        Spin-Lattice Relaxation in Pyridazine Perchlorate (C4H4N2)HClO4

        We have carried out dierential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in order to investigate the change in the molecular dynamics accompaning by the phase transition at Tc = 343 K. We found that drastic decrease in the line width of the 1H-NMR absorption line was observed at Tc. Moreover, a decrease in the 1H spin-lattice relaxation time that accompanied the phase transition at 343 K was also observed. These results indicate that a re-orientational motion of the (C4H5N2)+ ion appears above Tc. In addition, an anomalously large thermal anomaly (10.6 kJ/mol) was observed at Tc. From these results, we deduced that the phase transition at 343 K was caused by the appearance of a re-orientational motion of the (C4H5N2)+ ion.

        Fabrication and electrical properties of field effect transistor based on ferroelectric insulator and pentacene film

        A field effect transistor (FET) based on the ferroelectric tri-glycine sulfate (TGS) single crystal and pentacene film has been fabricated and the electrical properties have been investigated. It was found that the drain current decreases drastically with the increase of the gate electric field at around 100 V/cm, and shows a minimum at 400 V/cm which corresponds to the coercive electric field of TGS. This decrease of the drain current is caused by the appearance of the depletion layer in the pentacene film. This result indicates that the FET based on the TGS single crystal and pentacene film operates at low gate electric field owing to the rapid generation of the surface charge accompanied by the appearance of the spontaneous polarization in the ferroelectric TGS insulator. It was also found that the drain current does not return to the initial value (before the gate electric field of 450 V/cm is applied) for one week even if the gate electric field is turned from 450 to 0 V/cm. This result indicates that the surface charge of pentacene remains for one week. From these results, it is suggested that the FET based on the TGS single crystal and pentacene film shows the memory effect.

        Electrical properties of fuel cell based on DNA film

        We have investigated the electrical properties of a fuel cell based on DNA lm. It is found that open-circuit voltage appears in theDNA lm, optimum condition exists. From the analyses of the frequency dependence of electrical conductivity, it is also found that elec-trical conductivity consists of the component of electrical conductivity caused by the dielectric dispersion, and the component of DCelectrical conductivity. Furthermore, we have found that the ratio,d, of DC conductivity to the component caused by dielectric disper-sion becomes large in the middle-humidity region between 17% and 60% and reaches a maximum at approximately 57% where open-loss are achieved. From these results, it is deduced that optimum conduction of the fuel cell based on DNA lm is determined bynot only the proton conductivity but also by the dielectric loss accompanied by the dielectric dispersion.

        Whipple disease mimicking inflammatory bowel disease

        Whipple disease is a systemic chronic infection caused by Tropheryma whipplei. Although chronic diarrhea is a common gastrointestinal symptom, diagnosis is often difficult because there are no specific endoscopic findings, and the pathogen is not detectable by stool culture. We present a female patient with Whipple disease who developed chronic bloody diarrhea and growth retardation at the age of 4 years. Colonoscopy showed a mildly edematous terminal ileum and marked erythema without vascular patterns throughout the sigmoid colon and rectum. Subsequently, a primary diagnosis of ulcerative colitis was made. Histopathological analysis of the terminal ileum showed the presence of foamy macrophages filled with periodic acid-Schiff-positive particles. Polymerase chain reaction using DNA from a terminal ileum biopsy sample amplified a fragment of 16S rRNA from T. whipplei. Antibiotic treatment relieved the patient’s symptoms. There was no evidence of immunodeficiency in the present case. Since Whipple disease worsens after anti-tumor necrosis factor inhibitor therapy, considering this infection in the differential diagnosis may be important in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, especially before initiation of immunotherapy.
