Studies have established significant relations among achievement goal-orientations, patterns of involvement in sport and social, cognitive and affective determinants of sport involvement in youth. This study sought to establish if task and ego goal orientations of Botswana youths are related to their level of involvement in sport, perceived sport ability, perceptions of parental influences and enjoyment of sport. A total of 716 secondary school students from Botswana aged 12-18 years participated in this study. Participants completed a background information questionnaire, the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ) and items on sport enjoyment, sport ability and perceptions of parental beliefs. The youths were participants in different types of competitive sports and leisure physical activities. Results showed that the two factor structure of the TEOSQ fit the current data with modifications. Participants in competitive sports had significantly higher task and ego orientation and perceived greater parental support than recreational participants. Task orientation and perceived sport ability were predictive of youth`s enjoyment of sport. The results are consistent with previous findings and suggest that youth sports behaviours in Botswana are affected by similar cognitive-affective factors found in studies conducted among youth elsewhere. This has important implications for the development of youth sport and physical activity programmes in Botswana and African contexts.

This study examined the relationships between coaching efficacy, experience, and perceived coaching behaviors among Botswana scholastic coaches. It was anticipated that coaching efficacy would significantly predict coaching behaviors after statistically controlling for previous coaching experience. A sample of 118 coaches (104 male, 14 female) completed the Coaching Efficacy Scale (Feltz, Chase, Moritz, & Sullivan, 1999) and the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (Zhang, Jensen, & Mann, 1997). Previous coaching experience was a significant negative predictor of autocratic coaching behaviors, whereas general coaching efficacy was a significant predictor of training and instruction, positive feedback, social support, situational consideration, and democratic behaviors after controlling for previous experience. These results were comparable to previous North American studies, offering further information relative to the construct of coaching efficacy in a non-North American population. However, notable differences in relationships of coaching efficacy, experience, and perceived coaching behaviors may be attributable to contextual differences in culture.
Understanding Olympians Career Development in Southern Africa

The role of nuanced contextual factors on elite athletes’ career development and transition is relatively unknown. This study examines career development of elite athletes in Southern Africa, their psychosocial development across the phases of elite lifespan development, as well as their career transition experiences. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from 16 retired Olympians (M age = 30 at retirement; males = 11, females = 5) from four Southern African countries and seven Olympic sports. Our findings suggest similar psychosocial stages of career development to those in the literature but culturally nuanced career development and transitions for the athletes. The school system and national sport federations play a significant role on athletes’ development. The study shows promise for context specific research and use of the social constructivist approach to explaining career transition in sport.
The Strength of Coaching Efficacy Between Certified and Noncertified Singapore Coaches

The purpose of the present study was to examine the coaching efficacy of certified and uncertified Singapore coaches. Specifically, this study examined whether coaches differed on coaching efficacy dimensions of motivation, game strategy, technique, and character building. Gender differences in coaching efficacy were also examined. Participants were 169 male and 66 female youth coaches of diverse sports in Singapore. Coaches were administered the Coaching Efficacy Scale (CES: Feltz, Chase, Moritz, & Sullivan, 1999) and a demographic information questionnaire. The factor structure of the CES was examined and a reasonable fit of the data to the four factors was found. The most significant differences between certified and uncertified coaches were in the higher game strategy and technique efficacy of certified coaches. The only gender difference found was a weak effect for game strategy efficacy. Male coaches had slightly higher strategy efficacy than female coaches.
