      • Transition over 35 Years in the Incidence Rates of Primary Central Nervous System Tumors in Shanghai, China and Histological Subtyping Based on a Single Center Experience Spanning 60 Years

        Background: Only few epidemiological data on primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors in Shanghai have been reported. Methods: All cases of primary CNS tumors that were registered at Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were collected (1973-2007: urban Shanghai; 2003-2007: whole Shanghai city). Trends were analyzed using joinpoint analysis and rates were stratified by age, gender and region. Histological data were collected from both CDC and Huashan Hospital. Results: From 1973 to 2007, the five-year average incidence rate in urban Shanghai increased in both genders, especially in the elderly population. Joinpoint analysis showed the age-adjusted incidence rate for males increased first but then plateaued, whilst rates for females continued increasing over the 35 years. For the five-year status quo (2003-2007), rural had a higher age-adjusted incidence rate than urban populations, and females higher than males, especially those with advanced age. According to CDC (2003-2007) and Huashan Hospital (1951-2011), the two most common histological subtypes were neuroepithelial tumors (with male predominance) and meningiomas (with female predominance). Conclusions: In Shanghai, a steadily increased incidence rate of primary CNS tumors was observed in general, and in the elderly and female population in particular.

        Covalent Immobilization of Arginine onto Polyacrylonitrile-Based Membrane for the Effective Separation of Oil/Water Emulsion

        Membrane technology has been accepted as a very effective approach to purify oily wastewater. However, the serious membrane fouling induced by the adsorption of oily foulants significantly hinders the development of membrane technology in treating oily wastewater. To improve the anti-fouling property and oil/ water separation efficiency of membrane, this work reports on the covalent immobilization of short-chain arginine (Arg) molecules onto polyacrylonitrile/polyacrylonitrile- co-poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PAN/PAN-co-PGMA) blend membrane surface via a ring-opening reaction between epoxy groups and amine groups. It was found that the covalent immobilization of Arg molecules effectively increased the surface hydrophilicity of the membrane, resulting in a significant decrease of the interaction force between the foulants and the membrane surface. This typical characteristic was revealed by the pure water contact angle and the force-extension curve measurements. The Arg-immobilized membranes exhibited much higher separation efficiency against oil/water emulsions than the pristine PAN and PAN/PAN-co-PGMA membranes. Especially when the grafting amount of Arg was 157.3 μg/cm2, the oil rejection ratio of an Arg-immobilized membrane was as high as 99.2%. In addition, the flux recovery ratio of the membrane still reached 88.8%, even after two cycle filtrations of pure water and oil/water emulsion. These results indicated that the Arg-immobilized membrane may have practical applications for oil/water emulsion separation.

      • Shortest Path Analyses in the Protein-Protein Interaction Network of NGAL (Neutrophil Gelatinase-associated Lipocalin) Overexpression in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

        NGAL (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin) is a novel cancer-related protein involves multiple functions in many cancers and other diseases. We previously overexpressed NGAL to analyze its role in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In this study, a protein-protein interaction (PPI) was constructed and the shortest paths from NGAL to transcription factors in the network were analyzed. We found 28 shortest paths from NGAL to RELA, most of them obeying the principle of extracellular to cytoplasm, then nucleus. These shortest paths were also prioritized according to their normalized intensity from the microarray by the order of interaction cascades. A systems approach was developed in this study by linking differentially expressed genes with publicly available PPI data, Gene Ontology and subcellular localizaton for the integrated analyses. These shortest paths from NGAL to DEG transcription factors or other transcription factors in the PPI network provide important clues for future experimental identification of new pathways.

        A Study on the Narrative of Chinese Adult Animation Films -In focus of 〈Have a Nice Day〉-

        최근 중국은 성인을 위한 애니메이션이 점차적으로 관객들의 관심을 사고있다. 중국의 류젠 감독이 연출하고 각본을 쓴 ‘해브 어 나이스 데이’는 이러한 중국의 몇 안되는 성인층 대상의 애니메이션이다. 이 애니메이션은 ‘기존에 보지 못한 성인 애니메이션’이라는 홍보 슬로건을 사용하였고, 유아용 애니메이션에 집중되어 있던 중국 애니메이션에 새로움을 선사하였다. 성인 애니메이션에 관해서는, 많은 사람들이 “포르노그래피”와 “폭력성”이 있는 내용으로만 인식하고 있지만 이러한 비판적 사고를 가진 이야기는 어른들의 진지한 사고를 바탕으로 내러티브를 이해해야 하기 때문에 유아용 애니메이션과 다른 것이다. 단순히 선정성과 폭력성만으로 성인을 대상으로 한 애니메이션을 특징짓는 것은 위험한 정의이다. 해브 어 나이스 데이는 폭력의 존재를 회피하는 것이 아니라 폭력을 기계화하고 일상적인 존재로 바꾼다는 점에서 기존의 중국 애니메이션과는 다르다. 그래서 중국의 비판적이고 사실적인 애니메이션의 공백 속에서 매우 중요한 의미를 가지고 있다. 궁극적인 리얼리즘으로 창조적인 애니메이션 언어를 활용해 인간 본성의 이질화라는 진지한 주제를 유머를 잃지 않고 정확하고 날카롭게 해석한다. 그런 의미에서 이 애니메이션은 개인적인 스타일이 강한 애니메이션일 뿐만 아니라, 현재 사회에 중요한 메시지를 전달한다. 그것은 중국 애니메이션에 다른 차원을 가져 올 것이고 중국 애니메이션의 새로움을 배가할 것으로 사료된다. 해브 어 나이스 데이를 중심으로 중국 성인층 애니메이션의 주제, 서사구조, 서사언어를 심층분석하였다. 그리고 시각적 특징과 언어적 표현에 집중하여 사실적인 성인 애니메이션의 특징을 정리하였다. 이 애니메이션은 사실적이고 은유적인 기법과 간단한 대사와 방언의 혼합 그리고 암묵적인 음향효과로 이야기를 진행하면서 과장되지 않은 캐릭터들로 사회의 단면을 보여주고 있다. 본 연구는 중국의 성인 애니메이션 제작에 도움이 될 수 있는 이론적인 참고자료를 제공할 것이다. Recently, animation for adults in China is gradually attracting the attention of the audience. 〈Have a Nice Day〉, directed and written by Chinese director Liu Zhen, is one of the few adult animations in China. This animation used a promotional slogan called “adult animation that has not been seen before” and brought freshness to Chinese animation, which was concentrated on kids animation. As for adult animation, many people perceive it only as “pornography” and “violence”, but stories with such critical thinking are different from childhood animation because they need to understand narratives based on serious adult thinking. It is a dangerous definition to characterize animation targeting adults simply by sensationalism and violence. Have a Nice Day is different from conventional Chinese animation in that it does not avoid the existence of violence, but mechanizes violence and turns it into a daily existence. Therefore, it has a very important meaning in the absence of critical and realistic animation in China. Using creative animation language as the ultimate realism, the serious theme of heterogeneity of human nature is interpreted accurately and sharply without losing humor. In that sense, this animation is not only an animation with a strong and unique personal style, but also conveys an important message to the current society. It will bring a different dimension to Chinese animation and is expected to further develop the novelty of Chinese animation. Focusing on Have a Nice Day, the theme, narrative structure, and narrative language of Chinese adult animation were analyzed in depth. In addition, the characteristics of realistic adult animation were summarized by focusing on visual characteristics and verbal expressions. This animation shows a crosssection of society with characters that are not exaggerated as the story proceeds with a mixture of realistic and metaphorical techniques, simple lines and dialects, and implicit sound effects. This study will provide theoretical references that can help produce adult animations in China.

        Synthesis of Cobalt-Iron Prussian Blue Analogues Nanotubes by CTAB Soft-Template Method

        Three cobalt-iron Prussian Blue Analogues (PBAs) nanotubes contained with different alkali metal cations of K, Rb or Cs, respectively, were prepared by using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)/ethanol-water micelles as soft templates. The products were characterized by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron micrograph (SEM), which confirmed the composition of the substances and their unique nanotube structures. Furthermore, the formation mechanism of the PBAs nanotubes was discussed and provided useful insight for further synthesis of nanotubes of other Prussian blue analogues.

      • Convolutive Independent Component Analysis Based on First-order Statistics for Complex-valued Source Extraction

        This paper addresses the problem of independent component extraction of complex-valued signals in convolutive mixtures. Most previous research focused on real-valued convolutive ICA, and corresponding solution methods are generally computationally complex and inefficient for real application. In order to solve the problem, we propose a novel method based on first-order statistics, which includes several single-step and iterative separators to satisfy different demands of engineering applications. We also provided the theoretical performance analysis, which is validated by experimental simulations. It is observed from the simulations that various factors (especially the noncircularity) affect the extraction performance of separators; hence we offer some advice on how to choose separators properly. Besides, the proposed iterative separators generally perform better and converge faster compared to two complex FastICA algorithms.

        Deformation Characteristics and Sealing Performance of Metallic O-rings for a Reactor Pressure Vessel

        This paper provides a reference to determine the seal performance of metallic O-rings for a reactor pressure vessel (RPV). A nonlinear elastic-plastic model of an O-ring was constructed by the finite element method to analyze its intrinsic properties. It is also validated by experiments on scaled samples. The effects of the compression ratio, the geometrical parameters of the O-ring, and the structure parameters of the groove on the flange are discussed in detail. The results showed that the numerical analysis of the O-ring agrees well with the experimental data, the compression ratio has an important role in the distribution and magnitude of contact stress, and a suitable gap between the sidewall and groove can improve the sealing capability of the O-ring. After the optimization of the sealing structure, some key parameters of the O-ring (i.e., compression ratio, cross-section diameter, wall thickness, sidewall gap) have been recommended for application in megakilowatt class nuclear power plants. Furthermore, air tightness and thermal cycling tests were performed to verify the rationality of the finite element method and to reliably evaluate the sealing performance of a RPV.

        LES of wind environments in urban residential areas based on an inflow turbulence generating approach

        Wind environment in urban residential areas is an important index to consider when evaluating the living environment. However, due to the complexity of the flow field in residential areas, it is difficult to specify the correct inflow boundary conditions in the large eddy simulation (LES). In this paper, the weighted amplitude wave superposition (WAWS) is adopted to simulate the fluctuating velocity data, which satisfies the desired target wind field. The fluctuating velocity data are given to the inlet boundary of the LES by developing an UDF script, which is implemented into the FLUENT. Then, two numerical models - the empty numerical wind tunnel model and the numerical wind tunnel model with spires and roughness elements are established based on the wind tunnel experiment to verify the present method. Finally, the turbulence generation approach presented in this paper is used to carry out a numerical simulation on the wind environment in an urban residential area in Lisbon. The computational results are compared with the wind tunnel experimental data, showing that the numerical results in the LES have a good agreement with the experimental results, and the simulated flow field with the inlet fluctuations can generate a reasonable turbulent wind field. It also shows that strong wind velocities and turbulent kinetic energy occur at the passageways, which may affect the comfort of people in the residential neighborhood, and the small wind velocities and vortexes appear at the leeward corners of buildings, which may affect the spreading of the pollutants.

        Development of a double-sliding friction damper (DSFD)

        In practical engineering, the friction damper is a widely used energy dissipation device because of its large deformation capacity, stable energy dissipation capability, and cost effectiveness. While based on conventional friction dampers, the double-sliding friction damper (DSFD) being proposed is different in that it features two sliding friction forces, i.e., small and large sliding friction forces, rather than a single-sliding friction force of ordinary friction dampers. The DSFD starts to deform when the force sustained exceeds the small-sliding friction force, and stops deforming when the deformation reaches a certain value. If the force sustained exceeds the large sliding friction force, it continues to deform. Such a double-sliding behavior is expected to endow structures equipped with the DSFD better performance in both small and large earthquakes. The configuration and working mechanism of the DSFD is described and analyzed. Quasi-static loading tests and finite element analyses were conducted to investigate its hysteretic behavior. Finally, time history analysis of the single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) and multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems were performed to investigate the seismic performance of DSFD-equipped structures. For the purpose of comparison, tests on systems equipped with conventional friction dampers were also performed. The proposed DSFD can be realized perfectly, and the DSFD-equipped structures provide better performances than those equipped with conventional friction dampers in terms of interstory drift and floor acceleration. In particular, for the MDOF system, the DSFD helps the structural system to have a uniform distributed interstory drift.

        Attention and Working Memory Task-Load Dependent Activation Increase with Deactivation Decrease after Caffeine Ingestion

        Purpose: Caffeine is the most widely consumed psychostimulant. It is often adopted as a tool to modulate brain activations in fMRI studies. However, its pharmaceutical effect on task-induced deactivation has not been fully examined in fMRI. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of caffeine on both activation and deactivation under sustained attention. Materials and Methods: Task fMRI was acquired from 26 caffeine naive healthy volunteers before and after taking caffeine pill (200 mg). Results: Statistical analysis showed an increase in cognition-load dependent task activation but a decrease in load dependent de-activation after caffeine ingestion. Increase of attention and memory task activation and its load-dependence suggest a beneficial effect of caffeine on the brain even though it has no overt behavior improvement. The reduction of deactivation by caffeine and its load-dependence indicate reduced facilitation from task-negative networks. Conclusion: Caffeine affects brain activity in a load-dependent manner accompanied by a disassociation between task-positive network and task-negative network.
