        Probing Quantum Confinement within Single Core–Multishell Nanowires

        <P>Theoretically core–multishell nanowires under a cross-section of hexagonal geometry should exhibit peculiar confinement effects. Using a hard X-ray nanobeam, here we show experimental evidence for carrier localization phenomena at the hexagon corners by combining synchrotron excited optical luminescence with simultaneous X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Applied to single coaxial n-GaN/InGaN multiquantum-well/p-GaN nanowires, our experiment narrows the gap between optical microscopy and high-resolution X-ray imaging and calls for further studies on the underlying mechanisms of optoelectronic nanodevices.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2012/nalefd.2012.12.issue-11/nl303178u/production/images/medium/nl-2012-03178u_0007.gif'></P>

        La poli´tica cultural en Cuba

        No es posible referirse a la politica cultural cubana de este momento sin detenerse, aunque sea un instante, en los rasgos fundamentales que definen la cultura de nuestra nacion y en sus nexos con la vida social. Cuba comienza el siglo XIX con tres siglos de dominacio´n colonial a sus espaldas. Espan~a, como escribira´ an~os despue´s el partiota Carlos Manuel de Ce´spedes en su Manifiesto del 10 de octubre, "gobierna a la Isla con brazo de hierro ensangrentado", pero no puede impedir que emerja un pensamiento que resulta deudor en cierta medida del pensamiento dela Ilustracio´n europea del siglo ⅩⅤⅢ y con ella, del ideal de la Modernidad. Estos intelectuales, formados en universidades europeas o en una importante institucio´n educacional cubana: el Seminario de San Carlos y San Ambrosio, son lectores de Voltaire, Rousseau, Montesquieu, algunos de ellos vieron con simpatia la Revolucio´n Francesa y en lo esencial coincidian en abogar por la abolicio´n de la esclavitud y la instauracio´n en la Isla de un capitalismo al estiloingle´s, por la obencio´n de reformas politicas que dieran un estatuto auto´nomo al pais -en algunos casos, como el del Padre Fe´lix Varela, abogaba francamente por la completa independencia y en lo cultural por una reforma de la educacio´n y el desarrollo de instituciones ajenas al sistema colonial: bibliotecas, liceos, ca´tedras, desde las que se expresaran las e´lites ilustradas, pues estaban convencidos de que el destino del pais estaba estrechamente asociado al crecimiento y expansio´n de su cultura.

      • Zeolite Synthesis in FluorideMedia: Structure Directiontoward ITW by Small Methylimidazolium Cations

        <P>Pure silica ITW zeolite can be synthesized using 1,2,3-trimethylimidazoliumand 1,3-dimethylimidazolium cations and fluoride anions as structure-directingagents (SDAs). Similarly to the previously reported 1,3,4-trimethylimidazolium,the dimethyl cation can also produce the zeolite TON, but this higherframework density phase finally transforms <I>in situ</I> into ITW. The structures of the as-made and calcined phases preparedwith the new cations show a unit cell doubling along <I>z</I>, and the refined structures are reported. Periodic Density FunctionalTheory calculations provide the energies of the six SDA-ITW and SDA-TONzeolites, and their relative stabilities fully agree with the experimentalobservations. Structure-direction in this system is discussed fromexperimental and theoretical results that give strong support to theidea that strained silica frameworks are made possible in fluoridemedia by decreasing the covalent character of the Si–O bond.This decreased covalency is enhanced with the 1,2,3-trimethyl isomer,which is shown to be the strongest SDA for ITW and, at the same time,is the more hydrophilic of the three SDAs tested.         Quanti cation of Immunoglobulin G against Trypanosoma cruzi in Individuals with Chronic Chagas Disease Treated with Nifurtimox and Evaluated in Prolonged Follow-Up

        In the indeterminate chronic period of Chagas disease (ChD) the treatment has not been conclusive, because the serological negativization requires many years. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of nifurtimox (NF) in the treat- ment of chronic ChD in prolonged follow-up by serological techniques of indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) IgG comparing 2 groups of patients, treated and non treated. Mann-Whit- ney test was performed for ELISA and IFA, with significant difference between the groups (P < 0.05). IgG levels were lower in individuals treated compared with untreated patients, indicating chemotherapeutic efficacy in prolonged follow-up.

        The Learning Curve for Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy in Latin America: A Slide to the Right?

        Background/Aims: Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) has been increasingly used for achalasia in Latin America, where Chagasdisease is prevalent, and this makes POEM more challenging. The aim of this study was to determine the learning curve for POEMin Latin America. Methods: Patients undergoing POEM in Latin America with a single operator were included from a prospective registry over 4 years. Non-linear regression and cumulative sum control chart (CUSUM) analyses were conducted for the learning curve. Results: A total of 125 patients were included (52% male; mean age, 59 years), of which 80 had type II achalasia (64%), and 38 hadChagas disease (30%). The average pre-procedure and post-procedure Eckardt scores were 6.79 and 1.87, respectively. Technicalsuccess was achieved in 93.5% of patients, and clinical success was achieved in 88.8%. Adverse events occurred in 27 patients (22%)and included bleeding (4 patients), pneumothorax (4 patients), mucosal perforation (13 patients), mediastinitis (2 patients), andleakage (4 patients). The CUSUM chart showed a median procedure time of 97 min (range, 45-196 min), which was achieved at the 61st procedure. Procedure duration progressively decreased, with the last 10 procedures under 50 min approaching a plateau (p-value <0.01). Conclusions: Mastering POEM in Latin America requires approximately 61 procedures for both POEM efficiency and to accomplishthe procedure within 97 minutes.
