A set of (E)-N′-chlorobenzylidene-benzenesulfonohydrazide (CBBSH) molecules were synthesized using a condensation method from the derivatives of chlorobenzaldehyde and benzenesulfonylhydrazine in a medium yield which crystallized in EtOH. CBBSH derivatives were characterized using highly refined spectroscopic techniques such as 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR, FESEM, and UV–Vis. Structure of the CBBSH compounds was confirmed using a single crystal X-ray diffraction technique (SCXRDT) and applied for the potential detection of selective heavy metal ion (HMI), manganese ion (Mn2+) by using reliable electrochemical method. A small layer of CBBSH was deposited onto a smooth GCE with coating binder in order to modify a sensitive and selective Mn2+ sensor. Analytical parameters such as sensitivity, LOD, LOQ of the modified sensor (3-CBBSH/GCE) toward Mn2+ were calculated from the calibration curve (CC) as 1270.0 pA μM−1 cm−2, ≈10.0 pM, and 335.0 mM respectively. This prospective 3-CBBSH/GCE sensor used to the selective measurement of Mn2+ in spiked real samples for example industrial effluent and various water samples (red sea, surface, and tap), and found acceptable and rational results.

Artemisia judaica is used in traditional medicine in the Arabian Gulf to treat several ailments including diabetes. The present study evaluated the hydro-methanolic extract obtained from aerial parts of A. judaica (AJ-HA) for its potential to inhibit key blood sugar modulating enzymes in vitro and its antioxidant activity with phytochemical composition. AJ-HA was tested for in vitro hypoglycemic effect by its potential to inhibit pancreatic α-amylase, intestinal α-glucosidase and dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV). Antioxidant activity was determined by assessing the potential of the extract through scavenging of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals. Quantitative phytochemical evaluation was performed by determining the total content of phenolics, saponins, flavonoids, tannins and alkaloids. Interestingly the extract showed inhibitory potential for all the three key enzymes that are involved in modulating the blood glucose levels namely: α-amylase, α-glucosidase and DPP IV with IC50s in the range of 758.96–2447.40 μg/mL. AJ-HA also showed significant scavenging activity for DPPH radicals with IC50 of 85.89 μg/mL. Quantitative estimations confirmed the abundance of various phytochemical classes particularly saponins and tannins. As such, this is a proof of concept study wherein our results demonstrate that A. judaica which is used in traditional medicine for anti-diabetic properties contains active metabolites that have the potential to inhibit key blood sugar modulating enzymes. Our findings therefore has implication that warrants further investigation of A. judaica in animal models and further for the identification of lead compounds as new molecular entities for management of diabetes.
Maslinic Acid Protects Against Isoproterenol-Induced Cardiotoxicity in Albino Wistar Rats

The present study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of maslinic acid (MA) on body weight, heart weight, lipids, lipoproteins, lipid peroxidation (LPO), cardiac marker enzymes, and paraoxonase (PON) in normal control and isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial infarcted albino Wistar rats. After treatment with MA (15 mg/kg) for 7 days, myocardial infarction was induced by subcutaneous injection of ISO (85 mg/kg) for two consecutive days. ISO caused a considerable decrease in body weight and increased the heart weight. The concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, very low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol were higher, whereas that of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol was lower, in the serum of ISO-administered rats. The activities of the cardiac marker enzymes creatine kinase, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, and γ-glutamyl transferase and levels of malondialdehyde were elevated in the serum of ISO-treated rats. ISO-administered rats also exhibited a decline in the activity of PON. Pretreatment of rats with MA reduced the effects of ISO on all parameters tested. This is the first report of the protective effect of MA on ISO-induced cardiotoxicity and of an association between PON status and MA supplementation. The observed cardioprotective effects may be due to the antihyperlipidemic potential of MA, inhibition of LPO, and antioxidant activity.
