Background Neferine, a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid, isolated from Nelumbo nucifera has a wide range of biological activities. Cobalt chloride (CoCl2) was known to mimic hypoxic condition. In the present study, we assessed the cytoprotective effect of neferine against CoCl2-induced oxidative stress in muscle cells. Methods Rhabdomyosarcoma cells were exposed to different concentrations of CoCl2, and the IC50 value was determined using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Lactate dehydrogenase and NO assays were performed in order to determine the cytotoxic effect of CoCl2. Reactive oxygen species generation and cellular antioxidant status were determined for evaluating oxidative stress. For analyzing the effect of neferine on CoCl2-induced apoptosis, propidium iodide staining was performed. Results The results of the present study indicate that CoCl2 induces cell death in a dose-dependent manner. Neferine pretreatment at 700 nM concentration offers better cytoprotection in the cells exposed to CoCl2. Lactate dehydrogenase and NO release in the culture medium were restored after neferine pretreatment. CoCl2 triggers time-dependent reactive oxygen species generation in muscle cells. Further, results of propidium iodide staining, mitochondrial membrane potential, and intracellular calcium accumulation confirm that neferine offers protection against CoCl2-induced hypoxic injury. Depleted activities of antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione S-transferase due to CoCl2 exposure were also reinstated in the group that received neferine pretreatment. Conclusion Our study suggests that neferine from N. nucifera offers protection to muscle cells by counteracting the oxidative stress induced by CoCl2.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>This paper addresses the problem of stability and stabilization issue for a class of fuzzy nonlinear uncertain systems with discrete and distributed time delays. By utilizing a new Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional together with free weighting matrix approach, a new set of delay-dependent sufficient conditions are derived which makes the closed loop system robustly asymptotically stable. In particular, the parameter uncertainties are assumed to be norm bounded. Further, a state feedback controller is proposed to guarantee the robust stabilization for uncertain systems and subsequently the controller is constructed in terms of the solution to a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMI). The derived conditions are expressed in the form of linear matrix inequalities which can be efficiently solved via standard LMI toolbox. Further, two numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and less conservatism of the obtained results.</P>
Non-fragile reliable control synthesis of the sugarcane borer

<P>This study considers the problem of non-fragile reliable control synthesis for mathematical model of interaction between the sugarcane borer (Diatraea saccharalis) and its egg parasitoid Trichogramma galloi. In particular, the control could be substituted by periodic releases of a small population of natural enemies and hence it is important to propose the time-varying controller in sugarcane borer. The main aim of this study is to design a state feedback non-fragile (time-varying) reliable controller such that the states of the sugarcane borer system reach the equilibrium point within the desired period. A novel approach is proposed to deal with the uncertain matrices which appear in non-fragile reliable control. Finally, simulations based on sugarcane borer systems are conducted to illustrate the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed design technique. The result reveals that the proposed non-fragile control provides good performance in spite of periodic releases of a small population of natural enemies occurs.</P>

<P>This study addresses the design of sampled-data feedback L8 controller for synchronisation of chaotic systems with external disturbances. By employing a novel time-dependent Lyapunov function which is positive definite at sampling times but not necessary between the sampling times, a new set of sufficient conditions in terms of linear matrix inequality is derived to a design sampled-data L8 control for synchronisation. More precisely, the proposed synchronisation results depend on both the lower and upper bounds on sampling interval and also the available information of the actual sampling pattern is fully used. Further, based on the Lyapunov function, an asymptotic anti-synchronisation criterion is derived by analysing the corresponding anti-synchronisation error systems. Subsequently, a set of sampled-data synchronisation control is designed in terms of solution to certain matrix inequalities that can be solved effectively by using available software. Finally, a numerical example based on boost converter DC-DC model is employed to show the effectiveness of the proposed sampled-data L8 synchronisation and anti-synchronisation control scheme.</P>

<P>In this paper, the state estimation problem is studied for vehicle lateral dynamics, which are approximated by the Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy model with probabilistic actuator faults. First, a fuzzy rule-based state estimator is constructed to estimate the exact state values of the considered system, and then a probability-dependent fault-tolerant state feedback controller is developed based on the estimated state values. Furthermore, by constructing an appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, some novel delay-dependent sufficient conditions that ensure the mean-square asymptotic stability and strict <TEX>$(Q_d,S_d,R_d)$</TEX>-dissipativity of the closed-loop fuzzy system are derived. Specifically, the proposed dissipative-based observer design scheme is developed by means of a set of linear matrix inequalities. Finally, the proposed state estimation and fault-tolerant dissipative controller are applied to the addressed system, which demonstrates the usefulness of the developed analytical results.</P>

<P>The problem of robust nonfragile synchronization is investigated in this paper for a class of complex dynamical networks subject to semi-Markov jumping outer coupling, time-varying coupling delay, randomly occurring gain variation, and stochastic noise over a desired finite-time interval. In particular, the network topology is assumed to follow a semi-Markov process such that it may switch from one to another at different instants. In this paper, the random gain variation is represented by a stochastic variable that is assumed to satisfy the Bernoulli distribution with white sequences. Based on these hypotheses and the Lyapunov-Krasovskii stability theory, a new finite-time stochastic synchronization criterion is established for the considered network in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Moreover, the control design parameters that guarantee the required criterion are computed by solving a set of linear matrix inequality constraints. An illustrative example is finally given to show the effectiveness and advantages of the developed analytical results.</P>
Capital Structure and Market Power Interaction and Firm Profitability: A USA Perspective

Using a sample of 585 U. S. firms over a period of 18 years from 1994 to 2011 and utilizing financial and stock-market data from Research Insight, this study tested the relationship between market power or product differentiation and capital structure (debt-versus-equity choice) by two way fixed effects time series cross sectional regression method; it also addressed the related proposed non-linear relation between market power and profitability of U. S. firms. Our results show a statistically significant cubic relation between two measures of Tobin's Q (market power,) namely product structure and two measures of capital structure, namely long-term debt to total assets and total debt to total assets. We also find a significant negative relation between debt ratios and lower levels of profitability, and positive relation between the two at higher levels of profitability. Further, we find a significantly positive relation between the growth rate of total assets and capital structure. Also, the relation between the natural logarithm of the number of shares and capital structure measures is positive. With regard to tangible fixed assets, we find support mostly for the trade-off hypothesis in that firms with higher fixed assets are able to use them as collateral to borrow more.
CAPITAL STRUCTURE AND PRODUCT MARKET INTERACTION: AN INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

Using financial and stock market data for five years, this study empirically tests the relation between capital structure and product market structure in an international context. The main finding is that firms with monopoly power use more long-term and total debt. This evidence is consistent with the output and limited liability effect theory and the agency theoretic risk shifting theory of capital structure and product market interaction.

<B>Controllability of nonlinear impulsive Ito type stochastic systems</B><P>In this article, we consider finite dimensional dynamical control systems described by nonlinear impulsive Ito type stochastic integrodifferential equations. Necessary and sufficient conditions for complete controllability of nonlinear impulsive stochastic systems are formulated and proved under the natural assumption that the corresponding linear system is appropriately controllable. A fixed point approach is employed for achieving the required result.</P>
