Microwave Determination of Moisture
Nham, H.S.,Choi, B.I.,Chi,D.,Park, C.B.,Park, N.S.,Kim, M.W. 경북대학교 센서기술연구소 1991 센서技術學術大會論文集 Vol.2 No.1
We have developed a microwave method of moisture determination of several materials in free space. A bridge technique at the frequency of 9.5 GHz has been employed to determine the moisture content of building sand, pine wood etc.. It can be modified for continuous and non-destructive measurement of moisture contents of non-metallic materials such as coal, pulp, foods, building materials and so on. The possibility of developing moisture profile measurement system (i.e, microwave imaging technique) will be examined.

We analyzed the clinical significance of pre-transplant International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) score and comorbidity in 68 patients who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) (n=48) or acute myeloid leukemia evolved from MDS (n=20) between December 1995 and January 2008 in a single institute. During a median follow-up period of 41.0 months (range, 3.2–132.0 months), 27 patients died, and 7 relapsed. The 5-year probabilities of overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) were 60.0 and 57.4%, respectively, and the 5-year cumulative incidences of non-relapse mortality (CINRM) and relapse were 32.7 and 9.9%, respectively. OS, EFS, and CINRM were significantly different according to pre-transplant IPSS score and presence of pre-transplant comorbidity, which were independent risk factors along with Karnofsky performance score in multivariate analyses. In conclusion, pre-transplant IPSS score and comorbidity may stratify the risk of post transplant outcomes in MDS.
Metal-Insulator Transition Induced by Short Range Magnetic Ordering in Mono-layered Manganite
Chi, E.O.,Kim, W.S.,Hong, C.S.,Hur, N.H.,Choi, Y.N. Korean Chemical Society 2003 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.24 No.5
The structural, magnetic, and transport properties of a mono-layered manganite $La_{0.7}Sr_{1.3}MnO_{4+{\delta}}$ were investigated using variable temperature neutron powder diffraction as well as magnetization and transport measurements. The compound adopts the tetragonal I4/mmm symmetry and exhibits no magnetic reflection in the temperature region of 10 K ≤ T ≤ 300 K. A weak ferromagnetic (FM) transition occurs about 130 K, which almost coincides with the onset of a metal-insulator (M-I) transition. Extra oxygen that occupies the interstitial site between the [(La,Sr)O] layers makes the spacing between the [MnO₂] layers shorten, which enhances the inter-layer coupling and eventually leads to the M-I transition. We also found negative magneto resistance (MR) below the M-I transition temperature, which can be understood on the basis of the percolative transport via FM metallic domains in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating matrix.

1. On body fluid cytologic examination, routine stains for Pap, Giemsa and PAS are ideal. 2. Giemsa stain is very useful for differential diagnosis of reactive mesothelial cell hyperplasia and malignant lymphoma. 3. Adenocarcinomas are positively reactive in 63% of all subtypes on P.A.S. stains. They reveal a mass shape in adenocarcinoma rather than granules, characteristics of mesothelial cells. 4. Without P AS stain well differentiated adenocarcinomas are very difficult to make the diagnosis, when the cancer cell appears individually. 5. Hyperoxidation or incomplete removal of leucofuchsin may result false positivity on P.A.S.
TRIM72 negatively regulates myogenesis via targeting insulin receptor substrate-1
Lee, C S,Yi, J-S,Jung, S-Y,Kim, B-W,Lee, N-R,Choo, H-J,Jang, S-Y,Han, J,Chi, S-G,Park, M,Lee, J-H,Ko, Y-G Macmillan Publishers Limited 2010 CELL DEATH AND DIFFERENTIATION Vol.17 No.8
Lipid rafts have been known to be platforms to initiate cellular signal transduction of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) inducing skeletal muscle differentiation and hypertrophy. Here, tripartite motif 72 (TRIM72), with a really interesting new gene (RING)-finger domain, a B-box, two coiled-coil domains, and a SPRY (SPla and RYanodine receptor) domain, was revealed to be predominantly expressed in the sarcolemma lipid rafts of skeletal and cardiac muscles. Adenoviral TRIM72 overexpression prevented but RNAi-mediated TRIM72 silencing enhanced C2C12 myogenesis by modulating the IGF-induced insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) activation through the molecular association of TRIM72 with IRS-1. Furthermore, myogenic activity was highly enhanced with increased IGF-induced Akt activation in the satellite cells of TRIM72−/− mice, compared to those of TRIM72+/+ mice. Because TRIM72 promoter analysis shows that two proximal E-boxes in TRIM72 promoter were essential for MyoD- and Akt-dependent TRIM72 transcription, we can conclude that TRIM72 is a novel antagonist of IRS-1, and is essential as a negative regulator of IGF-induced muscle differentiation.

ZNF313 encoding a zinc-binding protein is located at chromosome 20q13.13, which exhibits a frequent genomic amplification in multiple human cancers. However, the biological function of ZNF313 remains largely undefined. Here we report that ZNF313 is an ubiquitin E3 ligase that has a critical role in the regulation of cell cycle progression, differentiation and senescence. In this study, ZNF313 is initially identified as a XIAP-associated factor 1 (XAF1)-interacting protein, which upregulates the stability and proapoptotic effect of XAF1. Intriguingly, we found that ZNF313 activates cell cycle progression and suppresses cellular senescence through the RING domain-mediated degradation of p21WAF1. ZNF313 ubiquitinates p21WAF1 and also destabilizes p27KIP1 and p57KIP2, three members of the CDK-interacting protein (CIP)/kinase inhibitor protein (KIP) family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, whereas it does not affect the stability of the inhibitor of CDK (INK4) family members, such as p16INK4A and p15INK4B. ZNF313 expression is tightly controlled during the cell cycle and its elevation at the late G1 phase is crucial for the G1-to-S phase transition. ZNF313 is induced by mitogenic growth factors and its blockade profoundly delays cell cycle progression and accelerates p21WAF1-mediated senescence. Both replicative and stress-induced senescence are accompanied with ZNF313 reduction. ZNF313 is downregulated during cellular differentiation process in vitro and in vivo, while it is commonly upregulated in many types of cancer cells. ZNF313 shows both the nuclear and cytoplasmic localization in epithelial cells of normal tissues, but exhibits an intense cytoplasmic distribution in carcinoma cells of tumor tissues. Collectively, ZNF313 is a novel E3 ligase for p21WAF1, whose alteration might be implicated in the pathogenesis of several human diseases, including cancers.

Carbon nanotube emitters, prepared by screen printing, have demonstrated a great potential towards low-cost, largearea field emission displays. Carbon nanotube paste, essential to the screen printing technology, was formulated to exhibit low threshold electric fields as well as an emission uniformity over a large area. Two different types of triode structures, normal gate and undergate, have been investigated, leading us to the optimal structure designing. These carbon nanotube FEDs demonstrated color separation and high brightness over 300 $cd/m^2$ at a video-speed operation of moving images. Our recent developments are discussed in details.
