The antioxidant activity of conducting polymers in biomedical applications

The radical scavenging ability of soluble conducting polymers has been examined using the DPPH assay in comparison withphenolic antioxidant compounds present in the diet. The reducing strength was also determined by voltammetry at a carbonelectrode both in an aqueous pH 7.0 buer, and in methanol as used for the DPPH assay. The conducting polymers were shown tobe good reducing agents and eective scavengers of free radicals, with 24 DPPH radicals being reduced for each aniline or pyrroleunit on the polymer chains. The signicance of this antioxidant capacity for the application of conducting polymers as biomaterialsis considered.

Thin lms of polypyrrole were electropolymerised on a platinum electrode in electrolytes containing the small mobile chloride anion,laser excitations of 488 nm and 785 nm. Cyclic voltammetry indicated that anion movement dominates the redox processes in a KClelectrolyte, and cation movement in NaDBS media, while in K2SO4 both anions and cations are involved during doping and dedoping.The reduction of polpyrrole was eectively monitored by the increase of the 1555 cm. 1 band (mC@ C) using the 488 nm laser, and theoxidation of polpyrrole by the appearance of a band at 921 cm. 1 (d.

Thin lms of polyaniline containing the dopant ions polyvinylsulfonate (PVS) and polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) have been prepared on25 l m Pt disk microelectrodes and tested for ascorbic acid oxidation in various buers and in wine and orange juice containing solutions.neutral pH buer, with minimal interference from other oxidisable compounds. However, unknown wine and juice components lessenthe ascorbic acid oxidation current through their interaction with the polyaniline layer.
Formation of poly-2,5-dimethoxyaniline on steels

Stable films of poly-2,5-dimethoxyaniline were grown on 304 stainless steel by electrochemical polymerisation in an oxalic acid electrolyte. The conducting polymer was also formed electrochemically on mild steel, but the film was unstable and readily peeled off when cycled in a monomer-free electrolyte. Cyclic voltammetry and in situ Raman spectroscopy showed that the poly-2,5-dimethoxyaniline on 304 stainless steel existed in a partially oxidized state only over a narrowrange from around 200 to 400 mV (SCE). Corrosion potential tests in 0.5 M HCl were marked by fluctuations in the potential from )150 to +250 mV (SCE) over a period of several days as regions of oxidized polymer reached and passivated the steel substrate, in a similar manner as has been observed for polyaniline.
Effect of deposition current density on the linear actuation behaviour of PPy(CF₃SO₃) films

Free-standing lms of PPy(CF₃SO₃) were galvanostatically electropolymerised in propylene carbonate on a stainless steel electrodeusing dierent deposition current densities. The actuation performance of these lms in an aqueous 1.0 M NaPF6 electrolyte was inves-linear strain of the lms decreased with a higher deposition current density. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to estimate theamount of ‘disordered carbon’, carbonyl carbon and the doping level of the lms. These values were related to the strain obtained fromECMD measurements. SEM images revealed a denser lm morphology for lms deposited using a lower current density.

Polypyrrole (PPy) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) powders were prepared using various molar ratios of ammoniumpersulfate (APS) to their respective monomers. The antioxidant properties of these polymers were investigated through their reactionwith the stable and intensely coloured DPPH radical. The DPPH scavenging activity was higher for PPy versus PEDOT, and decreasedfor both conducting polymers as the level of APS oxidant used in their formation was raised. The conductivity of the resulting polymers.
Evaluation of antioxidant activity of aniline and polyaniline

The ability of aniline and polyaniline (PANI) samples to act as antioxidants using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)free-radical method are investigated by applying UVVIS and ESR spectroscopy. The UVVIS spectra of reaction mixtures inMeOH showed that PANI is more eective than aniline in eliminating the DPPH radicals by a factor of 5.8, while HCl-doped PANIwas about 1.7 times more eective than PANI. A study of the kinetics of the reaction between DPPH and aniline showed that thereaction is rst order with respect to DPPH and approximately second order with respect to aniline. The relationship between thisand a previously proposed mechanism for this reaction is discussed.
Polyaniline nanotubes doped with polymeric acids

Self-assembled polyaniline (PANI) nanotubes were prepared in the presence of three dierent polymeric acids as dopants, namelypoly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) (PSSA), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) (PMVEA) by oxidative poly-merization using ammonium persulfate as the oxidant. The molecular structure of polymeric acids had a signicant eect on the mor-phology and size of the polyaniline nanotubes as determined by SEM. The PANI nanotubes were also characterized by FTIRspectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy.
