Spatial Variation Ecological Quality Assessment of Live and Dead Molluscan Assemblages in the Aegean Sea

Aslan Herdem,Ovalis Panayotis 한국해양과학기술원 2023 Ocean science journal Vol.58 No.3

For accurate estimation and correct identification of species of EcoQS for macrozoobenthos in MSFD, the distinction between dead and living molluscan specimens is significant. In this study, EcoQS values of Turkish Aegean Sea coasts were calculated separately based on live and dead + live molluscan communities using Shannon–Wiener Indices, Bentix, AMBI, M-AMBI and TUBI biotic indices. A total of 219 mollusks species and 76,170 ind.m−2 were found but only 57 species and 2227 ind. m−2 of them were encountered as live and 2 species (Turbonilla sinuosa and Alvania zaraensis) of dead individuals were identified as new records for the Turkish coasts. Stations with rare live molluscan species numbers have lower ecological qualities than the indices made with dead + live. However, in the presence of opportunistic species among dead + living species, the situation is reversed. In this study, we discuss the results of the aggregation of dead molluscan individuals, and the differences and correlations between the indices according to the different molluscan data sets. Thanks to the aggregation of dead molluscan individuals obtained in the sampling area, information about the anthropogenic disturbances in the recent past can be obtained. While there is a correlation between EcoQS of indices of the dead + live mollusk species, this correlation is not found in only living individuals. Also a similarity was found between M-AMBI and TUBI, which used the Shannon–Wiener index in their calculation.

Decellularization of Trachea With Combined Techniques for Tissue-Engineered Trachea Transplantation

        Aysegul Batioglu-Karaaltin,Ercüment Ovali,Mehmet V Karaaltin,Murat Yener,Mehmet Yılmaz,Fatma Eyüpoğlu,Yetkin Zeki Yılmaz,Erol Rüştü Bozkurt,Necdet Demir,Esma Konuk,Ergun Süreyya Bozdağ,Özgür Yiğit,Har 대한이비인후과학회 2019 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.12 No.1

Objectives. The purpose of this study is to shorten the decellularization time of trachea by using combination of physical, chemical, and enzymatic techniques. Methods. Approximately 3.5-cm-long tracheal segments from 42 New Zealand rabbits (3.5±0.5 kg) were separated into seven groups according to decellularization protocols. After decellularization, cellular regions, matrix and strength and endurance of the scaffold were followed up. Results. DNA content in all groups was measured under 50 ng/mg and there was no significant difference for the glycosaminoglycan content between group 3 (lyophilization+deoxycholic acid+de-oxyribonuclease method) and control group (P=0.46). None of the decellularized groups was different than the normal trachea in tensile stress values (P>0.05). Glucose consumption and lactic acid levels measured from supernatants of all decellularized groups were close to group with cells only (76 mg/dL and 53 mg/L). Conclusion. Using combination methods may reduce exposure to chemicals, prevent the excessive influence of the matrix, and shorten the decellularization time.

Synbiotics use for preventing sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis in very low birth weight neonates: a randomized controlled trial

Pehlevan, Ozge Serce,Benzer, Derya,Gursoy, Tugba,Karatekin, Guner,Ovali, Fahri The Korean Pediatric Society 2020 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.63 No.6

Background: Probiotics and prebiotics have strain-specific effects on the host. Synbiotics, a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics, are proposed to have more beneficial effects on the host than either agent has alone. Purpose: We performed a randomized controlled trial to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium together with oligosaccharides and lactoferrin on the development of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) or sepsis in very low birth weight neonates. Methods: Neonates with a gestational age ≤32 weeks and birth weight ≤1,500 g were enrolled. The study group received a combination of synbiotics and lactoferrin, whereas the control group received 1 mL of distilled water as placebo starting with the first feed until discharge. The outcome measures were the incidence of NEC stage ≥2 or late-onset cultureproven sepsis and NEC stage ≥2 or death. Results: Mean birth weight and gestational age of the study (n=104) and the control (n=104) groups were 1,197±235 g vs. 1,151±269 g and 29±1.9 vs. 28±2.2 weeks, respectively (P>0.05). Neither the incidence of NEC stage ≥2 or death, nor the incidence of NEC stage ≥2 or late-onset culture-proven sepsis differed between the study and control groups (5.8% vs. 5.9%, P=1; 26% vs. 21.2%, P=0.51). The only significant difference was the incidence of all stages of NEC (1.9% vs. 10.6%, P=0.019). Conclusion: The combination of synbiotics and lactoferrin did not reduce NEC severity, sepsis, or mortality.
