A mixed infection of Haemophilus paragallinarum (Hpg), Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and M. synoviae (Ms) was detected in layers of a poultry farm in Iwate prefecture in Japan by pathological, serological and bacteriological investigation. Hpg strains were isolated from three of five birds investigated and all strains were identified to be type C. The Hpg isolates were more susceptible in vitro to a combination of sulfamonomethoxine and ormetoprim (Ektecin) than each of sulfamethoxasol, sulfamonomethoxine, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, streptomycin, erythromycin and thianphinicol. After a total of six days' medication of 1% feed additive Ektecin, symptoms of infectious coryza of hens in the farm almost disappeared and no Hpg was detected even from birds showing nasal discharge.
THE COMBINATION EFFECT OF SULFAMETHOXAZOLE AND TRIMETHOPRIM AGAINST ANIMAL INTESTINAL BACTERIA

Combination effects of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) against nine gram positive bacterial strains and 43 gram negative bacterial strains which included 40 strains of animal intestinal bacteria were studied in vitro. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of SMX and TMP alone and 20:1 (SMX : TMP) mixture (ST) were investigated by the method recommended by Ad Hoc Committee of the Japan Society of Chemotherapy for the Evaluation of Sensitivity Testing Methods for Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. MICs of ST were more potentiated than those of SMX alone in 8 of 9 gram positive strains and 40 of 43 gram negative strains. Especially, 38 strains of 40 intestinal bacteria showed significant susceptibility to ST as compared to SMX. These results suggest a strong synergistic activity of ST mixture against animal intestinal bacteria, The activity was considered to be comparable to those of other current antibiotics.

The objective of this study is to propose a method to calculate prediction intervals for oneday-ahead hourly forecasts of photovoltaic power generation and to evaluate its performance. One year of data of two systems, representing contrasting examples of forecast’ accuracy, were used. The method is based on the maximum likelihood estimation, the similarity between the input data of future and past forecasts of photovoltaic power, and on an assumption about the distribution of the error of the forecasts. Two assumptions for the forecast error distribution were evaluated, a Laplacian and a Gaussian distribution assumption. The results show that the proposed method models well the photovoltaic power forecast error when the Laplacian distribution is used. For both systems and intervals calculated with 4 confidence levels, the intervals contained the true photovoltaic power generation in the amount near to the expected one.

High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was applied for determination of guanine plus cytosine (G + C) contents of DNA of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens. By values of G + C contents, a reference strain and 20 wild strains of B. fibrisolvens were classified into at least two distinct subgroups, i.e. G + C contents of 18 strains were 38-40 mol% and those of 3 strains including the reference strain were 43-45 mol%. Clear relationships were not observed between G + C contents and biological properties of 21 strains of B. Fibrisolvens.

The objective of this study is to compare the suitability of a non-parametric and 3 parametric distributions in the characterization of prediction intervals of photovoltaic power forecasts with high confidence levels. The prediction intervals of the forecasts are calculated using a method based on recent past data similar to the target forecast input data, and on a distribution assumption for the forecast error. To compare the suitability of the distributions, prediction intervals were calculated using the proposed method and each of the 4 distributions. The calculations were done for one year of day-ahead forecasts of hourly power generation of 432 PV systems. The systems have different sizes and specifications, and are installed in different locations in Japan. The results show that, in general, the non-parametric distribution assumption for the forecast error yielded the best prediction intervals. For example, with a confidence level of 85% the use of the non-parametric distribution assumption yielded a median annual forecast error coverage of 86.9%. This result was close to the one obtained with the Laplacian distribution assumption (87.8% of coverage for the same confidence level). Contrasting with that, using a Gaussian and Hyperbolic distributions yielded median annual forecast error coverage of 89.5% and 90.5%.

A total of 526 domestic and experimental animals in Miyagi prefecture, Japan were investigated for fecal carriage of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. C. jejuni was detected in chickens (8.2%), dogs (6.3%), pigs (4.3%), cattle (1.8%) and hamsters (1.4%). C. coli was only detected from pigs (20.7%). Drug susceptibility test was performed on 5 strains of C. jejuni isolated from chickens and 13 strains of C. coli isolated from pigs to tylosin (TS), thianphenicol (TP), carbadox (CDX), chroltetracyclin (CTC), vancomycin (VCM), cefoperazone (CPZ), latamoxef (LMOX), GM were highly effective and CTC, CP and PL were moderately effective against both C. jejuni and C. coli. TS and TPH were moderately effective against C. jejuni; however, they were less effective to C. coli. One strain of C. jejuni against CTC considered to be drug resistant. The results suggest that C. jejuni and C. coli can be controlled by several drugs effectively, although a drug resistant strain exists.

The objective of this study is to analyze 3 approaches to objectively set the configuration parameters of a support vector regression algorithm to forecast insolation. The approaches were based on techniques such as multifold cross-validation, grid search, and frequency analysis. The ${\nu}$ support vector regression with a Gauss function as kernel function was used to forecast insolation. The configuration parameters set were the cost parameter, the gamma parameter in the kernel function, and the ${\nu}$ parameter. The analysis was done using weather related data of Tsukuba city in Japan, from January to December of 2009. The results show that variations of the forecast errors caused by using the different approaches were small, 4.5% in the worst case. Moreover, any of the proposed approaches yielded forecasts of insolation with annual root mean square errors lower than $0.12kWh/m^2$ and mean absolute errors lower than $0.07kWh/m^2$, what shows their applicability.
