sheet-pile retaining structure, the field test was carried out to investigate the lateral pressure and pile bending moment subjected to construction and service conditions, and the local daily rainfall was also recorded. It took more than 500 days to carry out the field investigation, and the general change laws of lateral pressure and pile bending moment versus local daily rainfall were obtained. The results show that the effect of rainfall on the moisture content of backfill behind the wall decreases with depth. The performance of sheet-pile retaining structure is sensitive to the intensity of rainfall. The arching effect is reduced significantly by employing a series of sheet behind piles. The lateral pressure behind the sheet exhibits a single-peak distribution. The turning point of the horizontal swelling pressure distribution is correlated with the self-weight pressure distribution of soil and the variation of soil moisture content. The measured pile bending moment is approximately 44% of the ultimate pile capacity, which indicates that the sheet-pile retaining structure is in a stable service condition with enough safety reserve.

Methanol extract from radix of Glycyrrhizae uralensis attenuate methamphetamine-induced hyperlocomotor activity

        자오정린,왕옌,린훵,후우후이,저우후우??,장수찬,한누리,정대화,양재하,김상찬,자오르옹지에,Zhao, ZhengLin,Wang, Yan,Lin, Feng,Fu, Hui,Zhou, FuBo,Chang, Suchan,Han, Nu Ri,Jung, Dae Hwa,Yang, Chae Ha,Kim, Sang Chan,Zhao, RongJie The Korean Medicine Society for the Herbal Formula 2014 大韓韓醫學方劑學會誌 Vol.22 No.1

Background and objective: Methamphetamine (Meth) is a widely abused psychostimulant that produces hyperlocomotion in rodents. Radix of Glycyrrhizae uralensis comprises a variety of bioactive components that have neuroprotective effects. In a previous study, we have demonstrated methanol extracts from radix of Glycyrrhizae uralensis (MEGR) suppress acute cocaine-induced extracellular dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens. In the present study, we investigated the effect of MEGR on acute Meth-induced hyperlocomotion. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administered with MEGR (60 mg/kg and 180 mg/kg) 60 min prior to an intraperitoneal injection of Meth (1.0 mg/kg). Results: Behavioral analysis showed acute Meth greatly increased locomotor activities, while pretreatment with MEGR dose dependently inhibited the hyperlocomotion. In parallel, there were markedly increased levels of dopamine and its metabolite 3, 4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid in the nucleus accumbens tissues in Meth-treated rats, which were also almost completely reversed by 180 mg/kg MEGR. Conclusions: These results showed that radix of Glycyrrhizae uralensis attenuates Meth-induced hyperlocomotion by inhibiting dopamine synthesis and utilization, suggesting that radix of Glycyrrhizae uralensis might be effective in blocking the rewarding effect of Meth.
