      • Herman Melville의 작품에서 제국주의 비판과 인본주의 사상

        The purpose of this article is to analyse the critical view of anti-imperialism and humanism revealed in Herman Melville’s works. He shows his critical view of imperialism and materialism increased in the American society during the antebellum period by using an ingenious and multiple narrative strategy in most of his novels. Although Melville is well known as a romantic writer who is mainly active in the romanticism of the 19th century, he reveals his poignant criticism of imperialism expanded in the American society. His anti-imperialism is based on humanism which is penetrated in almost his works. And specially, anti-imperialism and humanism are intimately related to criticism of American society in the 19th century. Melville paradoxically emphasizes humanism through criticism of imperialism and materialism increasing in his contemporary society. Because Melville was very sensitive to American social and political reality, he expressed his points of views in his works directly or indirectly with various literary techniques such as allegory and diverse symbolical values. But sometimes, because of his ambiguous and symbolical narratives, Melville has been misunderstood as an advocate of imperialism by many reviewers. In this paper, it will be revealed how Melville expressed his anti-imperialism and humanism in his works such as Moby-Dick, The Confidence-Man, Billy Budd, and “Bartleby, The Scrivener.” Because Melville felt disgusted by imperialism and materialism widespread in the American society, he thought that humanism was the most important value to be pursued by people in our society.

      • Model calculations for enhanced fluorescence in photonic crystal phosphor.

        <P>We propose a novel photonic structure, based on the photonic crystal (PC) effect, which simulations show results in an improved fluorescence efficiency from embedded phosphor. To be specific, the phosphor pumping efficiency can be significantly improved by tuning the pump photon energy to a photonic band-edge (PBE) of the PC phosphor. We have confirmed this theoretically by calculating optical properties of one-dimensional PC phosphor structures using the transfer-matrix method and plane-wave expansion method. For a particular model structure based on a quantum dot phosphor, the fluorescence enhancement factor was estimated to be as high as 6.9 for a monochromatic pump source and 2.2 for a broad bandwidth (20 nm) pump source.</P>

      • Deformable and conformal silk hydrogel inverse opal

        <P>Photonic crystals (PhCs) efficiently manipulate photons at the nanoscale. Applying these crystals to biological tissue that has been subjected to large deformation and humid environments can lead to fascinating bioapplications such as in vivo biosensors and artificial ocular prostheses. These applications require that these PhCs have mechanical durability, deformability, and biocompatibility. Herein, we introduce a deformable and conformal silk hydrogel inverse opal (SHIO); the photonic lattice of this 3D PhC can be deformed by mechanical strain. This SHIO is prepared by the UV cross-linking of a liquid stilbene/silk solution, to give a transparent and elastic hydrogel. The pseudophotonic band gap (pseudo-PBG) of this material can be stably tuned by deformation of the photonic lattice (stretching, bending, and compressing). Proof-of-concept experiments demonstrate that the SHIO can be applied as an ocular prosthesis for better vision, such as that provided by the tapeta lucida of nocturnal or deep-sea animals.</P>

      • Silk protein as a new optically transparent adhesion layer for an ultra-smooth sub-10 nm gold layer

        <P>Ultra-thin and ultra-smooth gold (Au) films are appealing for photonic applications including surface plasmon resonances and transparent contacts. However, poor adhesion at the Au–dielectric interface prohibits the formation of a mechanically stable, ultra-thin, and ultra-smooth Au film. A conventional solution is to use a metallic adhesion layer, such as titanium and chromium, however such layers cause the optical properties of pure Au to deteriorate. Here we report the use of silk protein to enhance the adhesion at the Au–dielectric interface, thus obtaining ultra-smooth sub-10 nm Au films. The Au films that were deposited onto the silk layer exhibited superior surface roughness to those deposited on SiO<SUB>2</SUB>, Si, and poly(methyl methacrylate), along with improved adhesion, electrical conductivity, and optical transparency. Additionally, we confirm that a metal–insulator–metal optical resonator can be successfully generated using a silk insulating layer without the use of a metallic adhesion layer.</P>

      • Enhanced fluorescence from CdSe/ZnS quantum dot nanophosphors embedded in a one-dimensional photonic crystal backbone structure.

        <P>A nano-engineered phosphor structure that produces enhanced fluorescence is reported. Two kinds of polymer materials with different refractive indices are spin-coated alternately to realize a one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PC) phosphor platform, in which CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) were embedded as a fluorescence agent. The 1D PC phosphor structure is designed to match the pump photon energy with one of the photonic band-edges (PBEs), where the photon group velocity becomes zero, and thus the interaction between pump photons and fluorescent centres strengthened. A reference phosphor structure is also designed and fabricated; however, it has no PBE and exhibited bulk-like photonic properties. The fluorescence intensity from the 1D PC phosphors is examined during the pump photon energy scanning across the PBE. It is found that fluorescence from the 1D PC phosphor reaches its maximum when the pump photon energy coincides with the PBE, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction. In comparison with the reference phosphor, the fluorescence from the 1D PC phosphor is measured to be enhanced by a factor of 1.36.</P>

      • 우리나라 산림경영인의 산림경영 현황과 인식

        이 연구는 산림경영인의 산림경영 현황과 산림경영에 대한 인식을 조사하기 위해 수행되었다. 10ha이상의 산림을 소유하고 산림경영에 적극적인 산림경영인 300명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 대부분의 산림경영인은 단기임산물 위주의 수익형태를 가진다. 산림작물 재배의 비율이 88.4%에 이르며, 가구소득에서도 단기임산물의 비중이 87.5%를 차지한다. 즉, 산림경영의 목적이 목재 생산보다 산림작물 재배에 있는 것으로 판단된다. 입목 가격은 산림경영인의 기대보다 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 소나무의 경우 시세는 336.8만 원/㏊이지만 산림경영인의 기대 가격 547.0만 원/㏊에 크게 못 미친다. 산림경영의 수익성 증대를 위한 정책 선호도에서 ‘산림규제 완화'(66.7%)의 응답이 가장 높았다. 또, 산림경영인 은퇴 이후 경영을 계승하기 위해 ‘산림직불제 도입'(69.0%)이 필요하다는 응답이 많았다. The objective of this study is to survey the forest management status and the perception of forest owners, who own more than 10 hectares of forestland and manage their forest as household income source. 300 forest owners are selected as subject, and surveyed face-to-face. Most forest management focuses on short-term non-timber forest products. The proportion of forest farming reaches 88.4 percent, accounting for 87.5 percent of their income. Thus, the purpose of forest management is to do forest farming rather than wood production. Moreover, stumpage prices are lower than their expectation. For pine trees, the current stumpage price is 3,368 thousand won per hectare, but the expected price is 5,476 thousand won per hectare. In terms of policy to enhance profitability of forest management, “easing forest regulations”(66.7 percent) is preferred the most. To succeed forest management after present owner’s retirement, income support system is said to be needed urgently.

        임업 · 목재산업의 산업연관분석

        이 연구의 목적은 임업과 목재산업이 전체 경제에 미치는 영향 그리고 산업의 연관관계를 분석하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 한국은행의 2015년 산업연관표를 이용하여 임업과 목재산업 중심으로 재분류하고 경제적 파급효과와 다른 산업에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 생산유발효과는 종이제품 생산업, 제재업, 영림업에서 상대적으로 높게 나타났고, 다른 목재산업의 생산유발효과는 크지 않았다. 부가가치유발효과는 영림과 원목생산에서 높게 나타났다. 그리고 목재산업에서 후방연쇄효과보다 전방연쇄효과가 높게 나타나 경제 전체를 유지하는 데 중요한 것으로 나타났다. 다른 산업에 미치는 파급효과를 분석한 결과를 보면 목재산업의 생산증가가 임업에 미치는 파급효과가 크지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 목재산업과 임업은 산림생태계 관리와 기후변화 대응에서 중요한 역할을 하므로 이들의 연관성을 높이는 것은 산림정책에서 중요한 정책과제이다. In order to identify the economic impacts of forest-related industry on the national economy in general and the linkages between forestry and its related industries, an input-output analysis was conducted using the 2015 Input-Output Tables of the Bank of Korea. Production inducement effects are relatively high in paper products, lumber, and silviculture and relatively low in other wood industries. Value-added inducement effects are relatively high in silviculture and log production. With respect to the wood products industry, forward linkage effects are higher and backward linkage effects are lower. A Ritz-Spaulding multiplier analysis revealed that the growth of wood products production has only a modest impact on the growth of forestry. How to increase the linkage between forestry and the wood products industry is one of the most important policy tasks in Korea, given that it affects forest ecosystem management and climate change mitigation efforts.

        『사기꾼: 그의 가장무도회』

        The purpose of this article is to analyze Melville’s criticism of American society and search for American identity in The Confidence-man: His Masquerade. There are many critical and satirical views of human nature and American society in this book. Melville attempts to deconstruct human nature and American society with the deception of the confidence-man in disguise, namely through his tricky masquerade. Melville blows a scathing attack and criticism on human nature and American society by transforming the confidence-man into eight avatars at the time in the 19th century. In this book, Melville tries to reveal the real substance of human nature by breaking its thick mask or wall. He shows that American spiritual-world ideal values such as charity, love, confidence, and hope were broken down because of an excessive desire for rampant materialism in American society. He emphasizes that the confidence among people was lost due to the strong human desire for money and wealth. Melville also reveals the injustice of Indian-hating and the impracticability of transcendentalism in American society through different allusions. He urges the awakening of American identity by analyzing human nature and American society.
