Multi-responsive poly(N-isoprpylacrlamide-methacrylic acid-acrylamide) [P(NIPAM-MAA-AAm)] copolymer microgel was prepared by free radical emulsion polymerization. Silver nanoparticles were fabricated inside the microgel network by in-situ reduction of silver nitrate. Swelling and deswelling behavior of the pure microgels was studied under various conditions of pH and temperature using dynamic light scattering. A red shift was observed in surface plasmon resonance wavelength of Ag nanoparticles with pH induced swelling of hybrid microgel. The catalytic activity of the hybrid system was investigated by monitoring the reduction of p-nitrophenol under different conditions of temperature and amount of catalysts. For this catalytic reaction a time delay of 8 to 10min was observed at room temperature, which was reduced to 2 min at high temperature due to swelling of microgels, which facilitated diffusion of reactants to catalyst surface and increased rate of reaction.

A mechanism showing different modes of interaction of benzalkonium chloride and cetrimide with the stationary and mobile phase has been proposed which leads to the separation of this surfactant mixture. Other combination of cationic surfactants was also separated from their binary mixture by the chromatographic system comprising of silica gel and combination of green solvents as mobile phase. The effect of presence of impurities on separation process was also examined and the limits of detection of the separated surfactants were calculated. The developed method was also successfully applied for the identification of cetrimide and benzalkonium chloride in pharmaceutical formulations.

Background/Aims: To analyze the incidence of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) sepsis in the early (Julyto September) and later (October to June) academic months to assess the “July effect”. Methods: The National Inpatient Sample (2010–2014) was used to identify ERCP-related adult hospitalizations at urban teachinghospitals by applying relevant procedure codes from the International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision, Clinical Modification. Post-ERCP outcomes were compared between the early and later academic months. A multivariate analysis was performed to evaluatethe odds of post-ERCP sepsis and its predictors. Results: Of 481,193 ERCP procedures carried out at urban teaching hospitals, 124,934 were performed during the early academicmonths. The demographics were comparable for ERCP procedures performed during the early and later academic months. A higherincidence (9.4% vs. 8.8%, p<0.001) and odds (odds ratio [OR], 1.07) of post-ERCP sepsis were observed in ERCP performed during theearly academic months. The in-hospital mortality rate (7% vs. 7.5%, p=0.072), length of stay, and total hospital charges in patients withpost-ERCP sepsis were also equivalent between the 2 time points. Pre-ERCP cholangitis (OR, 3.20) and post-ERCP complications suchas cholangitis (OR, 6.27), perforation (OR, 3.93), and hemorrhage (OR, 1.42) were significant predictors of higher post-ERCP sepsis inprocedures performed during the early academic months. Conclusions: The July effect was present in the incidence of post-ERCP sepsis, and academic programs should take into considerationthe predictors of post-ERCP sepsis to lower health-care burden.

We investigated the effect of crosslinking density of poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) micro-gels on catalytic activity of silver nanoparticles fabricated hybrid microgels. Multiresponsive poly(N-isopropyl acryla-mide-co-acrylic acid) microgels with 2, 4, 6 and 8 mole percentage of N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide were synthesizedby emulsion polymerization. These microgels were characterized by dynamic light scattering and were used as mi-croreactors to synthesize silver nanoparticles. Hybrid system was characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Thecatalytic activity of hybrid microgels with different crosslinker content was compared by studying the reduction of p-nitrophenol as a model reaction. Kinetics of reaction was monitored by spectrophotometry. The value of the apparentrate constant decreases from 0.568 to 0.313 min−1, when content of crosslinker are increased from 2 to 8 mole percent-age respectively. This decreases in value of apparent rate constant is due to increase in diffusional barrier offered byhigh crosslinking of polymer network at high mole percentages of N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide.
