The complete open reading frame (ORF) of o-subunit of the $F_1$ ATP synthase (atPA) in Korean ginseng mitochondria was identified by the sequence similarity with atPA genes in other plant mitochondria. The sequence alignment showed that the common translation initiation codon, ATG, in plant genes was replaced with GTG valid codon in Korean ginseng. The atPA gene from GTG to TGA termination codon was 1524 nucleotides long, and the sequence homology of nucleotides and deduced amino acids revealed high values of 92~97%. A deletion event of 6 nucleotides was observed at the 1468th nucleotide from the GTG in Korean ginseng, in contrast to that at the 1450th in other plants such as pea, common bean, soybean, sugar beet, and radish. An unidentified open reading frame (on7) was observed upstream of atmA ORF. No other ATG as an initiation codon was detected in the region between off and atmA ORF in Korean ginseng, although a pyrimidine cluster "TTTTCTTTT" was located in this region as in Oenothera and maize genes. It could be supposed that GTG codon in atpA gene of Korean ginseng mitochondria would act as an initiation codon as in microbial genes.ial genes.

Two peptaibol antibiotics, peptavirins A and B, which exhibited strong inhibitory effect against Tobacco mosaic vials (TMV) infection, were isolated from steam-cooked rice culture of Apiocrea sp.14T. The peptavirins were identified as new derivatives of chrysospermins, which are 19-mer and have been reported to be produced in a fungal isolate. The physicochemical properties of the peptavirins were mostly identical with chrysospermins A through D except for the UV absorption spectrum. The peptavirins inhibited the growths of the Grampositive bacteria tested, including the plant pathogenic bacterium, Corynebacterium lilium, and the fungus, Aspergillus niger. Peptavirin A was somewhat cytotoxic to cancer cell lines, especially K562 (leukemia) and UACC 62 (melanoma), whereas peptavirin B only exhibited slight cytotoxicity.

In order to characterize the chloroplasts of Korean ginseng as a semi-shade plant and radish as a sun plant, effects of growth light intensity on photosynthetic electron transport (PS) activity in chloroplasts and superoxide (O_2·^-) production in thylakoid membrane by irradiation were investigated. High-light chloroplasts of both plants showed higher PS activities than those grown under low growth light intensity. High PSⅡ and low PSⅠ activities in ginseng chloroplasts (ratio of PSⅡ/PSⅠ:1.1) were observed, but radish chloroplasts showed low PSⅡ and high PSⅠ activities (ratio of PSⅡ/PSⅠ:0.3). PSⅡ activity of both plants was little affected by temperature in ranges of 15-35℃. Activities of whole-chain (PSⅡ+Ⅰ) in ginseng and PSⅠ in radish were increased at high temperature (40℃). Preincubation of chloroplasts at 40℃ during 30 min, as a mild heat stress, caused rapid decrease in PSⅡ and PSⅡ+Ⅰ activities of both plants. However PSⅠ activity was not decreased in ginseng and rather increased in radish. O_2·^- production (NBT reduction) in Mehler reaction in the thylakoid membrane was inhibited by DCMU in both plants. DMBIB inhibited O_2·^- production in ginseng, but radish was insensitive to DMBIB. Electron flow system in ginseng thylakoid membrane was more susceptible to damage of photooxidation than that of radish.
Inhibitory Effects of Acinetobacter sp. KTB3 on Infection of Tobacco mosaic virus in Tobacco Plants

During the screening of antiviral substances having inhibitory effects on Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) infection on tobacco plants, we found a bacterial isolate KTB3, and identified it as Acinetobacter sp. which strongly inhibited the infection of TMV When the culture filtrate from KTB3 was applied on the upper surface of the Xanthi-nc tobacco leaves at the same time, or 24 hours before TMV inoculation, almost complete inhibition was achieved. Likewise, 86% inhibition was achieved, when the culture filtrate was applied on the underside of the leaves. In field trials, transmission of TMV from diseased seedlings to healthy ones during transplanting work was reduced by 92%, when the culture filtrate was sprayed onto the tobacco seedlings, cv. NC82, 24 hours before transplanting. No toxic effect was observed on the tobacco plants. Antiviral substance from the culture filtrate was purified by ethanol precipitation, dialysis, DEAE-cellulose, and Sephadex G75 gel column chromatography. The partially purified active material which showed positive color reaction to sugar and protein inhibited TMV infection by 60% at 1 ${\mu}$g/ml.
