Causes of low vision and major low-vision devices prescribed in the low-vision clinic of Nepal Eye Hospital, Nepal

Kishor Sapkota,김덕훈 한국통합생물학회 2017 Animal cells and systems Vol.21 No.3

Visual impairment is a major public health problem. Identifying the main causes of low vision and the major low-vision devices prescribed will help to develop and implement the low-vision rehabilitation service. We find out the causes of low vision and the low-vision devices prescribed in the low-vision clinic of Nepal Eye Hospital. A retrospective cross-sectional review of all patients attending the lowvision clinic from 1 May 2009 to 31 April 2011. Patients having visual acuity less than 3/60 in the better eye with best refractive correction were excluded. Of the 137 patients, the mean age was 32.53 ± 22.90 years; 71.5% were male and 67.88% were under 40. The major causes of low vision were nystagmus (30.70%), high refractive error (22.62%), cataract (15.30%), retinitis pigmentosa (15.30%) and age-related macular degeneration (13.10%); 78.10% patents were wearing glasses while telescopes were prescribed for 29.20% patients. Nystagmus, high refractive error and cataract are the main causes of low vision in Nepal. The majority of the low-vision patients seen in this clinic are of working age. Telescopes are the major low-vision device prescribed. We review approach the cause of low-vision problem in low-vision clinic Nepal Eye Hospital, Nepal.

      • Association between astigmatism and amblyopia.

Sapkota, Kishor,Kim, Douk Hoon The Korean Society of Clinical Health Science 2022 한국임상보건과학회지 Vol.10 No.1

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the association between stigmatism and amblyopia. Methods: It was a hospital based, cross-sectional retrospective study conducted in Nepal Eye Hospital. Medical record of amblyopic children aged 13 years or younger from were reviewed. Children with amblyopic eyes due to simple astigmatism were included. Relation between depth of amblyopia with magnitude and types of astigmatism, orientation of axis was determined. Out of 139 amblyopic eyes of 82 children, 93 were simple myopic astigmatism and remaining 42 were simple hyperopic astigmatism. Results: Mean age of patients was 7.38±2.61 years. Visual acuity improved by at least one line in Snellen chart in 4/5th of eyes after astigmatic correction. Moderate amblyopia was found to be present in 45% eyes while severe amblyopia in 16% of eyes. With the rule astigmatism was found to be present in 88% eyes. Mean astigmatism was 2.47±0.98D and majority of eyes (67.7%) had high astigmatism. Depth of amblyopia was not associated with magnitude of astigmatism (p > 0.05) but number of lines improved with astigmatic correction was correlated with the magnitude of astigmatism (p < 0.001). Risk of amblyopia is more in high myopic astigmatism. Conclusion: Presenting age of amblyopic children was late in Nepal. Depth of amblyopia was not associated with magnitude of astigmatism.

      • Analysis on the corneal thickness and anterior chamber depth of the Keratoconus using Pentacam

Kim, Douk-Hoon,Sapkota, Kishor The Korean Society of Clinical Health Science 2018 한국임상보건과학회지 Vol.6 No.1

Purpose: To investigate the corneal thickness and anterior chamber depth (ACD) of eyes with Keratoconus in the Korean population with the Pentacam. Methods: The subjects consisted of 84 eyes from Keratoconic adults aged 7-59 years during 2010. The thinnest area, apex zone, and pupil centre of the corneal thickness were measured using the Pentacam pachymetry. ACD value was also measured with Pentacam. Results: There was a statistically significant relationship between thickness of the cornea at the apex area and the pupil centre (p=0.0001). However, there was no statistical difference (p>0.5) in the mean thickness of thinnest area, apex zone, pupil centre of cornea between right eye and left eye. Also, correlation between ACD and corneal thickness in all subjects had no statistical differences (p>0.05) in all subjects. Conclusion: These results suggested that the regional thickness of cornea and ACD with Pentacam can provide correct and useful diagnostic information of the morphology of Keratoconus for the RGP contact lens and diagnosis of abnormal corneal refraction surgery.

      • 한국인 20세부터 24세까지 각막 두께와 안압의 분석

        김덕훈,Douk Hoon Kim,Kishor Sapkota 한국임상보건과학회 2023 한국임상보건과학회지 Vol.11 No.1

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of the cornea thickness and intra ocular pressure Korean adult of 20 to 24 year old using the Pentacam and tonometer. Methods: The subjects of this study were 43 Korean adults with healthy eyes. Corneal thickness was measured with Pentacam device. The intra ocular pressure was measured with tonometer. Data was analyzed by means of the Pearson's correlation cofficient. P-values<0.001 were considered statistically significant. Results: Mean age of subjects was 20.41±0.86 years. The mean +/- intra ocular pressure of the right eye and left eye were 16.236±2.523mmHg and 16.971±1.992mmHg, respectively. The mean central corneal thickness of the right eye and left eye was 545.324±38.682㎛ and 547.442±33.778㎛, respectively. No significant difference in central corneal thickness was found between the right and left eyes. But, there was a statistically significant difference between central cornea thickness and peripheral cornea thickness around 4 mm of central cornea(p<0.001, Pearson's correlation). However there was no statistically significant difference between central cornea thickness and intra ocular pressure. Conclusion: The results of this study could be used as a clinical reference data for diagnosis and treatment of cornea in Korean adult.
