To investigate the effect of dietary Acanthopanax senticosus polysaccharide (ASPS) on growth performance, immunity, blood parameters and mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in immunologically challenged piglets, an experiment employing $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement concerning dietary ASPS treatment (0 or 800 mg/kg) and immunological challenge (lipopolysaccharide [LPS] or saline injection) was conducted with 64 crossbred piglets (weaned at 28 d of age, average initial body weight of $7.25{\pm}0.21kg$) assigned to two dietary ASPS treatments with 8 replicates of 4 pigs each. Half of the piglets of per dietary treatment were injected with LPS or saline on d 14. Blood samples were obtained at 3 h after immunological injection on d 14 and piglets were slaughtered to obtain spleen samples on d 21. Dietary ASPS did not affect average daily gain (ADG) (p = 0.634), average daily feed intake (ADFI) (p = 0.655), and gain:feed (p = 0.814) prior to LPS challenge. After LPS challenge, for LPS-challenged pigs those fed ASPS had higher ADG and ADFI than the non-supplemented group (p<0.05), and an interaction between $LPS{\times}ASPS$ was observed on the two indices (p<0.05). Dietary ASPS improved lymphocyte proliferation among saline-injected and LPS-injected pigs (p<0.05). Interaction between $LPS{\times}ASPS$ was also revealed on lymphocyte proliferation (p<0.05). Circulatory concentration of IgG was influenced neither by ASPS (p = 0.803) or LPS (p = 0.692), nor their interaction (p = 0.289). Plasma concentration and spleen mRNA expression of interleukin-1beta (IL-$1{\beta}$), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$ were induced to increase (p<0.05) by LPS challenge, in contrast, these indices were decreased by dietary ASPS (p<0.05), and interactions were found on these cytokines (p<0.05). For LPS-challenged pigs, dietary ASPS also reduced the circulating concentration and spleen mRNA expression of IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6 as well as TNF-${\alpha}$ (p<0.05). The interaction between $LPS{\times}ASPS$ was also observed on the circulating concentration of insulin-like growth factor-I, ${\alpha}$-acid glycoprotein (${\alpha}$-AGP), nonesterified fatty acid, and glucose (p<0.05). The results of this study demonstrate that dietary ASPS can modulate the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines during immunological challenge, which might enable piglets to achieve better growth performance.

Background: To explore mRNA expression and clinical significance of ERCC1, BRCA1, RRM1, TYMS and TUBB3 genes in tumor tissue of postoperative patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Materials and Methods: Sixty NSCLC patients undergoing radical operation in our hospital from Nov., 2011 to Jun., 2012 were selected. Plasmid standards of ERCC1, BRCA1, RRM1, TYMS and TUBB3 were established and standard curves were prepared by SYBR fluorescent real-time quantitative PCR analysis. Samples from tumor centers were taken to detect mRNA expression of ERCC1, BRCA1, RRM1, TYMS and TUBB3 genes in cancerous tissue during operation. The total mRNA expression quantities were compared according to different clinical characteristics. Results: The total expression quantities of 5 genotypes from high to low were ERCC1>RRM1>TUBB3>TYMS>BRCA1 in turn. By pairwise comparisons, other differences showed statistical significance (p<0.05 or p<0.01) except for TYMS and TUBB3 (p>0.05); the low expression rates from high to low were ERCC1>TYMS>TUBB3>TUBB3>RRM1>BRCA1 in turn. The expression quantities of BRCA1, RRM1 and TYMS in males, smokers and patients without adenocarcinoma were all significantly higher than that in females, non-smokers and patients with adenocarcinoma, and significant differences were present (p<0.05 or p<0.01). In terms of pathological staging, the expression quantities of BRCA1, RRM1 and TYMS in phases IIa~IIb and IIIa~IIIb had a tendency to be greater than in phases I and IV. Conclusions: Resistance to chemotherapy and sensitivity to targeted therapy differ among patients with NSCLC. Differences in gene expression in different individuals were also revealed. Only according to personalized detection results can individualized therapeutic regimens be worked out, which is a new direction for oncotherapy.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that is common among the middle-aged and older populations, causes patients to experience recurrent pain in their joints and negatively affects their quality of life. Currently, therapeutic options for patients with OA consist of medications to alleviate pain and treat the symptoms; however, due to typically poor outcomes, patients with advanced OA are unlikely to avoid joint replacement. In recent years, several studies have linked disrupted homeostasis of the joint cavity microenvironment to the development of OA. Recently, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have received increasing attention in the field of OA. EVs are natural nano-microcarrier materials with unique biological activity that are produced by cells through paracrine action. They are composed of lipid bilayers that contain physiologically active molecules, such as nucleic acids and proteins. Moreover, EVs may participate in local and distal intercellular and intracellular communication. EVs have also recently been shown to influence OA development by regulating biochemical factors in the OA microenvironmental. In this article, we first describe the microenvironment of OA. Then, we provide an overview of EVs, summarize the main types used for the treatment of OA, and describe their mechanisms. Next, we review clinical studies using EVs for OA treatment. Finally, the specific mechanism underlying the application of miRNA-enriched EVs in OA therapy is described.
Scheduling Performance Analysis on Parameter Sweep Applications in Cloud Environments

Recently, cloud computing has becoming a promising networking infrastructure paradigm which enable us to deploy large-scale applications in a cost-effective manner. However, many existing cloud platforms are designed for supporting commercial applications instead of large-scale scientific computing workloads. As a result, the effectiveness of running such kind of applications on cloud platforms is still an opening issue, especially when the performance penalties introduced by virtualization technology is taken into consideration. In this work, we take effects on analyzing the scheduling performance of cloud platforms for Parameter Sweep Applications (PSA), which is one of most used program models in large-scale scientific computing applications. All the experiments are conducted on our integrated performance evaluation middleware. The experimental results indicate that many conventional scheduling algorithms which are effective in classic distributed systems (i.e. grid, cluster) need to take into account the negative effects introduced by virtualization technology. In addition, the experimental results also indicate some useful hints for improving the scheduling performance of PSA workloads in cloud environments.

Most available methods of facial gender recognition work well under a constrained situation, but the performances of these methods have decreased significantly when they are implemented under unconstrained environments. In this paper, a method via low-rank and collaborative representation is proposed for facial gender recognition in the wild. Firstly, the low-rank decomposition is applied to the face image to minimize the negative effect caused by various corruptions and dynamical illuminations in an unconstrained environment. And, we employ the collaborative representation to be as the classifier, which using the much weaker l2-norm sparsity constraint to achieve similar classification results but with significantly lower complexity. The proposed method combines the low-rank and collaborative representation to an organic whole to solve the task of facial gender recognition under unconstrained environments. Extensive experiments on three benchmarks including AR, CAS-PERL and YouTube are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms, our method has overwhelming superiority in the aspects of accuracy and robustness.
Constraining top partner and naturalness at the LHC and TLEP

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We investigate indirect constraints on the top partner within the minimal fermionic top partner model. By performing a global fit of the latest Higgs data, <SUB> B s </SUB> → <SUP> μ + </SUP> <SUP> μ − </SUP> measurements and the electroweak precision observables we find that the top partner with the mass up to 830 GeV is excluded at 2<I>σ</I> level. Our bound on the top partner mass is much stronger than the bounds obtained from the direct searches at the LHC. Under the current constraints the fine-tuning measure is less than 9% and the branching ratio of T → t Z is bounded between 14% and 25%. We also find that precise measurements of Higgs couplings at 240 GeV TLEP will constrain the top partner mass in multi-TeV region.</P>
