Mortality from Stomach Cancer in Serbia, Excluding the Province of Kosovo, in the 1991-2009 Period

Background/Aim: Stomach cancer is the second most common cause of death from all malignant tumors in the world (third in men, fifth in women), with a strong decreasing trend in most developed countries. The aim of this descriptive epidemiological study was to analyze mortality of stomach cancer in Serbia, excluding the Province of Kosovo, in the 1991-2009 period. Materials and Methods: In data analysis, we used mortality rates which were standardized directly using those of the world population as a standard. In order to analyze the mortality trend from stomach cancer, linear trend and regression analysis were used. Confidence intervals (CIs) for the average age-adjusted and age-specific mortality rates were assessed with 95% level of probability. Mortality data were derived from the data file of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia. Results: During the 1991-2009 period, a significant downward trend in mortality of stomach cancer was recorded in Serbia (y=9.78 - 0.13x, p=0.000; average annual percent change was -6.3 (95%CI, -7.8 to - 4.8). During the same period, a significant decrease in mortality trend was found both in male (y=14.13 - 0.20x; p=0.000; % change was -7.7 (95%CI, -10.9 to -4.5) and female populations (y=6.27 - 0.08x; p=0.000; % change was - 4.4 (95%CI, -5.3 to -3.6). Conclusion: Decreasing trends in mortality from stomach cancer in Serbia are similar to those in most developed countries.
Multicast polling for 10G-EPON

<P>A multicast polling scheme is proposed for 10G Ethernet passive optical networks (10G-EPONs). In the multicast polling scheme, the GATE message is broadcast to all ONUs with a new op-code of 0007. Comparing the proposed multicasting with the traditional unicasting scheme, the downstream bandwidth consumption for the control packet of the multicast is 0.011% compared with the unicast of 0.11% at the cycle time of 2ms. As a result of the upstream performance, the channel utilisation improves 3% and the saturation offered load of the end-to-end delay for the multicast and the unicast is 0.8 and 0.7, respectively.</P>
Sliding Manifold Design for Higher-order Sliding Mode Control of Linear Systems

The paper considers sliding manifold design for higher-order sliding mode (HOSM) in linear systems. In this case, the sliding manifold must meet two requirements: to achieve the desired dynamics in HOSM and to provide the appropriate relative degree of the sliding variable depending on the SM order. It is shown that in the case of single-input systems, a unique sliding manifold can be determined that satisfies these two requirements, whereas in multi-input case, such a manifold exists only in systems satisfying specific structural constraints. Theoreticallyobtained results are validated through numerical examples and illustrated by digital simulations.

The amygdala is important in emotion, but it remains unknown whether it is specialized for certain stimulus categories. We analyzed responses recorded from 489 single neurons in the amygdalae of 41 neurosurgical patients and found a categorical selectivity for pictures of animals in the right amygdala. This selectivity appeared to be independent of emotional valence or arousal and may reflect the importance that animals held throughout our evolutionary past.
Evaluation of the Composition and Morphology of a WTi/Si System Processed by a Picosecond Laser

In this work we studied the influence of laser radiation on the composition, structure and morphology of WTi thin films deposited on n-type (100) silicon wafers. The films were deposited by d.c. sputtering from a 70:30 at% W-Ti target, using Ar ions, to a thickness of ~190 nm. Irradiation was performed with a pulsed Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm, whereas the pulse duration was 150 ps. Laser fluences of 3.2and 5.9 J/cm2were found to be sufficient for modification of the WTi/silicon target system. The results show: (i) ablation of WTi thin film and a Si substrate in the central zone of spots, (ii) appearance of hydrodynamic features like resolidified material, (iii) partial ablation of the WTi thin film at the periphery and (iv) appearance of thin film cracks at the far periphery. On the non-ablated areas, the laser modifica-tion induced changes in composition, such as inter-mixing of components at the WTi/Si interface with for-mation of silicides in both metals. Surface oxidation was the dominant process in the ablated areas, which is demonstrated by the presence of a SiO2 phase.
