      • An Exploratory Study on Mice Organisers in Singapore-Towards the Implementation of Green Practices at Events

Kuan-Huei LEE,Xiao Tong HOR,Jia Hui LIM,Lynette,Jia Hui LEE Shermine,Si Min YEO 세계문화관광학회 2022 International Journal of Culture and tourism Resea Vol.15 No.1

Green practices have been recognised as a growing requirement in the global Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition (MICE) industry due to increasing demand from key stakeholders, and the significant environmental harm caused by the industry. However, the subject on green practice in the Singapore MICE industry remains as one of the least developed areas of academic research. To address this gap, qualitative research involving semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with eight Singapore MICE organisers. It aimed to explore their views towards green practices, their extent of implementation in the waste and energy classification, as well as the motivation and barriers faced during adoption. This study revealed new findings on the contrast between Multinational Corporations (MNC) and Small & Medium Enterprise (SME) MICE companies’ commitment toward sustainable practices. The low usage of sustainability guidelines available in the market was linked to its inability to withstand the test of time in the evolving MICE industry. The study provides Practices insights for both academics and MICE practitioners given the infancy of green in Singapore coupled with the growing enthusiasm in the global MICE industry. Further research could investigate exploring internal factors affecting the adoption of sustainability practices as well as gathering views of other event stakeholders.

Protection by Chrysanthemum zawadskii extract from liver damage of mice caused by carbon tetrachloride is maybe mediated by modulation of QR activity

        Ji Yeon Seo,Soon Sung Lim,Jia Park,Ji-Sun Lim,Hyo Jung Kim,Hui Jung Kang,Jung Han Yoon Park,Jong-Sang Kim 한국영양학회 2010 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.4 No.2

Our previous study demonstrated that methanolic extract of Chrysanthemum zawadskii Herbich var. latilobum Kitamura (Compositae) has the potential to induce detoxifying enzymes such as NAD(P)H:(quinone acceptor) oxidoreductase 1 (EC 1.6.99.2) (NQO1, QR) and glutathione S-transferase (GST). In this study we further fractionated methanolic extract of Chrysanthemum zawadskii and investigated the detoxifying enzyme-inducing potential of each fraction. The fraction (CZ-6) shown the highest QR-inducing activity was found to contain (+)-(3S,4S,5R,8S)-(E)-8-acetoxy-4-hydroxy-3-isovaleroyloxy-2-(hexa-2,4-diynyliden)-1,6-dioxaspiro [4,5] decane and increased QR enzyme activity in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, CZ-6 fraction caused a dose-dependent enhancement of luciferase activity in HepG2-C8 cells generated by stably transfecting antioxidant response element-luciferase gene construct, suggesting that it induces antioxidant/detoxifying enzymes through antioxidant response element (ARE)-mediated transcriptional activation of the relevant genes. Although CZ-6 fraction failed to induce hepatic QR in mice over the control, it restored QR activity suppressed by CCl₄ treatment to the control level. Hepatic injury induced by CCl₄ was also slightly protected by pretreatment with CZ-6. In conclusion, although CZ-6 fractionated from methanolic extract of Chrysanthemum zawadskii did not cause a significant QR induction in mice organs such as liver, kidney, and stomach, it showed protective effect from liver damage caused by CCl₄.

Application of a Standardized Treatment Paradigm as a Strategy to Achieve Optimal Onco-Functional Balance in Glioma Surgery

( Chin Hong Ngai ),( Colin Teo ),( Jen Yinn Foo ),( Sheng Lim ),( Jia Qian Sophie Koh ),( Hui-minn Chan ),( Ne-hooi Will Loh ),( Kejia Teo ) 대한뇌종양학회·대한신경종양학회·대한소아뇌종양학회 2024 Brain Tumor Research and Treatment Vol.12 No.2

Background Gliomas, characterized by their invasive persistence and tendency to affect critical brain regions, pose a challenge in surgical resection due to the risk of neurological deficits. This study focuses on a personalized approach to achieving an optimal onco-functional balance in glioma resections, emphasizing maximal tumor removal while preserving the quality of life. Methods A retrospective analysis of 57 awake surgical resections of gliomas at the National University Hospital, Singapore, was conducted. The inclusion criteria were based on diagnosis, functional boundaries determined by direct electrical stimulation, preoperative Karnofsky Performance Status score, and absence of multifocal disease on MRI. The treatment approach included comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation, determination of suitability for awake surgery, and standard asleepawake-asleep anesthesia protocol. Tumor resection techniques and postoperative care were systematically followed. Results The study included 53 patients (55.5% male, average age 39 years), predominantly right-handed. Over half reported seizures as their chief complaint. Tumors were mostly low-grade gliomas. Positive mapping of the primary motor cortex was conducted in all cases, with awake surgery completed in 77.2% of cases. New neurological deficits were observed in 26.3% of patients at 1 month after operation; most showed significant improvement at 6 months. Conclusion The standardized treatment paradigm effectively achieved an optimal onco-functional balance in glioma patients. While some patients experienced neurological deficits postoperatively, the majority recovered to their preoperative baseline within 3 months. The approach prioritizes patient empowerment and customized utilization of functional mapping techniques, considering the challenge of preserving diverse languages in a multilingual patient population.
