<P>The seed-mediated growth strategy of Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) inside carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers is demonstrated to greatly improve their mechanical and electrical properties and provide a function for catalytic applications. The resulting Au NP@CNT nanocomposite fibers exhibit 100% knot efficiency, catalytic activity and considerably enhanced modulus, tensile strength, and electrical conductivity from 7 GPa, 109 MPa and 1300 S cm−1 to 24 GPa, 351 MPa and 3600 S cm−1, respectively. The enhancement mechanism is also revealed by systematic characterization and theoretical simulations.</P>

<P>Photoactive yellow protein (PYP) induces negative phototaxis in <I>Halorhodospira halophila</I> via photoactivation triggered by light-mediated chromophore isomerization. Chromophore isomerization proceeds via a volume-conserving isomerization mechanism due to the hydrogen-bond network and steric constraints inside the protein, and causes significant conformational changes accompanied by N-terminal protrusion. However, it is unclear how the structural change of the chromophore affects the remote N-terminal domain. To understand photocycle-related structural changes, we investigated the structural aspect of chromophore removal in PYP because it possesses a disrupted hydrogen-bond network similar to that in photocycle intermediates. A comparison of the structural aspects with those observed in the photocycle would give a clue related to the structural change mechanism in the photocycle. Chromophore removal effects were assessed via UV-vis spectroscopy, circular dichroism, and X-ray solution scattering. Molecular shape reconstruction and an experiment-restrained rigid-body molecular dynamics simulation based on the scattering data were performed to determine protein shape, size, and conformational changes upon PYP bleaching. Data show that chromophore removal disrupted the holo-PYP structure, resulting in a small N-terminal protrusion, but the extent of conformational changes was markedly less than those in the photocycle. This indicates that disruption of the hydrogen-bond network alone in bleached PYP does not induce the large conformational change observed in the photocycle, which thus must result from the organized structural transition around the chromophore triggered by chromophore photoisomerization along with disruption of the hydrogen-bond network between the chromophore and the PYP core.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

This research deals with an issue of preventive medicine in bioinformatics. We can diagnose liver conditions reasonably well to prevent Liver Cirrhosis by classifying liver disorder patients into fatty liver and high risk groups. The classification proceeds in two steps. Classification rules are first built by clustering five attributes (MCV, ALP, ALT, ASP, and GGT) of blood test dataset provided by the UCI Repository. The clusters can be formed by the K-mean method that analyzes multi dimensional attributes. We analyze the properties of each cluster divided into fatty liver, high risk and normal classes. The classification rules are generated by the analysis. In this paper, we suggest a method to diagnosis and predict liver condition to alcoholic patient according to risk levels using the classification rule from the new results of blood test. The K-mean classifier has been found to be more accurate for the result of blood test and provides the risk of fatty liver to normal liver conditions.
An Integrated Software Testing Framework for FPGA-Based Controllers in Nuclear Power Plants
Kim, Jaeyeob,Kim, Eui-Sub,Yoo, Junbeom,Lee, Young Jun,Choi, Jong-Gyun Korean Nuclear Society 2016 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.48 No.2
Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have received much attention from the nuclear industry as an alternative platform to programmable logic controllers for digital instrumentation and control. The software aspect of FPGA development consists of several steps of synthesis and refinement, and also requires verification activities, such as simulations that are performed individually at each step. This study proposed an integrated software-testing framework for simulating all artifacts of the FPGA software development simultaneously and evaluating whether all artifacts work correctly using common oracle programs. This method also generates a massive number of meaningful simulation scenarios that reflect reactor shutdown logics. The experiment, which was performed on two FPGA software implementations, showed that it can dramatically save both time and costs.
