Radiation-induced oral mucositis is probably the most common toxicity for head and neck cancer patients. This adverse effect potentially leads to various lesions such as erythema, ulcerations, pain, opportunistic infections, and weight loss. Although there are many experimental studies and clinical trials related to novel therapies for radiation-induced oral mucositis, we here evaluate the protective effect of orally administrated Yeoldahanso-tang (YDHS) on radiation-induced oral mucosal damage in a mouse model. YDHS is a traditional Korean herbal formula, containing 7 herbs: Pueraria thunbergiana Benth., Angelica tenuissima Nakai, Platycodon grandiflorum (Jacq.) A. DC., Raphanus sativus var., Angelica dahurica Benth. et Hooker f., Cimicifuga heracleifolia Kom., and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. Oral mucosal damage was induced by irradiation (17 Gy) throughout the head and neck area in male BALB/c mice. YDHS (400 or 800 mg/kg/day for consecutive 12 days) was administered orally, and the protective effect was determined by histological evaluation of the oral mucosa. We found that irradiation highly increased COX-2 expression in salivary glands and its expression was suppressed by YDHS. Histologically, the irradiated mice exhibited the epithelial thickness from the basement membrane to the stratum granulosum significantly decreased as compared to the vehicle group. YDHS-treated mice showed significantly recovered epithelial cell layer thickness compared to irradiated group. Similarly, YDHS-treated group also showed the expression of Ki-67, cell proliferation maker, in the basal layer compared to the irradiated group in both dorsal and ventral surface. From these results, we suggest that YDHS is a promising candidate for preventing or treating radiation-induced oral mucositis during radiation therapy.

A novel photonic microwave notch filter with capability of frequency tuning is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The scheme is based on a fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based, single longitudinal mode, wavelength-spacing tunable dual-wavelength fiber laser and a dispersive fiber delay line. By using a symmetrical S-bending technique along the FBGs, the wavelength spacing of the laser can be tuned, which enables the microwave notch frequency tuning. Experimental results show that the notch rejection of more than 30 dB and the flexible tunability of notch frequency can be readily achieved in the range of 1.2 approximately 6.7 GHz.

A novel scheme for the suppression of intra- wavelength-channel mode competition in a multiwavelength SOA-based ring laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The scheme is based on coupled ring cavities, which act as mode filters to suppress the side mode frequencies. The proposed scheme performance is evaluated in terms the output power, long term stability, and side-mode suppression ratio of the proposed SOA-based ring laser. A side mode suppression ratio lager than 10 dB is readily achieved by incorporating a subcavity inside a main ring cavity, due to Vernier effect induced by the coupled dual cavities. Also is investigated the possibility of the use of the noise-reduced multiwavelength laser as a transmitter light source within wavelength division-multiplexed passive optical network.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel bidirectional wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network architecture that fully utilizes the superior optical properties of an incoherent continuous-wave (CW) supercontinuum (SC) source. The proposed architecture, which incorporates low-cost Fabry–PÉrot laser diodes that have been wavelength locked by spectrum-sliced beams from a depolarized 130-nm-bandwidth CW SC source, is based on a unique wavelength band allocation scheme of the C-band for an optical line terminal (OLT), the L-band for optical network units (ONUs), and the U-band for channel monitoring. A cost-effective network that features a single broadband source at the OLT, and no additional wavelength-band-selective monitoring beam reflector at each ONU can be readily achieved. The experimental demonstration presented in this paper is carried out at a data rate of 622 Mb/s over a 25-km standard single-mode fiber.

A femtosecond pulse fiber laser at 1935 nm using a bulk-structured Bi2Te3 topological insulator.

We experimentally demonstrate a femtosecond mode-locked, all-fiberized laser that operates in the 2 μm region and that incorporates a saturable absorber based on a bulk-structured bismuth telluride (Bi(2)Te(3)) topological insulator (TI). Our fiberized saturable absorber was prepared by depositing a mechanically exfoliated, ~30 μm-thick Bi(2)Te(3) TI layer on a side-polished optical fiber platform. The bulk crystalline structure of the prepared Bi(2)Te(3) layer was confirmed by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The modulation depth of the prepared saturable absorber was measured to be ~20.6%. Using the saturable absorber, it is shown that stable, ultrafast pulses with a temporal width of ~795 fs could readily be generated at a wavelength of 1935 nm from a thulium/holmium co-doped fiber ring cavity. This experimental demonstration confirms that bulk structured, TI-based saturable absorbers can readily be used as an ultra-fast mode-locker for 2 μm lasers.

Tunable Dispersion and Dispersion Slope Compensator Using Strain-Chirped Fiber Bragg Grating

We propose a tunable dispersion and dispersion slope compensator based on induced strain-chirp in a uniform fiber Bragg grating. A specially designed mechanical rotator concatenated with a metal beam with linear thickness variation along its height was used to induce a quadratic strain gradient along the grating. We successfully demonstrated the dispersion and dispersion slope change by adjusting the rotation angle and feasibility of dispersion and dispersion slope compensation at 160-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero transmission by simulation
