Response of Wheat Growth and Productivity to Exogenous Polyamines under Lead Stress

Mostafa M Rady,Mohamed A Seif El-Yazal,Hanan AA Taie,Safia MA Ahmed 한국작물학회 2016 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.19 No.5

Polyamines [i.e. spermine (Spm), spermidine (Spd) and putrescine (Put)] antagonistic effects on stress imposed by 2.0 mM lead (Pb 2+ ) on growth, yield and its components and changes in the osmoprotectant and endogenous Pb 2+ concentrations, the contents of some nutrients and tissue health in wheat plants were evaluated. Under the three applied polyamine (PAs) applications, the efficiency of wheat plants to tolerate Pb 2+ stress in terms of growth and yield characteristics was noticed to varying degrees. The enhancements in osmoprotectant concentrations and plant health [in terms of relative water content (RWC) and membrane stability index (MSI)], and reductions in electrolyte leakage (EL) and plant Pb 2+ concentration were correlated with the reasonable growth of Pb 2+ -stressed plants and their grain yield. Results point out that, better growth and yield characteristics, MSI, RWC, leaf photosynthetic pigment and osmoprotectant concentrations, and nutrient contents were obtained with seed soaking in 0.25 mM Spm, 0.50 mM Spd or 1.0 mM Put than those generated with seed soaking in water under 2.0 mM Pb 2+ stress. In contrast, EL and the concentration of endogenous Pb 2+ were significantly reduced. However, the Pb 2+ -free control positively exceeded the all stressed treatments. Among all tested PAs, 1.0 mM Put showed the best results and thus is recommended, as seed soaking, for wheat to grow well under Pb 2+ stress.

Hemodynamic effects of norepinephrine versus phenylephrine infusion for prophylaxis against spinal anesthesia-induced hypotension in the elderly population undergoing hip fracture surgery: a randomized controlled trial

        Mostafa Maha,Hasanin Ahmed,Mostafa Mahmoud,Taha Mai Y,Elsayad Mohamed,Haggag Fatma Alzahraa,Taalab Omar,Rady Ashraf,Abdelhamid Bassant 대한마취통증의학회 2021 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology Vol.74 No.4

Background: Elderly population are at increased risk of spinal anesthesia-induced hypotension increasing their risk for postoperative morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to compare the hemodynamic effects of prophylactic infusion of norepinephrine (NE) versus phenylephrine (PE) in elderly patients undergoing hip fracture surgery under spinal anesthesia. Methods: Elderly patients scheduled for hip fracture surgery were randomized to receive either NE infusion (8 µg/min) (NE group, n = 31) or PE infusion (100 µg/min) (PE group, n = 31) after spinal anesthesia. Outcomes included mean heart rate, mean blood pressure, cardiac output, incidence of spinal anesthesia-induced hypotension, incidence of bradycardia, and incidence of hypertension. Results: Sixty-two patients with a mean age of 71 ± 6 years were included in the final analysis (31 patients in each group). The NE group showed a higher mean heart rate and cardiac output than the PE group. The NE group had a lower incidence of reactive bradycardia (10% vs. 36%, P = 0.03) and hypertension (3% vs. 36%, P = 0.003) than the PE group. No study participant developed hypotension, and the mean blood pressure was comparable between the two groups. Conclusions: Both NE and PE infusions effectively prevented spinal anesthesia-induced hypotension in elderly patients undergoing hip fracture surgery. However, NE provided more hemodynamic stability than PE; maintaining the heart rate, higher cardiac output, less reactive bradycardia, and hypertension.

Exogenous Calcium Supplementation Improves Salinity Tolerance in BRRI Dhan28; a Salt-Susceptible High-Yielding Oryza Sativa Cultivar

        Tahjib-Ul-Arif,Popy Rani Roy,Abdullah Al Mamun Sohag,Sonya Afrin,Mostafa M Rady,M. Afzal Hossain 한국작물학회 2018 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.21 No.4

Salinity is one of the most brutal abiotic stressors, commencing a great stumbling block in the way of attaining food security in Bangladesh. Cultivation of rice in saline soils can be possible after enhancing its salt tolerance. This study aimed to examine the potential impact of exogenous calcium (3 and 5 mM Ca2+ in CaCl2) on conferring salt tolerance in rice (cv. BRRI dhan28). At the germination stage, Ca2+-primed seeds were grown under 100 mM NaCl stress conditions for nine days. At the seedling stage, rice seedlings were grown in a sandponic culture with Hoagland′s nutrient solution amended or not amended with 100 mM NaCl for 20 days with or without Ca2+ supplementation. Our results revealed that NaCl-stressed rice plants showed highly compromised germination indices and growth parameters, which could be attributed to reduced shoot and root growth, decreased photosynthetic pigments, increased H2O2 accumulation, and elevated levels of lipid peroxidation measured as malondialdehyde (MDA). On the other hand, exogenous Ca2+ application noticeably improved germination indices, growth and biomass-related parameters under salt stress. Ca2+-treated salt-stressed plants displayed amplified chlorophyll content, as well as suppressed the accumulation of H2O2, contributing to oxidative damage protection. Ca2+ supplementation for salt-stressed rice seedlings elevated relative water content without increasing excess proline, indicating the role of Ca2+ in maintaining water balance under stressful conditions. Furthermore, exogenous Ca2+ decreased membrane injury under NaCl stress, as mirrored by notably diminished levels of MDA in stressed seedlings. The defensive role of Ca2+ counter to oxidative stress was connected with the elevated activities of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and peroxidase. In general, the best results in terms of growth at both germination and seedling stages were obtained in response to 3 mM Ca2+ treatment. Finally, Ca2+ supplementation can be an effective practice to cultivate rice in saline soils.
