Purpose: Whether subtotal or total colectomy with primary anastomosis (PA) is safer than Hartmann procedure (HP) for left-sided colon cancer obstruction or perforation remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare postoperative morbidity, mortality, and defecation frequency between PA and HP for left-sided colon cancer obstruction or perforation. Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 54 patients from January 2014 to February 2018 who underwent emergency surgery due to left-sided colon cancer obstruction or perforation. Results: PA was carried out in 20 patients while HP was performed for 34 patients. Thirty-day mortality did not show significant difference between the two groups (15.0% vs. 14.7%, P=1.000). No anastomotic leakage occurred in PA group while three (8.8%) cases of stump leakage occurred in HP group. Stoma repair was performed for 13 cases (44.8%) and stoma reformation was performed for one case in HP group (7.7%). Stoma related complications occurred in five cases (17.24%). For patients after stoma repair, defecation frequency at 3 months after operation was 2.91±2.88 times per day in PA group and 2.86±2.63 times per day in HP group. At 1 year after operation, defecation frequency was changed to 1.40±1.12 times per day in PA group and 1.17±0.39 times per day in HP group. Clinical and Genetic Characteristics of Retinal Capillary Hemangioblastoma in Korean Patients

Purpose: We investigated the clinical features of Korean patients with retinal capillary hemangioblastoma (RCH) and genetic variants of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) gene. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on patients with RCH from 2003 to 2021 at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. Sporadic and hereditary RCH associated with VHL disease were classified based on the specific tumors and family history. Clinical features, including the location and number of RCH and bilateral involvement, were investigated. Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and direct sequencing targeting the VHL gene were performed for six RCH cases associated with VHL disease. Results: A total of 18 patients (23 eyes) were enrolled in this study. The mean age at diagnosis was 37 ± 15 years. Twelve patients had hereditary RCH associated with VHL disease, and six patients had sporadic RCH. All five patients with bilateral RCH were clinically diagnosed with VHL disease, and 13 patients had unilateral RCH. Juxtapapillary RCH was only observed in patients with VHL. The most common complication of RCH was the epiretinal membrane, followed by the subretinal fluid. Pathogenic variants were identified in four patients. All three patients with type 1 VHL had the well-known missense mutation p.Glu70Lys, and one patient with type 2 VHL had the nonsense mutation p.Trp88Ter. Conclusions: In Korean patients with RCH, bilateral involvement and juxtapapillary RCH are highly likely to be associated with VHL disease. Because RCH may be the first clinical manifestation in patients with VHL, active genetic testing of the VHL gene and systemic evaluation are required.

<P>We demonstrate the high efficiency of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) light-emitting diode (LED) grown on the electrochemically etched nanoporous (NP) GaN. The photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectra show that the LEDs with NP GaN have a strong carrier localization effect resulting from the relaxed strain and reduced defect density in MQWs. Also, the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation shows that the light extraction efficiency (LEE) is increased by light scattering effect by nanopores. The output power of LED with NP GaN is increased up to 123.1% at 20 mA, compared to that of LED without NP GaN. The outstanding performance of LEDs with NP GaN is attributed to the increased internal quantum efficiency (IQE) by the carrier localization in the indium-rich clusters, low defect density in MQWs, and increased LEE owing to the light scattering in NP GaN.</P>

<P>We demonstrated that the viscoelasticity of a dielectric surface affected the overlying pentacene crystalline nanostructures and the electrical performances of pentacene-based field-effect transistors (FETs). The surface viscoelasticities of the gate dielectrics were systematically controlled by varying the polymer chain lengths of polystyrene brushes (<I>b</I>-PSs) and the substrate temperature during pentacene deposition. The <I>b</I>-PSs were chosen as a model surface because the glass–liquid transition affected neither the surface energy nor the surface roughness. Moreover, the glass–liquid transition temperature increased with increasing <I>b</I>-PS chain length. The liquid-like <I>b</I>-PS chains disturbed the surface arrangement of the pentacene molecules, which reduced the organization of the crystalline structures, yielding smaller grains during the early stages of pentacene growth. The dramatic changes in the film morphology and crystalline nanostructures above the <I>b</I>-PS glass–liquid transition resulted in noticeable changes in the OFET performance. The systematic investigation of the dielectric surface viscoelasticity presented here provides a significant step toward optimizing the nanostructures of organic semiconductors, and thereby, the device performance, by engineering the interfaces in the OFETs.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jpccck/2012/jpccck.2012.116.issue-41/jp305820r/production/images/medium/jp-2012-05820r_0007.gif'></P>
Adsorption characteristics of volatile organic compounds onto lyocell‑based activated carbon fibers

Fibrous adsorbents, such as activated carbon fibers (ACF) have acknowledged advantages of rapid adsorption rate and ease of modification compared with granular and powdered adsorbents. Based on the surface modification of lyocell-based ACF, we observed different surface characteristics of ACF samples with variation in the mixing ratio and impregnation time of H3PO4, NaCl, and KMnO4 solution. For an engineering application, we also explored the adsorption characteristics of thusproduced ACF samples onto volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Isothermal adsorption experiments were performed using toluene and benzene as adsorbates. Results indicate that both physical and chemical surface properties have an effect on the adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The gelation process of the 4wt.% PAni-EB/NMP solution was characterized by measuring the viscoelastic property in oscillatory test. The solution showed a weak gel state in which the storage modulus decreased rapidly even at low strain in the constant angular frequency test, and the damping factor increased rapidly to a state of typical viscous liquid at a specific angular frequency in the early stage of the constant strain test. It was supposed that the weak bonding of dipole force between polymer molecules was broken by the external deformation. The angular frequency of the sudden change in the damping factor was defined as a critical angular frequency. The PAni solutions with a prior shear deformation resulted in the lower critical angular frequency, showing the delay of gelation process by the prior shear deformation. The PAni solution with the metal-organic framework(MOF) resulted in the lower critical angular frequency proving the anti-gel effect of the MOF.
