        A Nine-Level Switched-Capacitor Step-Up Inverter with Low Voltage Stress

        This paper proposes a nine-level switched-capacitor step-up inverter (9LSUI) which can achieve a quadruple voltage gain with single dc source. Differing from other switched-capacitor inverters, the voltage stress of switches is effectively reduced due to the elimination of H-bridge, and the peak inverse voltage of all switches is kept within 2Vdc. In addition, the proposed inverter is able to integrate inductive load, and the capacitor voltage self-balancing can be achieved without any auxiliary circuits. Moreover, the topology structure can be flexibly extended to raise the output levels, and the peak inverse voltage of switches can remain constant with the increase of sub-modules in the extended structure. Comprehensive comparisons are performed to verify the outstanding advantages of the proposed inverter. Finally, the steady-state and dynamic performance of the proposed inverter is validated through an experimental prototype, and the experimental results are provided to prove the theoretical analysis.

        Portable Amperometric Glucose Detection based on NiS/CuS Nanorods Integrated with a Smartphone Device

        Glucose detection is particularly important for clinical diagnosis and personal prevention and control. Herein, the smartphone-based amperometric glucose sensors were constructed using the NiS/CuS nanorods (NRs) as sensing electrodes. The NiS/CuS NRs were prepared through a facile hydrothermal process accompanied by the subsequent vulcanization treatment. The morphological and structural properties of NiS/CuS NRs were characterized with SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS. Electrochemical measurements including cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy display that NiS/CuS NRs can act as highly efficient electrocatalyst for glucose detection. The NiS/CuS NRs electrodes present a wide detection range of 1-8000 µM for glucose sensing with the sensitivity of 956.38 µA·mM<sup>-1</sup>·cm<sup>-2</sup>. The detection limit was 0.35 µM (S/N=3). When employed in smartphone-based glucose sensing device, they also display a high sensitivity of 738.09 µA·mM<sup>-1</sup>·cm<sup>-2</sup> and low detection limit of 1.67 µM. Moreover, the smartphone-based glucose sensing device also presents favorable feasibility in determination of glucose in serum samples with the recoveries ranging between 99.5 and 105.8%. The results may provide a promising viewpoint to design other new portable glucose sensors.

        Pyrolysis of wood species based on the compositional analysis

        Based on the Van Soest method, the components in Chinese fir and fast-growing poplar were quantified, and the fiber present was separated into three fractions: neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and strong acid detergent fiber. Microstructure of the fibers was investigated by a Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Cellulose and hemicellulose both represent the characteristics of polysaccharides, while lignin has dissimilar structure. Pyrolysis of fir, poplar and the detergent fibers was carried out on a thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with FTIR spectrometry. After the removal of extractives and soluble minerals, pyrolysis of NDF shows the haracteristics of the three main components. Hydrocarbons, aldehydes, ketones, acids, alcohols and others are generated due to the primary pyrolysis of hemicellulose and cellulose in single stages. Phenols and alcohols are the dominant volatiles released from pyrolysis of lignin in two successive stages, respectively.

        Aligned nanofibrous collagen membranes from fish swim bladder as a tough and acid-resistant suture for pH-regulated stomach perforation and tendon rupture

        Background: Wound closure in the complex body environment places higher requirements on suture’s mechanical and biological performance. In the scenario of frequent mechanical gastric motility and extremely low pH, single functional sutures have limitations in dealing with stomach bleeding trauma where the normal healing will get deteriorated in acid. It necessitates to advance suture, which can regulate wounds, resist acid and intelligently sense stomach pH. Methods: Based on fish swim bladder, a double-stranded drug-loaded suture was fabricated. Its cytotoxicity, histocompatibility, mechanical properties, acid resistance and multiple functions were verified. Also, suture’s performance suturing gastric wounds and Achilles tendon was verified in an in vivo model. Results: By investigating the swim bladder’s multi-scale structure, the aligned tough collagen fibrous membrane can resist high hydrostatic pressure. We report that the multi-functional sutures on the twisted and aligned collagen fibers have acid resistance and low tissue reaction. Working with an implantable “capsule robot”, the smart suture can inhibit gastric acid secretion, curb the prolonged stomach bleeding and monitor real-time pH changes in rabbits and pigs. The suture can promote stomach healing and is strong enough to stitch the fractured Achilles tendon. Conclusions: As a drug-loaded absorbable suture, the suture shows excellent performance and good application prospect in clinical work.

        Blistering of potassium-tantalate single crystals induced by helium implantation

        Potassium-tantalate crystals were implanted with helium ions at 190 keV and then thermally treated at different temperatures to study their blistering. The surface blistering, hydrogen depth distribution, and lattice damage induced by He+ implantation were characterized using secondary ion mass spectroscopy, optical and transmission electron microscopy, and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. The blistering of potassium-tantalate crystals was achieved at certain ion fluences followed by thermal treatment.
