Among various techniques applied for fabricating high Tc superconducting thin films and devices, laser processing has been attracting rapidly growing interest because of its versatile utility not only in making films but also in property modification and patterning of films. Here, characteristic features of high Tc cuprate superconductors are summarized first to be discussed in relation to the subsequently presented topical problems in laser processing of high Tc films.

The installation of residential fuel cell systems (FCs) with photovoltaic generation systems (PVs) in residences has begun in Japan. Because of the reverse power flow from PVs, the line voltage may exceed the proper range during daytime operation. In addition, because residential PVs are connected to a single-phase distribution system, the voltage imbalance rate may increase. Here, we focus on an FC with a large available capacity during the daytime, so as to adjust the voltage by reactive power control with the available capacity of the FC. We propose a method of reactive power control that uses the available capacity of FCs to improve the voltage magnitude and voltage imbalance rate in a distribution network.
HIGHLY DIELECTRIC AMORPHOUS Ti$O_2$ FILMS PREPARED IN AIR BY PLASMA CVD

We have developed a torch-type plasma generator to make low temperature material processings possible in open air conditions. By using this plasma torch, $TiO_2$ films were deposited on substrates exposed to air by feeding $Ti(OEt)_4$ into the plasma. XPS and X-ray analyses revealed that the films were stoichiometric and amorphous $TiO_2$, but Raman spectra indicated the existence of short-range crystallinity in the films. The phase structure of the films changed from anatase to rutile by the admixing of hydrogen in the plasma. The rutile $TiO_2$ film had a high breakdown electric field as well as a high dielectric constant.

A new possibility of our atmospheric cold plasma torch has been examined on the treatment of air-exposed surface of a vulcanized rubber. The plasma treatment effect was evaluated by the wettability as well as by the bondability with a urethane adhesive. the adhesive property was improved by the plasma treatment with the increase in oxygen radical in the plasma.
