<P>We propose to use cRFP (common Repository of FBS Proteins) in the MS (mass spectrometry) raw data search of cell secretomes. cRFP is a small supplementary sequence list of highly abundant fetal bovine serum proteins added to the reference database in use. The aim behind using cRFP is to prevent the contaminant FBS proteins from being misidentified as other proteins in the reference database, just as we would use cRAP (common Repository of Adventitious Proteins) to prevent contaminant proteins present either by accident or through unavoidable contacts from being misidentified as other proteins. We expect it to be widely used in experiments where the proteins are obtained from serum-free media after thorough washing of the cells, or from a complex media such as SILAC, or from extracellular vesicles directly.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Stanniocalcin 1 (Stc1) was originally identified as an anti-hypercalcemic hormone produced by the corpuscles of Stannius (CS) associated with the kidney in teleosts. While the stc1 gene is expressed in various tissues in fishes, its role and regulation in extra-CS tissues are unexplored. In the present study, we characterized a cDNA of stc1 in a euryhaline fish, the Japanese flounder (Paralichyhus olivaceus), and examined its expression in peripheral tissues in response to different salinities and Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> ion concentrations. The Japanese flounder stc1 cDNA (1331 bp) encodes a preprohormone of 251 amino acids (aa), with a signal peptide of 17 aa and a pro-sequence peptide of 15 aa followed by the mature protein of 219 aa. The deduced aa sequence of Japanese flounder stc1 showed highest sequence identity (94.0%) with the European flounder Stc1 among fish and mammalian species, but lower identity to zebrafish, pufferfish, and human STC2 (23.1?25.4%). Lowered environmental salinity resulted in a decrease in stc1 mRNA expression in vivo in the gills, kidney, intestine, and CS glands of the Japanese flounder. Furthermore, we found that extracellular Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> increased steady-state stc1 mRNA levels in gill and kidney cells as well as in the CS cells. Our findings suggest that Stc1 synthesis in the ionregulatory tissues is responsive to environmental salinity and Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> level.
Corpus-based Analysis on Gendered Items in Hip-hop and Country Song Lyrics

Song lyrics reflect the society linguistically and ideologically and in turn have a social and linguistic power to influence the society. Thus, lyrics can be used to gain insights into social beliefs, namely gender representations and stereotypes. This study sets out to investigate the representations of male and female in lyrics using a corpus-based approach. Focusing on the lemmas GIRL, WOMAN, BOY, and MAN, it examines what these gender-marked items refer to and the way males and females are portrayed in hip-hop and country music. The results show that the lemmas refer to a number of different things that are not limited to their literal meanings. In fact, some of them may not even be easily found in the definitions provided in the dictionary. Although they frequently refer to adult males and females in the lyrics of both types of music, it was revealed that some uses of the lemmas were unique to a particular music genre. Additionally, stereotypical representations of gender seem to prevail in song lyrics; although some differences can be found across music genres, females are often sexually objectified and are associated with beauty and emotional intemperance whereas males are portrayed as active, aggressive, and confident. This suggests that, as a type of text that reflects social beliefs, lyrics can be useful for raising awareness of the aspects of society, such as prevalent gender stereotypes. Therefore, lyrics may be used as an authentic material that contains rich sociolinguistic information on gender representations for linguistic and cultural lessons.
Hydrodynamic Simulations of the Central Molecular Zone with a Realistic Galactic Potential

<P>We present hydrodynamic simulations of gas clouds inflowing from the disk to a few hundred parsec region of the Milky Way. A gravitational potential is generated to include realistic Galactic structures by using thousands of multipole expansions (MEs) that describe 6.4 million stellar particles of a self-consistent Galaxy simulation. We find that a hybrid ME model, with two different basis sets and a thick-disk correction, accurately reproduces the overall structures of the Milky Way. Through non-axisymmetric Galactic structures of an elongated bar and spiral arms, gas clouds in the disk inflow to the nuclear region and form a central molecular zone-like nuclear ring. We find that the size of the nuclear ring evolves into similar to 240 pc at T similar to 1500 Myr, regardless of the initial size. For most simulation runs, the rate of gas inflow to the nuclear region is equilibrated to similar to 0.02 M-circle dot yr(-1). The nuclear ring is off-centered, relative to the Galactic center, by the lopsided central mass distribution of the Galaxy model, and thus an asymmetric mass distribution of the nuclear ring arises accordingly. The vertical asymmetry of the Galaxy model also causes the nuclear ring to be tilted along the Galactic plane. During the first similar to 100 Myr, the vertical frequency of the gas motion is twice that of the orbital frequency, thus the projected nuclear ring shows a twisted, infinity-like shape.</P>
