An Onboard Processor (OBP) that can perform base-band circuit switching has been designed for in-orbit mobile satellite communications experiments using Japanese Engineering Test Satellite VIII (ETS-VIII). The Onboard Processor can exchange both 5.6 kbps voice and 32 kbps data using the MC-TDMA access method and can provide about 1,000 channels with digital signal processing techniques.

Six 1-month-old piglets were intravenously injected with deoxynivalenol (DON) at the concentration of 1 mg/kg body weight, with three pigs each necropsied at 6 and 24 h post-injection (PI) for investigation of hepatotoxicity and immunotoxicity with special attention to apoptotic changes and cytokine mRNA expression. Histopathological examination of the DON-injected pigs revealed systemic apoptosis of lymphocytes in lymphoid tissues and hepatocytes. Apoptosis of lymphocytes and hepatocytes was confirmed by the TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end-labeling (TUNEL) method and immunohistochemical staining against singlestranded DNA and cleaved caspase-3. The number of TUNELpositive cells in the thymus and Peyer’s patches of the ileum was increased at 24 h PI compared to 6 h PI, but the peak was at 6 h PI in the liver. The mRNA expression of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-18, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in the spleen, thymus and mesenteric lymph nodes were determined by semi-quantitative RT-PCR, and elevated expression of IL-1β mRNA at 6 h PI and a decrease of IL-18 mRNA at 24 h PI were observed in the spleen. IL-1β and IL-6 mRNA expressions increased significantly at 6 h PI in the thymus, but TNF-α decreased at 6 h PI in the mesenteric lymph nodes. These results show the apoptosis of hepatocytes suggesting the hepatotoxic potential of DON, in addition to an immunotoxic effect on the modulation of proinflammatory cytokine genes in lymphoid organs with extensive apoptosis of lymphocytes induced by acute exposure to DON in pigs.

What is already known, Tachycardia is seen in almost all cases with febrile status epilepticus caused by an underlying fever, infection, dehydration or the seizure itself. What is new in the current study, Atrial tachycardia should be considered in patients with febrile status epilepticus if the tachycardia is resistant to anticonvulsive treatment.
A convinient method to evaluate promoter activity with transformed hairy root culture

Transformed hairy roots of tobacco were used to measure activity of some promoters, horseradish peroxidase promoter (POP), 500 bp and 300 bp region of 5' upstream from Pueraria lobata chalcone synthase gene (CHSpro500, CHSpro300) and cauliflower mosaic virus 35S (CaMV 35S) promoter, which were fused to β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene, respectively. Hairy roots induced by Agrobacterium rhizogenes exhibited GUS activity in strength order of POP, CaMV 35S, CHSpro500 and CHSpro300, and it was suggested that for introduction and expression of foreign gene into the plant genome, POP may be applied as the potent promoter of plant origin in place of CaMV 35S promoter. Moreover, elicitor-response of Pueraria lobata CHS promoter was investigated with this assay system and it was verified that CHS promoter responds well to exogenous elicitor, yeast extract and CaCl₂. Although protoplasts or transgenic plants have been used widely as the materials for that purpose for the last decade, our results suggested that our alternative method was the simple and reasonable one to evaluate promoter activity.
