Movies for EFL Language, Content and Literature Classes: Showcasing The Devil Wears P rada
Cynthia Daugherty,Chiharu Nakashima,Reiko Akiyoshi 영상영어교육학회 2010 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.11 No.1
This paper describes three ways of using a movie in university-level English as a foreign language classes for the teaching of content, language and literature. The movie The Devil Wears Prada is used to demonstrate each approach. First, the paper shows how the movie can serve as material for sustained-content language teaching. This section suggests a theme and the content for the course, including an academic-style lecture. It also recommends language and skill focuses that will enable students to address the theme in a critical way. Second, the paper describes a way of using high-speed movie dialogues for beginning and intermediate listening and speaking classes. In this method, the students are creatively involved in the scene and can lose themselves in repetitive practice of the lines for the development of fluency and automaticity. Third, the paper looks at how the movie can be used to develop students' appreciation of novels, particularly the narrative aspect. The movie is paired with Theodore Dreiser's novel, Sister Carrie because of key similarities between the main characters and their circumstances. Students engage with the characters through the activities of writing stage directions and internal monologues.

A novel species, Metschnikowia cibodasensis, is proposed to accommodate eight strains (ID03- 0093T, ID03-0094, ID03-0095, ID03-0096, ID03-0097, ID03-0098, ID03-0099, and ID03-0109) isolated from flowers of Saurauia pendula, Berberis nepalensis, and Brunfelsia americana in Cibodas Botanical Garden, West Java, Indonesia. The type strain of M. cibodasensis is ID03- 0093T (= NBRC 101693T =UICC Y-335T = BTCC-Y25T). The common features of M. cibodasensis are a spherical to ellipsoidopedunculate shaped ascus, which contains one or two needleshaped ascospores, and lyse at maturity. Asci generally develop directly from vegetative cells but sometimes from chlamydospores. The neighbor-joining tree based on the D1/D2 domain of nuclear large subunit (nLSU) ribosomal DNA sequences strongly supports that M. cibodasensis (eight strains) and its closest teleomorphic species, M. reukaufii, are different species by a 100% bootstrap value. The type strain of M. cibodasensis, ID03-0093T, differed from M. reukaufii NBRC 1679T by six nt (five substitutions and one deletion) in their D1/D2 region of nLSU rDNA, and by 18 nt (five deletions, four insertions, and nine substitutions) in their internal transcribed spacer regions of rDNA, respectively. Four strains representative of M. cibodasensis (ID03-0093T, ID03-0095, ID03-0096, and ID03-0099) showed a mol% G+C content of 44.05 ± 0.25%, whereas that of M. reukaufii NBRC 1679T was 41.3%. The low value of DNADNA homology (5-16%) in four strains of M. cibodasensis and M. reukaufii NBRC 1679T strongly supported that these strains represent a distinct species.
Re-Examination of Several Elsinoë Species Reported from Japan
Ujat Anysia Hedy,Ono Tsuyoshi,Hattori Yukako,Nakashima Chiharu 한국균학회 2023 Mycobiology Vol.51 No.3
Elsinoё are plant pathogenic fungi that cause scabs, spotted anthracnose, and some morphological distortions on various plants, including woody plants, economically important crops, and ornamental plants. Taxonomical reexamination of Elsinoё species in Japan has not yet been conducted based on the modern species criteria. In this study, several Japanese isolates were reexamine based on the morphological and molecular-phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), large subunit gene (LSU)m and protein-coding gene such as RNA polymerase II subunit (rpb2) and Translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef). Japanese isolates were divided into four clades and three new species, Elsinoё hydrangeae, E. sumire, and E. tanashiensis were proposed. One species, Sphaceloma akebiae, was transferred to the genus Elsinoё.
Taxonomical Study of Noteworthy Species of Botryosphaeria in Japan
( Yukako Hattori ),( Yuho Ando ),( Atsuko Sasaki ),( Nami Uechi ),( Chiharu Nakashima ) 한국균학회 2021 Mycobiology Vol.49 No.2
The reexamination of the fungal genus Botryosphaeria on 12 plant species of 10 families was carried out based on molecular phylogenetic analyses using the regions of translation elongation factor 1- α, β-tubulin, DNA-directed RNA polymerase II subunit, and internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA and morphological characteristics. Japanese isolates were divided into five clades and include Botryosphaeria dothidea, B. qingyuanensis, B. sinensis, and Botryosphaeria spp. Two species, B. qingyuanensis and B. sinensis have been newly added to the Japanese mycoflora, but their host plants are not specified. Botryosphaeria tenuispora isolated from Leucothoe fontanesiana and insect galls on fruits of Aucuba japonica has been proposed as a new species.
