        Percutaneous ablation of liver metastases from colorectal cancer: a comparison between the outcomes of ultrasound guidance and CT guidance using propensity score matching

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness and outcomes of percutaneous ablation guided by ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) in colorectal liver oligometastases (CLOM). Methods: This study included patients with CLOM treated with percutaneous ablation from January 2008 to January 2021 in this observational study. Only lesions visualized on both CT and US images were further analyzed according to whether patients’ initial ablation treatments utilized US guidance or CT guidance. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate local tumor progression (LTP)–free survival after propensity score matching (PSM). The LTP-free survival and treatment-related outcomes were compared between these two groups. Results: PSM identified 116 patients from each group, with 269 and 238 lesions in the USguided and CT-guided groups, respectively. US-guided ablation had a shorter average procedure time and lower cost than CT-guided ablation (27.54±12.06 minutes vs. 32.70±13.88 minutes, P=0.003; $2,175.13±618.17 vs. $2,455.49±710.25, P=0.002). For patients >60 years of age, the cumulative LTP rate at 1 year was lower in the US-guided group than in the CT-guided group (17.8% vs. 25.1%, P=0.038). For patients with perivascular liver lesions, the cumulative LTP rate at 1 year was lower in the US-guided group (14.4% vs. 28.2%, P=0.040). Conclusion: For patients whose age is >60 years or who have perivascular liver lesions, USguided ablation is better than CT-guided ablation, with a shorter treatment time and lower costs when both ablation methods are feasible for patients.

        Numerical study of the run-up of a solitary wave after propagation over a saw-tooth-shaped submerged breakwater

        A numerical model is established to investigate the run-up of a solitary wave after propagating over a triangular saw-tooth-shaped submerged breakwater. A rectangular-shaped submerged breakwater is simulated for comparison. Several factors, including the submerged depth, the lagoon length and the beach slope, are selected as independent variables. The free surface motions and velocity fields of the solitary wave interacting with the submerged breakwater are discussed. The results show that the submerged depth and lagoon length play significant roles in reducing the run-up. The influence of the beach slope is not significant. At the same submerged depth, the triangular saw-tooth-shaped submerged breakwater has only a slightly better effect than the rectangular-shaped submerged breakwater on the run-up reduction. However, a calmer reflected wave profile could be obtained with the rougher surface of the saw-tooth-shaped submerged breakwater. The study conclusions are expected to be useful for the conceptual design of saw-tooth-shaped submerged breakwaters.

        High speed intravascular photoacoustic imaging with fast optical parametric oscillator laser at 1.7 <i>μ</i>m

        <P>Intravascular photoacoustic imaging at 1.7 mu m spectral band has shown promising capabilities for lipid-rich vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque detection. In this work, we report a high speed catheter-based integrated intravascular photoacoustic/intravascular ultrasound (IVPA/IVUS) imaging system with a 500 Hz optical parametric oscillator laser at 1725 nm. A lipid-mimicking phantom and atherosclerotic rabbit abdominal aorta were imaged at 1 frame per second, which is two orders of magnitude faster than previously reported in IVPA imaging with the same wavelength. Clear photoacoustic signals by the absorption of lipid rich deposition demonstrated the ability of the system for high speed vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques detection.         Resistance Behaviours of Clamped HFR-LWC Beam Using Membrane Approach

        Beam-like members sustaining the combined action of transverse load and membrane force exhibit a special load response to progressive deflection. A theoretical model is therefore developed to depict the resistance behaviours of clamped reinforced concrete (RC) beams observed in tests. The support-induced membrane effects are simulated by a longitudinal spring and a rotational spring. The load responses to progressive deflection are obtained using the membrane approach, and the prediction accuracies of proposed method are validated by a series of four-point bending tests on hybrid fibre reinforced-lightweight aggregate concrete (HFR-LWC) beam. It is illustrated that the bearing capacities of clamped HFR-LWC beam are significantly enhanced by the membrane effect. Ultimate load of the clamped beam ranges from 64.0 to 184.0 kN, and the larger bearing capacity compared with simply supported beam is obtained. An ultimate load of 1.85 to 5.31 times the yield line value is achieved, and thereby, the ultimate resistance of the clamped beam might be seriously underestimated using yield line approach. A strong support constraint is beneficial for increasing the load-carrying capacity of clamped HFR-LWC beam, although the large longitudinal restraint stiffness would inevitably gives rise to brittle failure. The relative errors between predicted load and measured value are less than 7.23%, indicating that the presented model is a promising tool to estimate the ultimate load of clamped beam-like member.

        Microstructure and Compression Strength of W/HfC Composites Synthesized by Plasma Activated Sintering

        In this work, W/HfC composite materials were synthesized using plasma activated sintering. The influence of the sinteringtemperature and HfC weight fraction on the relative density, microstructure and compression strength were investigated. The results demonstrated that the sintering temperature and the HfC content significantly affected the microstructure of W/HfC composites. Moreover, the grain size of the W/HC composites decreased and the mechanical properties were improvedremarkably due to the addition of HfC. The majority of HfC particles reacted with oxygen impurities to generate HfO2,whichpurified the grain boundaries and refined the grain size of the W matrix. The optimum content of HfC is 2 wt%, at which ahigh compressive strength of 1.98 GPa and a high strain of 34.7% were obtained.

        Dominant genera of cyanobacteria in Lake Taihu and their relationships with environmental factors

        Cyanobacterial blooms in freshwaters have become one of the most widespread of environmental problems and threaten water resources worldwide. Previous studies on cyanobacteria in Lake Taihu often collected samples from one site (like Meiliang Bay or Zhushan Bay) and focused on the variation in patterns or abundance of Microcystis during the blooming season. However, the distribution of cyanobacteria in Lake Taihu shows differing pattern in various seasons. In this study, water samples were collected monthly for one year at five sites in Lake Taihu with different trophic status and a physicochemical analysis and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) were conducted. DGGE fingerprint analysis showed that Microcystis (7/35 bands) and Synechococcus (12/35 bands) were the two most dominant genera present during the study period at all five sites. Cyanobium (3/35 bands) was the third most common genus which has seldom been previously reported in Lake Taihu. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that the cyanobacterial community structure was significantly correlated with NO3 --N, CODMn, and NH4 +-N in the winter and spring, whereas it was correlated with water temperature in the summer and autumn. Limiting the nutrient input (especially of N and C loading) in Lake Taihu would be a key factor in controlling the growth of different genera of cyanobacteria.

        Analysis of the Transcriptome of Polygonatum odoratum (Mill.) Druce Uncovers Putative Genes Involved in Isofavonoid Biosynthesis

        Polygonatum odoratum (Mill.) Druce (P. odoratum) is a traditional Chinese herb. The isofavonoids of P. odoratum are important medicinal bioactive compounds for the treatment of hypoimmunity, rheumatic heart disease, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. This study used RNA sequencing to identify potential genes regulating isofavonoid biosynthesis in P. odoratum. To do this, we generated an overview of metabolic and secondary metabolic pathways, using MAPMAN, and identifed 96 genes encoding seven key enzymes involved in isofavonoid biosynthesis through their KEGG annotation. Alignment of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase or chalcone synthase amino acid sequences revealed well-conserved sequences, spatial structures, and active sites. We also verifed the expression of key genes encoding phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and chalcone synthase by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). This analysis of the isofavonoid biosynthesis pathway and its crucial enzymes in P. odoratum lays the foundation for uncovering the regulatory mechanism of isofavonoid biosynthesis.
