The dung beetle, Gymnopleurus mopsus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), is one of endangered species in South Korea. It was last recorded in 1971. To restore this species, we introduced G. mopsus populations from eastern and southern regions of Mongolia in July 2019 and August 2019, respectively. One of the main tasks for the restoration of endangered insects is to develop breeding techniques to eventually incorporate these insects into the restoration system. In a series of laboratory experiments, we investigated effects of short-term hibernation periods on life-history traits of G. mopsus. Adult G. mopsus that had hibernated for 30, 60, and 90 days had lower survival rates than adults that had hibernated for 120 days. We also compared developmental time of these four experimental groups and found a significant difference in the egg - phase. However, the duration of hibernation did not affect the fecundity, brood-ball size, or body size of F1 adults. Follow-up studies are currently being conducted to further investigate the effect of a short-term hibernation period on population growth of G. mopsus under laboratory conditions.

서식반경이 좁고 개체수가 감소하는 경향을 보이고 있어 멸종위기 종으로 지정된 뚱보주름메뚜기(Haplotropis brunneriana Saussure 1888)를 대상으로 개체군 추이와 적절한 모니터링 방법을 확인하기 위해 방형구법과 선조 사법을 이용하여 밀도 조사를 수행하였다. 뚱보주름메뚜기에 대한 조사 자료가 부족하여 먼저 방형구법을 이용 하여 2021년 3월부터 6월까지 월 1회 서식지 내 개체군 밀도를 확인한 결과 6개체/100㎡(3월), 2개체/100㎡(5, 6월)로 각각 영월과 제천에서 가장 많은 개체가 확인되었고, 지역 간에 유의한 차이는 나타나지 않았다(p > 0.05). 선조사법을 이용하여 2022년 3월부터 6월까지 월 3회 개체군 밀도를 확인한 결과 1.5(±0.79)개체/100㎡, 0.76(±0.11)개체/100㎡로 각각 영월과 제천에서 4월에 가장 많은 개체가 확인되었고, 지역 간에 유의한 차이는 나타나지 않았다(p > 0.05). 조사 방법에 따라 시기와 면적에 차이가 있어 이 두 방법을 정확히 비교할 수 없으나, 공통 적으로 3, 4월 약충 시기에 많은 개체가 확인되는 것을 알 수 있었다.
Seasonal changes of insect pest community on 30 varieties of Hibiscus syriacus

This study was conducted to survey the insect pests on 30 varieties of Hibiscus syriacus. Insect pests were investigated on May, July and September in Suwon and Busan, respectively. In addition, change of insect pests on H. syriacus in Seoul was weekly investigated from May to September. As a result, 11 species 116 individuals were observed in Suwon, and 10 species of them were classified as insect pests. Also, 10 species 496 individuals were observed in Busan, and 7 species of them were classified as insect pests. In Seoul, 12 species 181 individuals were observed. Abundance and species richness of insect pests were depend of the study regions but not by H. syriacus varieties. Aphis gossypii was dominant in early May but they were dramatically disappeared since middle May. Other insect pests such as Rehimena surusalis, Haritalodes derogate, and Plautia stali were occurred from July to september.
Insect pests on thirty varieties of Hibiscus syriacus L. (Columniferae: Malvaceae) in Korea

This study was conducted to surveyed the community structure of insects on thirty varieties of Hibiscus syriacus in Busan and Suwon, Korea. In addition, seasonal changes and damage rates of major insect pest species were investigated. Insect pests were visually observed from the area of H. syriacus plantations. As a result, 16 species belonging to 9 families of 4 orders were observed, while 13 species were classified to insect pests. Among insect pests, hemipterans (6 species) and lepidopterans (4 species) were most diverse groups. During summer season, Rehimena surusalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and Haritalodes derogate (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) were damaged to flower buds and leaves, respectively. In September, nymphs and adults of Plautia stali (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) were found from flower buds and leaves.
A comparison of attractants on capture efficacy for Platypus koryoensis in oak forests

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of attractant mixture on capture efficacy on Platypus koryoensis, an insect vector of oak wilt disease in Korea. We compared three treatments, such as Citral:EtOH(5:95), EtOH, and no attractant. In order to compare the attractants, Lindgren multi-funnel traps were installed in three oak forests in the Incheon Grand Park. A total of 18 traps was installed, and traps were replaced biweekly. A total of 236, 85, and 25 individuals were collected in Citral:EtOH, EtOH, and control, respectively. Although a mixture of Citral:EtOH seems more effective in attracting P. koryoensis, number of individuals of P. koryoensis caught by attractants was different according to study sites.
