Determination of normative reference for the definition of sarcopenia among Filipinos
Michael L. Tee,Cherica A. Tee,Elizabeth B. Montemayor 대한골다공증학회 2016 Osteoporosis and Sarcopenia Vol.2 No.3
Background: At present, there is no normative value that can be used in the definition of sarcopenia in the Philippines. Objective: We identified the reference cut-off values for: 1) muscle mass using bioimpedance analysis; 2) grip strength; 3) usual gait speed; 4) timed get-up-and-go; and 5) short physical performance battery in the Philippines in order to adapt the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) criteria for the definition of sarcopenia. Methods: Two hundred seventy six (135 males and 141 females) healthy Filipino adults, between 20 and 40 years, were included in this cross sectional study. A Fresenius Body Composition Monitor was used to measure lean tissue mass (LTM) and lean tissue index (LTI). A dynamometer was used to measure grip strength. Usual gait speed, timed get-up-and-go, and short physical performance battery were also determined. Result: The normative references for males and females, respectively, for LTI were 17.10 þ 2.337 kg/m2 and 12.63 þ 2.119 kg/m2; for usual gait speed were 1.06 þ 0.251 m/sec and 0.930 þ 0.144 m/sec; and for grip strength were 39.76 þ 7.567 kg and 26.68 þ 5.243 kg. The sarcopenia cut-points for the males and females, respectively, for LTI were <12.50 kg/m2 and <8.33 kg/m2; for usual gait speed were <0.55 m/sec and <0.65 m/sec; and for grip strength were <24.54 kg and <16.10 kg. Conclusion: This study presents cut-points for the determination of sarcopenia at-risk population among Filipinos.

This research reports the synthesis, characterization, and electrical properties of the systems EryCe1−yO2−δ (y = 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15), and the effect of the incorporation of sintering aids (2 wt.% of CaO, MgO, and TiO2) on the electrical properties of the composition Er0.1Ce0.9O1.95, to be used as ceramic solid electrolytes in low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFC). All EryCe1−yO2−δ samples were obtained by mechanochemistry (20 h of milling) and characterized by XRD. The morphology of the pure sintered compositions and with the incorporation of sintering aids (sintered at 1200 °C) was evaluated by FE-SEM. Electrical properties as a function of temperature (200–650 °C) and frequency (100 Hz–1 MHz) were evaluated by impedance spectroscopy. It reveals an increase of bulk ionic conductivity for higher contents of Er, as the number of oxygen vacancies increases. The higher value of conductivity (6.7 × 10–3 S cm−1) at 650 °C was for the composition Er0.15Ce0.85O1.925, while the ionic conductivity of Er0.1Ce0.9O1.95 at 650 °C increased from 2.68 × 10–3 S cm−1 to a maximum of 1.54 × 10–2 S cm−1 with the incorporation of CaO as additive. These improvements in bulk ionic conductivities can contribute to the development of more efficient electrolytes for the LT-SOFC technology.
Assessing the Economic Benefits of Investment in Capacity Building
Normito R. Zapata Jr.,Bates M. Bathan,Nohreen Ethel P. Manipol,Garry Jay S.Montemayor The International Academy of Global Business and T 2016 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.12 No.1
This paper presented the results of an economic assessment study commissioned by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (PCAARRD-DOST). Primary data on production, costs, investments, and socio-economic and farm-specific characteristics were obtained from 382 goat enterprise owners from Leyte, La Union, Isabela, and Nueva Ecija, Philippines using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. The analytical method used to measure the return on the donor’s investment is the Benefit-Cost-Analysis (BCA). The study showed that the investment on capacity building generated a Net Present Value (NPV) of Php 3.8 million, a Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) of 1.36 and an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 35.48%. It is therefore concluded that the Rural Enterprise Development (RED) project provided positive returns on the investments of PCAARRD and the participating Local Government Units (LGUs). Hence, it was recommended that the Department of Agriculture institutionalize the RED Project so that it could be replicated in other regions of the country.
Clinical features of Senior-Loken syndrome with IQCB1/NPHP5 mutation in a Filipino man

The Senior-Loken syndrome was first described in 1961 as an oculo-renal disease consisting of familial juvenile nephro-nophthisis and Leber congenital amaurosis. It is a rare autosomal recessive disorder with a prevalence of 1:1,000,000 caused by mutations in nine genes (NPHP 1-8 and NPHP 10). Ocular manifestations (e.g., photophobia, nystagmus, and extreme hyperopia) occur within the ἀrst few years of life while renal manifestations (e.g., formation of multiple cysts impairing kid-ney function and end-stage renal disease) appear in late childhood to adolescence. Here, we report a case of a Filipino male presenting with rotatory nystagmus and progressive deterioration of vision since childhood. He had congenital amaurosis and juvenile nephronophthisis that progressed to end stage renal disease by age 19. All laboratory and imaging ἀndings were consistent with chronic kidney disease. Molecular genetic testing of ciliopathy-related genes was performed revealing a ho-mozygous mutation in exon 11 of the IQCB1/NPHP5 gene, c.1090C>T (p.Arg364*). This sequence change created a prema-ture translational stop signal resulting in a truncated protein product, nephrocystin-5 and its consequent loss of function. His symptoms eventually improved with initiation dialysis. The prognosis of Senior-Loken syndrome remains dismal and a high index of suspicion, early diagnosis and timely intervention of renal complications are warranted.
