Inherently Flame Retardant Nylon 6 Nanocomposite Fibers

        Hao Wu,Mourad Krifa,Joseph H. Koo 한국섬유공학회 2018 Fibers and polymers Vol.19 No.7

In this study, inherently flame retardant nanocomposite nylon 6 fibers infused with nanoclay and intumescent additives were compounded and melt-spun. Two approaches were adopted to mitigate the loss of mechanical properties typically observed nanocomposite fiber systems: (a) additive particle size reduction; and (b) elastomer toughening of the nanocomposite system. As a result, the ductility of the FR nanocomposite formulations was improved significantly. Structural and morphological characterization of the melt-spun fibers using TEM and XRD demonstrated good dispersion of the additives and exfoliation of the nanoclay platelets. Microscale Combustion Calorimetry analysis demonstrated effective reduction of heat release capacity and thus significant enhancement of flame retardant performance of the compounded fibers.

Asymmetric Bilateral Traumatic Epidural Hematoma: A Report of a Rare Traumatic Lesion

        Ghassen Gader,Nesrine Jemel,Mohamed Ilyes Krifa,Kerima Bel Hadj Ali,Mouna Rkhami,Ihsen Zammel,Mohamed Badri 대한신경손상학회 2022 Korean Journal of Neurotrauma Vol.18 No.2

Bilateral epidural hematoma is a rare presentation in head trauma injuries, accounting for only 1%–2% of all epidural hematomas, but with a higher mortality rate than the unilateral form. Herein, we report the case of a 27-year-old man admitted to our department following a road traffic accident. On admission, his Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score was 13/15. After a few minutes, he became comatose (GCS 6/15) with right anisocoria. CT scan revealed a bilateral asymmetric epidural hematoma with a left extralabyrinthic linear fracture. Surgical evacuation was subsequently performed, starting with the voluminous right hematoma. The patient was discharged on the 23rd postoperative day with a right third-nerve palsy. Conclusions: In this case report, we discuss the etiology, mechanism, and management of bilateral epidural hematoma. Early diagnosis and a judicious surgical approach for bilateral epidural hematoma are necessary to minimize mortality and morbidity. Prevention is key to reducing traumatic brain injuries.

      • Glioma Epidemiology in the Central Tunisian Population: 1993-2012

        Trabelsi, Saoussen,Brahim, Dorra H'mida-Ben,Ladib, Mohamed,Mama, Nadia,Harrabi, Imed,Tlili, Kalthoum,Yacoubi, Mohamed Tahar,Krifa, Hedi,Hmissa, Sihem,Saad, Ali,Mokni, Moncef Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.20

Background: Glioma is a heterogeneous central nervous system (CNS) tumor group that encompasses different histological subtypes with high variability in prognosis. The lesions account for almost 80% of primary malignant brain tumors. The aim of this study is to extend our understanding of the glioma epidemiology in the central Tunisian region. Materials and Methods: We analyzed 393 gliomas recorded in cancer registry of central Tunisia from 1993 to 2012. Crude incidence rates (CR) and world age-standardized rates (ASR) were estimated using annual population data size and age structure. Statistic correlations were established using Chi-square and Kaplan-Meier test. Results: Tunisian glioma patients were identified with a mean age at diagnosis of 48 years and 1.5 sex ratio (male/female). During the 19 years period of study the highest incidence value was observed in male group between 1998 and 2002 (CR: 0.28, ASR: 0.3). Incidence results underline increasing high grade glioma occurring in the adulthood in the last period (2007-2012). Median survival was 27 months, with 1-, 2- and 5-year survival rates of 42%, 30% and 26%, respectively. Survival was greater in patients with younger age, lower tumor grade, infratentrial tumor location and undergoing a palliative treatment. Conclusions: This central Tunisia gliomas registry study provides important information that could improve glioma management and healthcare practice.

Assessment of Rhamnus alaternus Leaves Extract: Phytochemical Characterization and Antimelanoma Activity

        Ines Bouhlel Chatti,Imene Ben Toumia,Yosr Krichen,Mouna Maatouk,Leila Chekir Ghedira,Mounira Krifa 한국식품영양과학회 2022 Journal of medicinal food Vol.25 No.9

Rhamnus alaternus (Rhamnaceae) has been used as a laxative, purgative, diuretic, antihypertensive, and depurative. However, few scientific research studies on its antimelanoma activity have been reported. This study aimed to investigate the in vitro antimelanoma effect of an enriched total oligomer flavonoid (TOF) extract, from R. alaternus, and to identify its phytochemical compounds. The chemical composition of TOF extract was assessed by HPLC-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/ESI-MS2) analysis. Antimelanoma activity was determined on cultured tumor cell B16F10 by the crystal violet assay, the alkaline comet assay, acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB), annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate/ propidium iodide (V-FITC/PI) staining, the cell cycle distribution, and the wound healing assay. Regarding chemical composition, a mixture of quercetin diglucoside, quercetin-3-O-neohesperidoside, kaempferol-3-O-(2G-α-L-rhamnosyl)-rutinoside, rhamnetin hexoside, kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, rhamnocitrin hexoside, pilosin hexoside, apigenin glucoside, and kaempferol-3-O-glucoside was identified as major phytochemical compounds of the extracts. TOF extract inhibits melanoma B16F10 cell proliferation in dose-dependent manner. The induction of apoptosis was confirmed by comet assay, AO/EB, and annexin V-FITC/PI test. TOF extract could also induce S phase cell cycle, inhibit, and delay the cell migration of B16F10 cells. The findings showed that TOF extract from R. alaternus could be a potentially good candidate for future use in alternative antimelanoma treatments.

      • Meningeal Hemangiopericytomas and Meningomas: a Comparative Immunohistochemical and Genetic Study

        Trabelsi, Saoussen,Mama, Nadia,Chourabi, Maroua,Mastouri, Maroua Haddaji,Ladib, Mohamed,Popov, Sergey,Burford, Anna,Mokni, Moncef,Tlili, Kalthoum,Krifa, Hedi,Jones, Chris,Yacoubi, Mohamed Tahar,Saad, Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.16

Background: The meningeal hemangiopericytoma (MHPC) is a vascular tumor arising from pericytes. Most intracranial MHPCs resemble meningiomas (MNGs) in their clinical presentation and histological features and may therefore be misdiagnosed, despite important differences in prognosis. Materials and Methods: We report 8 cases of MHPC and 5 cases of MNG collected from 2007 to 2011 from the Neuro-Surgery and Histopathology departments. All 13 samples were re reviewed by two independent pathologists and investigated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using mesenchymal, epithelial and neuro-glial markers. Additionally, we screened all tumors for a large panel of chromosomal alterations using multiplex ligation probe amplification (MLPA). Presence of the NAB2-STAT6 fusion gene was inferred by immunohistochemical staining for STAT6. Results: Compared with MNG, MHPCs showed strong VIM (100% of cases), CD99 (62%), bcl-2 (87%), and p16 (75%) staining but only focal positivity with EMA (33%) and NSE (37%). The p21 antibody was positive in 62% of MHPC and less than 1% in all MNGs. MLPA data did not distinguish HPC from MNG, with PTEN loss and ERBB2 gain found in both. By contrast, STAT6 nuclear staining was observed in 3 MHPC cases and was absent from MNG. Conclusions: MNG and MHPC comprise a spectrum of tumors that cannot be easily differentiated based on histopathology. The presence of STAT6 nuclear positivity may however be a useful diagnostic marker.
