<P>CONCLUSIONS: From this panel study and the previous cross-sectional study, we found CYP11 beta 2 as the common gene, powerful to explain the interaction between obesity incidence and Na intake, in particular, among girls. Girls with hetero/mutant allele of this gene should reduce their daily Na intake to prevent obesity.</P>

For several decades, the primary goal of the automotive industry has been to reduce harmful emissions and improve fuel economy. Gasoline engines are clean and powerful propulsion systems, but have poorer fuel economy than that of diesel engines. However, due to the development of new technologies such as variable valve timing and lift and direct gasoline injection, controlled autoignition (CAI) combustion can be realized. CAI engines combine the advantages of cleaner emissions and lower fuel consumption than conventional spark-ignition gasoline engines. In this study, a cylinder-pressure-based combustion phase detection method for CAI combustion is proposed. This method utilizes a normalized difference pressure (NDP), which is defined as the normalized pressure difference between the firing and motoring in-cylinder pressures. The proposed method was developed and validated with steady-state experimental data from an inline 4 cylinder, 2 L gasoline direct injection (GDI) CAI engine. Because the calculations in the NDP method are faster and simpler than in the conventional combustion phase detection method in CAI engines, this method can be embedded in a real-time controller. Furthermore, the proposed method displayed good accuracy in detecting the combustion phase and thus stabilized CAI combustion. Finally, the detailed experimental results are presented.

Coal-tar dyes in cosmetics may elicit adverse effects in the skin and eyes. Countries, like the US, have banned the use of coal-tar dyes in cosmetics for the eye area due to the potential for ocular irritation. We evaluated the eye irritation potential of 15 coal-tar dyes permitted as cosmetic ingredients in reconstructed human cornea-like epithelium (RhCEs [EpiOcular(TM) and MCTT HCE(TM)]) tests and the short time exposure (STE) test. Eosin YS, phloxine B, tetrachlorotetrabromofluorescein, and tetrabromofluorescein were identified as irritants in RhCEs; dibromofluorescein and uranine yielded discrepant results. STE enabled further classification in accordance with the UN Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, as follows: eosin YS as Cat 2; phloxine B, Cat 1; and tetrachlorotetrabromofluorescein and tetrabromofluorescein, Cat ½. STE indicated dibromofluorescein (irritant in EpiOcular(TM)) and uranine (irritant in MCTT HCE(TM)) as No Cat, resulting in the classification of ''No prediction can be made.'' based on bottom-up approach with each model. These results demonstrated that in vitro eye irritation tests can be utilized to evaluate the potential ocular irritancy of cosmetic ingredients and provide significant evidence with which to determine whether precautions should be given for the use of coal-tar dyes in cosmetics or other substances applied to the eye area.

The detection of engine misfire events is one of major concerns in engine control due to its negative effect on air pollution and engine performance. In this paper, a misfire detection system based on crankshaft angular speed fluctuation is developed. Synthetic variable method is adopted for the preprocessing of crankshaft angular speed. This method successfully estimates the work output of each cylinder by finding the effect of combustion energy on the crankshaft rotational speed or acceleration after virtually removing the effect of the internal inertia forces from the measured crankshaft speed signals. The detection system is developed using neural network with the revised synthetic angular acceleration as input which is derived from the preprocessing. Mathematical simulation is carried out for developing and verifying the misfire detection system. Finally, the reliability of the developed system is validated through an experiment.

Many web-sites provide a variety of electronic mapping services. Currently, many studies are underway to develop vehicle navigation software for PDA maps using GPS data. Popular among these services is one that computes the optimal route between two locations input by a user. This service of computing the optimal route plays an important role in vehicular navigation and distribution and delivery industries. The calculation and manipulation of the optimal route for navigation and vehicular delivery system improve the efficiency of vehicle use and delivery times, thereby reducing costs. The purpose of this study is to compute the optimal route by considering the direction of distribution vehicles and the delivery location and develop a genetic based algorithm that quickly generates the shortest route for delivery. The algorithm also generates the optimal route for itineraries having several destinations.
