Colour Changes in Meat of Foals as Affected by Slaughtering Age and Post-thawing Time

        Palo, Pasquale De,Maggiolino, A.,Centoducati, P.,Tateo, A. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2012 Animal Bioscience Vol.25 No.12

The aim of the present work was to investigate how colour changes of foal meat can vary after thawing out in relation to the slaughtering age of the horses and to the post-thawing time. Eighteen Italian Heavy Draught Horse (IHDH) foals were used for the trial. They were subdivided in three groups according to their slaughtering age (6, 11 and 18 months). Two different surfaces were investigated for each sample: a fresh cut surface (daily renewed cutting surface: DRCS), and not-renewed cutting surface (NRCS). The redness of both investigated surfaces increased with slaughtering age (p<0.01). Moreover, this parameter decreased during post-thawing time (p<0.01) only on the NRCS, probably due to the myoglobin oxidation processes. Colour is an important visual cue denoting perceived quality by consumers. So, by a chromatic perspective the thawed meat of IHDH foals slaughtered at 6 and 11 months proved to be that which best meets the market requirements.

Slaughtering Age Effect on Carcass Traits and Meat Quality of Italian Heavy Draught Horse Foals

        De Palo, P.,Maggiolino, A.,Centoducati, P.,Tateo, A. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2013 Animal Bioscience Vol.26 No.11

The present work describes the effect of slaughtering age on horse carcass traits and on meat quality. Eighteen male Italian heavy draught horse (IHDH) breed foals were employed in the study. Soon after foaling they were randomly subdivided in 3 groups according to 3 age at slaughtering classes: 6 months old, 11 months old and 18 months old. Live weight, hot carcass weight and dressing percentage of each animal were recorded. After slaughtering, meat samples were collected from Longissimus Dorsi muscle between 13th and 18th thoracic vertebra of each animal and then analyzed. The right half carcass of each animal was then divided in cuts. Each one was subdivided into lean, fat and bones. Then, the classification of the lean meat in first and second quality cuts was performed according to the butchers' customs. Older animals were characterized by a lower incidence of first quality cuts (p<0.01) on carcass. Younger animals showed greater content in protein (p<0.01). Fatty acid profile showed an increasing trend of PUFA connected to the increasing of slaughtering age (p<0.05). The unsaturation index of intramuscular fatty acids was not affected by slaughtering age, confirming that horse meat, if compared to beef, is more suitable from a nutritional point of view. Season influenced reproduction, birth as well as production aspects of this species. The different slaughtering age could represent the way to produce meat of IHDH foals during the entire year without change in the qualitative standard expected by consumers.

      • Classification of Emotions of Angry and Disgust

Hemanta Kumar Palo,Mihir Narayana Mohanty 한국산학기술학회 2015 SmartCR Vol.5 No.3

Researchers have put enormous effort in the field of emotional speech detection by characterizing and classifying human emotions. Speech emotions are overlapping, and the taxonomy of emotions is not well defined. The presence of overlapping and emotions with similar features in speech has made developing a detection system intriguing and complex. Confusing and conflicting results reported in literature have made this domain more challenging. Very little has been attempted so far by speech engineers in distinguishing similar emotions. One such issue has been addressed here. The aim of this work is threefold. Initially, speech emotions of a similar nature such as anger and disgust were characterized using the common prosodic features. Secondly, the classification of these emotions was made using a multilayer perceptron network, along with the extracted features. Finally, these emotions were compared against neutral emotions for the characterization and classification, and the final outcome was summarized. We were able to put a boundary between these two similar natured speech emotions, though the difference is insignificant.

      • Development of a Wearable Device based on Reaction Wheels to deliver Kinesthetic Cues for Balance Training

Muhammad Raheel Afzal,Carlos Ernesto Palo Pena,Jungwon Yoon 제어로봇시스템학회 2017 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2017 No.10

Reaction Wheels (RW) have traditionally been used in spacecraft to control their attitude. This paper presents a novel application of RW to deliver kinesthetic cues for balance training through the development of a wearable device that can deliver kinesthetic cues alike light touch. A prototype wearable device has been designed that has 4 RWs as main actuators to generate kinesthetic cues, and additionally the system includes a wireless interface to a computer for evaluation purposes. Two modes of controlling the device output were implemented, PID and Saturated PID (S.PID). For experimental verification, seven young healthy participants performed several balance tasks. The results thus obtained indicate significant (P<0.05) difference in participant’s Mediolateral (ML) trunk sway between experiments conducted without and with kinesthetic cues, and differences in ML trunk sway between PID and S.PID control modes. Thus the relatively small torques delivered by RWs of the proposed device can provide kinesthetic cues for balance assistance.

      • Evaluating the Effects of Kinesthetic Biofeedback Delivered Using Reaction Wheels on Standing Balance

Afzal, Muhammad Raheel,Eizad, Amre,Palo Peñ,a, Carlos Ernesto,Yoon, Jungwon Hindawi 2018 Journal of healthcare engineering Vol.2018 No.-

<P>Aging, injury, or ailments can contribute to impaired balance control and increase the risk of falling. Provision of light touch augments the sense of balance and can thus reduce the amount of body sway. In this study, a wearable reaction wheel-based system is used to deliver light touch-based balance biofeedback on the subject's back. The system can sense torso tilt and, using reaction wheels, generates light touch. A group of 7 healthy young individuals performed balance tasks under 12 trial combinations based on two conditions each of standing stance and surface types and three of biofeedback device status. Torso tilt data, collected from a waist-mounted smartphone during all the trials, were analyzed to determine the efficacy of the system. Provision of biofeedback by the device significantly reduced RMS of mediolateral (ML) trunk tilt (<I>p</I> < 0.05) and ML trunk acceleration (<I>p</I> < 0.05). Repeated measures ANOVA revealed significant interaction between stance and surface on reduction in RMS of ML trunk tilt, AP trunk tilt, ML trunk acceleration, and AP trunk acceleration. The device shows promise for further applications such as virtual reality interaction and gait rehabilitation.</P>

Effects of microwave and ultrasound exposure to microsphere particles made out of different classes of inorganic and organic materials

        Chandima Weerakkody,Curtis Guild,Laura A. Achola,Joseph Palo,Steven L. Suib 한국공업화학회 2018 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.65 No.-

In this study polymer, metal oxide and polymer-PZT composite microsphere materials were prepared by either hydrothermal or microwave assisted methods. Materials were subjected to microwave and ultrasound irradiation under specific conditions in order to understand their mechanical stability and morphological changes in dimensions. Scanning electron microscopy imaging was carried out before and after each irradiation and clear differences were observed depending on irradiation method and sample composition.
