Approach to improve ZnO-based FBAR devices
Mai, L.,Lee, J.-Y.,Pham, V.-S.,Yoon, G. Institution of Engineering and Technology 2007 Electronics letters Vol.43 No.13

Presented is a new technique to improve the resonance characteristics of film bulk acoustic-wave resonator (FBAR) devices. The FBAR devices were fabricated on multilayer Bragg reflectors into which ultra-thin chromium (Cr) adhesion layers were inserted, followed by several kinds of thermal annealing processes. This technique resulted in excellent device improvement in terms of return loss and Q-factors.

An efficient method for extracting the texture browsing descriptor (TBD) of MPEG-7 using the nonlinear modified discrete Radon transform is proposed. Results show that the proposed method is very fast and extracts the components of TBD efficiently.

Selective oxidation fin channel MOSFETs with low source=drain series resistance
Cho, Y.K.,Roh, T.M.,Kwon, J.K.,Kim, J. Institution of Engineering and Technology 2007 Electronics letters Vol.43 No.13

Novel selective oxidation fin channel MOSFETs (SoxFETs) have been developed for fabricating fin channel MOSFETs with low source/drain (S/D) series resistance. Using this technique, SoxFETs have the surround gate structure and gradually increased S/D extension regions. The new structure demonstrates a 74% reduction in S/D series resistance compared with the control device. It was also found that the SoxFET behaved better than the control device in current drivability by suppressing subthreshold swing and drain induced barrier lowering characteristic degradation.

The millimetre wave (mmWave) band offers the potential for multi-gigabit indoor wireless personal area networks (WPANs). However, it has problems such as a short wavelength. To compensate, utilisation of directional antennas at the physical layer is recommended. For communications using this band, neighbour discovery using directional antennas (D-ND) is one of the crucial steps. In this study, the D-ND process is analysed mathematically for mmWave WPANs based on the concept of an exclusive region, and the values that are derived from the effect of using directional antennas. Maximising the neighbour discovery probability for a given amount of time is considered as an objective function. Performance measures are derived in closed forms, such as the probability of discovering a device for one self-advertising packet and the power-efficient sojourn time of a device in one direction. Numerical results are obtained using parameters based on the IEEE 802.15.3c standard. The results show that the efficiency of the D-ND depends not only on how often devices transmit a self-advertising packet, but also on antenna properties such as beamwidth. The mathematical analysis provides a theoretical basis for the D-ND process, and the obtained results illustrate the physical layer impact on neighbour discovery.

The electric field and ion flow are significantly influenced by the transverse wind around the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines. In this study, a new method using local characteristics is proposed to analyse the effect of wind. The present method, called method of local characteristic, updates the ion density based on the local characteristic curve in each second-order finite element method (FEM) element without Deutsch assumption. The defining equation of the characteristics is able to take into account the directional character of the information propagation in convective transport and has a better performance to satisfy the conservation law. The present approach is stable and efficient even in the presence of high-speed transverse wind. Calculations show good agreement with the measurement values of the reduced-scale unipolar model and the full-scale bipolar test line. Finally, the influence of wind on the electric field and ion current is discussed.

This study presents an innovative design for a wave energy converter (WEC). The system is based on a novel mechanical power take-off (PTO) device that can absorb wave energy by converting the bidirectional motion of an ocean wave into the one-way rotation of an electric generator. First, the PTO mechanism and configuration are described in detail. A coupled mechanical and hydrodynamic time-domain simulation of a hemispherical floating buoy connected to a bidirectional gearbox and torque generation device under regular waves were modelled in MATLAB((R))/Simulink((R)). The hydrodynamic forces acting on the semi-submerged floating buoy are calculated by employing linear potential wave theory. The friction behaviour in the PTO system is modelled by using Brian Armstrong's method. Next, an average wave energy and absorbed energy calculation was applied to investigate the conversion efficiency of the WEC. Finally, the experimental setup is carried out in a water tank under various conditions to evaluate the performance of WEC and validate the modelling. The results indicate that high-energy conversion efficiency of generating electricity from waves is approachable, thanks to the high efficiency of the proposed device.

This study addresses the design of sampled-data feedback L8 controller for synchronisation of chaotic systems with external disturbances. By employing a novel time-dependent Lyapunov function which is positive definite at sampling times but not necessary between the sampling times, a new set of sufficient conditions in terms of linear matrix inequality is derived to a design sampled-data L8 control for synchronisation. More precisely, the proposed synchronisation results depend on both the lower and upper bounds on sampling interval and also the available information of the actual sampling pattern is fully used. Further, based on the Lyapunov function, an asymptotic anti-synchronisation criterion is derived by analysing the corresponding anti-synchronisation error systems. Subsequently, a set of sampled-data synchronisation control is designed in terms of solution to certain matrix inequalities that can be solved effectively by using available software. Finally, a numerical example based on boost converter DC-DC model is employed to show the effectiveness of the proposed sampled-data L8 synchronisation and anti-synchronisation control scheme.
