Modeling the polypropylene fiber effect on compressive strength of self-compacting concrete

Mehdi Nazarpour,Ali Foroughi Asl 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2016 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.17 No.3

Although the self-compacting concrete (SCC) offers several practical and economic benefits and quality improvement in concrete constructions, in comparison with conventionally vibrated concretes confronts with autogenously chemical and drying shrinkage which causes the formation of different cracks and creates different problems in concrete structures. Using different fibers in the mix design and implementation of fibrous concrete, the problem can be solved by connecting cracks and micro cracks together and postponing the propagation of them. In this study an experimental investigation using response surface methodology (RSM) based on full factorial design has been undertaken in order to model and evaluate the polypropylene fiber effect on the fibrous self-compacting concrete and curing time, fiber percentage and fiber amount have been considered as input variables. Compressive strength has been measured and calculated as the output response to achieve a mathematical relationship between input variables. To evaluate the proposed model analysis of variance at a confidence level of 95% has been applied and finally optimum compressive strength predicted. After analyzing the data, it was found that the presented mathematical model is in very good agreement with experimental results. The overall results of the experiments confirm the validity of the proposed model and this model can be used to predict the compressive strength of fibrous self-compacting concrete.

Voltage Quality Improvement with Neural Network-Based Interline Dynamic Voltage Restorer

Aali, Seyedreza,Nazarpour, Daryoush The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2011 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.6 No.6

Custom power devices such as dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) and DSTATCOM are used to improve the power quality in distribution systems. These devices require real power to compensate the deep voltage sag during sufficient time. An interline DVR (IDVR) consists of several DVRs in different feeders. In this paper, a neural network is proposed to control the IDVR performance to achieve optimal mitigation of voltage sags, swell, and unbalance, as well as improvement of dynamic performance. Three multilayer perceptron neural networks are used to identify and regulate the dynamics of the voltage on sensitive load. A backpropagation algorithm trains this type of network. The proposed controller provides optimal mitigation of voltage dynamic. Simulation is carried out by MATLAB/Simulink, demonstrating that the proposed controller has fast response with lower total harmonic distortion.

      • Multidimensional Modeling of Physiological Tremor for Active Compensation in Handheld Surgical Robotics

        Tatinati, Sivanagaraja,Nazarpour, Kianoush,Ang, Wei Tech,Veluvolu, Kalyana C. IEEE 2017 IEEE transactions on industrial electronics Vol.64 No.2

Precision, robustness, dexterity, and intelligence are the design indices for current generation surgical robotics. To augment the required precision and dexterity into normal microsurgical work-flow, handheld robotic instruments are developed to compensate physiological tremor in real time. The hardware (sensors and actuators) and software (causal linear filters) employed for tremor identification and filtering introduces time-varying unknown phase delay that adversely affects the device performance. The current techniques that focus on three-dimensions (3-D) tip position control involves modeling and canceling the tremor in three axes (x-, y-, and z-axes) separately. Our analysis with the tremor recorded from surgeons and novice subjects shows that there exists significant correlation in tremor across the dimensions. Based on this, a new multidimensional modeling approach based on extreme learning machines is proposed in this paper to correct the phase delay and to accurately model 3-D tremor simultaneously. Proposed method is evaluated through both simulations and experiments. Comparison with the state-of-the art techniques highlight the suitability and better performance of the proposed approach for tremor compensation in handheld surgical robotics.

An Optimal Procedure for Sizing and Siting of DGs and Smart Meters in Active Distribution Networks Considering Loss Reduction

Sattarpour, T.,Nazarpour, D.,Golshannavaz, S.,Siano, P. The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2015 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.10 No.3

The presence of responsive loads in the promising active distribution networks (ADNs) would definitely affect the power system problems such as distributed generations (DGs) studies. Hence, an optimal procedure is proposed herein which takes into account the simultaneous placement of DGs and smart meters (SMs) in ADNs. SMs are taken into consideration for the sake of successful implementing of demand response programs (DRPs) such as direct load control (DLC) with end-side consumers. Seeking to power loss minimization, the optimization procedure is tackled with genetic algorithm (GA) and tested thoroughly on 69-bus distribution test system. Different scenarios including variations in the number of DG units, adaptive power factor (APF) mode for DGs to support reactive power, and individual or simultaneous placing of DGs and SMs have been established and interrogated in depth. The obtained results certify the considerable effect of DRPs and APF mode in determining the optimal size and site of DGs to be connected in ADN resulting to the lowest value of power losses as well.

UPFC Performance Control in Distribution Networks for DG Sources in the Islanding

Fandawi, Ahmed,Nazarpour, Daryoosh The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic 2017 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.18 No.5

The flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) provides a new advanced technology solution to improve the flexibility, controllability, and stability of a power system. The unified power flow controller (UPFC) is outstanding for regulating power flow in the FACTS; it can control the real power, reactive power, and node voltage of distribution networks. This paper investigates the performance of the UPFC for power flow control with a series of step changes in rapid succession in a power system steady state and the response of the UPFC to distribution network faults and islanding mode. Simulation was carried out using the MATLAB's simulink sim power systems toolbox. The results, which were carried out on a 5-bus test system and a 4-bus multi-machine electric power system, show clearly the effectiveness and viability of UPFC in rapid response and independent control of the real and reactive power flows and oscillation damping [6].

A New Design for Cascaded Multilevel Inverters with Reduced Part Counts

Choupan, Reza,Nazarpour, Daryoush,Golshannavaz, Sajjad The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic 2017 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.18 No.4

This paper deals with the design and implementation of an efficient topology for cascaded multilevel inverters with reduced part counts. In the proposed design, a well-established basic unit is first developed. The series extension of this unit results in the formation of the proposed multilevel inverter. The proposed design minimizes the number of power electronic components including insulated-gate bipolar transistors and gate driver circuits, which in turn cuts down the size of the inverter assembly and reduces the operating power losses. An explicit control strategy with enhanced device efficiency is also acquired. Thus, the part count reductions enhance not only the economical merits but also the technical features of the entire system. In order to accomplish the desired operational aspects, three algorithms are considered to determine the magnitudes of the dc voltage sources effectively. The proposed topology is compared with the conventional cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter topology, to reflect the merits of the presented structure. In continue, both the analytical and experimental results of a cascaded 31-level structure are analyzed. The obtained results are discussed in depth, and the exemplary performance of the proposed structure is corroborated.

Design of an Asymmetrical Three-phase Inverter for Load Balancing and Power Factor Correction Based on Power Analysis

Mokhtari, M.,Golshannavaz, S.,Nazarpour, D.,Aminifar, F. The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2011 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.6 No.3

This paper presents a novel theoretical method based on power analysis to obtain voltage reference values for an inverter-based compensator. This type of compensator, which is installed in parallel with the load, is usually referred to as the active filter. The proposed method is tailored to design the compensator in such a way that it can simultaneously balance the asymmetric load, as well as correct the power factor of the supply side. For clarity, a static compensator is first considered and a recursive algorithm is utilized to calculate the reactance values. The algorithm is then extended to calculate voltage reference values when the compensator is inverter based. It is evident that the compensator would be asymmetric since the load is unbalanced. The salient feature associated with the proposed method is that the circuit representation of system load is not required and that the load is recognized just by its active and reactive consumptions. Hence, the type and connection of load do not matter. The validity and performance of the new approach are analyzed via a numerical example, and the obtained results are thoroughly discussed.
