Relative Survival of Breast Cancer Patients in Iran

Background: The survival rate reflecting prognosis of breast cancer patients is usually estimated based on crude survival methods such as observed and cause-specific. In situations where data are based on population-cancer registries, this method may produce biased estimations. This study therefore aimed to estimate the net survival of breast cancer based on relative survival. Materials and Methods: Data for 622 breast cancer patients diagnosed at the Iran Cancer Institute during 1990-95 and tracked till the end of 2000 were analyzed. For estimation of relative survival, Ederer's second method and SAS (9.1) and STATA (11) software were used. Results: Threeyear relative survivals of 85%, 90%, 80% and 67% were observed for age groups 15-44, 55-59, 60-74, and 75+years-old, respectively. A relative survival of approximately one was observed for two subsequent years for age-group 45-59 years-old. A value greater than one for two subsequent years of follow-up was observed in the age-group 60-74 years-old. Conclusions: Tracking the diagnosis of breast cancer, the relative survival decreases as we go to higher age-groups. It is also perceived that through follow-up, relative survival first decreased and then increased a little. The statistical cure point is acceptable for age group 45-59 years-old while for age-groups 15-44 and 60-74 years old is a sign of low quality data for some follow-up intervals.

This paper addresses the inelastic local buckling of the curved plates using finite strip method in which buckling modes and displacements of the curved plate are calculated using sinusoidal shape functions in the longitudinal direction and polynomial functions in the transverse direction. A virtual work formulation is employed to establish the stiffness and stability matrices of the curved plate whilst the governing equations are then solved using a matrix eigenvalue problem. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed finite strip model is verified with finite element model using ABAQUS as well as the results reported elsewhere while a good agreement is achieved. In order to illustrate the proposed model, a comprehensive parametric study is performed on the steel and aluminium curved plates in which the effects of curvature, the length of the curved plate as well as circumferential boundary conditions on the critical buckling stress are investigated. The developed finite strip method is also used to determine the buckling loads of the curved plates with thickness-tapered sections as well as critical stresses of the aluminium cylindrical sectors that are subjected to uniform longitudinal stresses.

Herein, we demonstrated a facile non-covalent functionalization route to exploit the GO sheets as anefficient carrier for high loading of Zn(II) corrosion inhibitor with the controllable slow release. The Zn(II)intercalated GO exhibited good compatibility with epoxy matrix stemming from the chemical andstructural alterations as confirmed by Raman analysis along with XPS, FE-SEM and HRTEM. The kineticsof Zn(II) release from the GO carrier revealed the consistency of experimental data with the Higuchimodel. EIS combined with cathodic disbondment tests results proved the dual-function active/passivecorrosion mitigation of Zn(II) intercalated GO-Epoxy system.

A novel silicone (Si) containing vinylic monomer, N-(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl) methacrylamide (TESPMA), based on 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and methacryloyl chloride (MCl) has been synthesized for formulation of waterborne polyurethane (WPU). Two types of vinyl group containing Si, methacryloxypropyltriethoxysilane (MPTES) and triethoxyvinylsilane (TEVS), have been used as coupling reagents for comparison of the effects of Si kinds with TESPMA on the WPU. A series of new siliconized WPU, vinyl acetate/vinyl ester of versatic acid (VAc-Veova), TESPMA, MPTES and TEVS hybrid latexes have been successfully prepared by emulsion polymerization in the presence of WPU dispersion.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancers in female populations. The exact cause is not known, but is most likely to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Log-logistic model (LLM) is applied as a statistical method for predicting survival and it influencing factors. In recent decades, artificial neural network (ANN) models have been increasingly applied to predict survival data. The present research was conducted to compare log-logistic regression and artificial neural network models in prediction of breast cancer (BC) survival. Materials and Methods: A historical cohort study was established with 104 patients suffering from BC from 1997 to 2005. To compare the ANN and LLM in our setting, we used the estimated areas under the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) and integrated AUC (iAUC). The data were analyzed using R statistical software. Results: The AUC for the first, second and third years after diagnosis are 0.918, 0.780 and 0.800 in ANN, and 0.834, 0.733 and 0.616 in LLM, respectively. The mean AUC for ANN was statistically higher than that of the LLM (0.845 vs. 0.744). Hence, this study showed a significant difference between the performance in terms of prediction by ANN and LLM. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the ability of prediction with ANN was higher than with the LLM model. Thus, the use of ANN method for prediction of survival in field of breast cancer is suggested.
